hmmm, interesting.

is the idea to do the female plugs on air lines and the male plugs for the tool end?

thinking that there's more "abuse" at the tool end with more on and off switching tools and banging around in a bag as opposed to a line being coiled up and hanging on a peg or somewhat protected by the coiled
up line?

Male plugs are for tools and female plugs are for hoses.
Male plugs that are for use with tools that generate vibration such as impacts, chisels, hammers should be made from steel (preferably heat treated for hardness). This is especially important when the coupler uses steel balls for locking as opposed to a latch type coupler.
The Stedlin Orbital Quietplug is aluminum but the orbital joint reduces the vibration transferred to the plug.

I originally was making the QuietPlug male fittings from steel for use in house and for beta testing. I am not currently planning on producing any products from steel as I want my products to be as light as possible.
I decided to manufacture a new type of coupler that among other features, does not require steel plugs for use with high impact air tools.

We were recently contacted by a aircraft manufacturer who heard about us and thought we could help them with a safety issue. We did and they ordered hundreds of our QuietPlugs.
We showed them a pre-release orbital coupler and they were very impressed and would have ordered them also.
There is an excellent chance they will want to buy our entire first run of couplers but we will hold some back until our next run for people such as yourself.

While I was recently doing flow testing of couplers I decided to check several types I have laying around.
I was somewhat shocked to find how restrictive some common couplers are.
For example, I tested several common 1/4 NPT industrial couplers (M style) similar to what comes with portable compressors.
I tested several from different companies and they were all about the same within a few PSI.
The pressure drop at 32 SCFM was over 40 PSI on all of them.
As a comparison, I tested a Milton V style with V style plug at 5 PSI pressure drop.
I also tested several high flow couplers from different companies that are basically all the same design at 9 PSI pressure drop.

For what it's worth.

I also tested the upcoming Stedlin couplers but I can't tell you the results until next week.

Two of our three upcoming couplers are listed on our website by name as "coming soon". Apparently it is possible to order them right now as we already sold some and shipped them.
We are building our inventory right now. We had numerous weather related production delays recently that have put us behind by almost a month.

There is a good change that we will sell out quickly as there is a lot of local interest in these couplers.

All three products will officially be on our website next week along with photos, descriptions, specifications, etc.

question, other then cost is there any reason to not order the hi-flow ends for a home work shop?

probably a stupid question but why sell a product that dose not have max flow?

not being a smarttazz, I just do not see the reasoning behind it.

By hi-flow ends, may I assume you are referring to the European 1/4" high flow standard commonly referred to as Milton V style on this forum?

This is a picture of a Stedlin Quick Coupler with a Stedlin high flow plug inserted. This combination has a pressure drop of 9 PSI at 40 SCFM.

Nice looking coupling, but will it be cost competitive with the common Milton coupling? The Milton A type is running a little under $11.00 for a set of one female and four male pieces, and seems more than adequate for 99.9% of applications, in my opinion.

They aren’t as pretty, though.

We are not interested in competing with couplings made in China on the basis of price.
All our products are and will continue to be designed and manufactured entirely in the US.

By the way, the flow rate of this coupler is virtually identical to that of most 1/4 high flow couplers using the European high flow plugs.
We decided not to support that standard because it doesn't meet our standards.

I might have failed to mention this before but with the Stedlin couplers there is no need to use steel plugs whatsoever. Feel free to connect our couplers to aluminum or brass plugs for use with air hammers/needle scalers, impacts, etc.

* It seems like only a handful of couplers are compatible with both "Milton Type V", and "Milton Type H" plugs (and it seems that none do it well).

So... two and a half questions:

1) Do your couplers accept both your standard and high-flow quietplugs and your standard quietplugs?

2) Do your couplers accept any other manufacturer's "high flow" plug ends, and if so, which ones?

Our couplers have not officially been released yet. Complete specifications will be available in a few days.
Stedlin currently only supports two types of plug standards.
ISO-6150B (industrial 1/4 NPT style) also known as M style.
CEJN-320 (1/4 NPT high flow) also known as V style.

Our soon to be released couplers have a very low internal pressure drop.
The first version to be released is compatible with the 1/4" industrial style plugs such as our QuietPlug.
We will be offering a high flow version very soon.

This video demonstrates the pressure drop of our upcoming Quick Coupler.

I disconnected my 100' 3/8" hose from my compressor today. It has your quiet plugs on it. I didn't have to warn the neighbors, send all furry woodland creatures in a half mile radius running, or cringe in fear of the whipping end. Just Pssssssssssh.

So. Nice.

I understand. All the air hoses in my shops have had QuietPlugs on them for over 2 years.

Speaking of hi-flo couplers, the video I posted earlier shows our Quick Coupler has a pressure drop of less then 10 PSI at 42 CFM. I ran the same test with all my other high flow couplers from other manufacturers and got almost the same result within 1 or 2 PSI.
Our coupler test was however performed with a Stedlin designed high flow plug instead of the European style all the other high flow couplers use. In addition, the force required to connect the plug is significantly less than anything else tested.

Stedlin has no plans to support the European high flow plug standard and this is why.

High flow air couplers and plugs ,hype versus reality:

A lot has been made about the significant improvement in air tool performance using the European 1/4" high flow standard which allows for bores as large as 8 millimeters.
Lately I've noticed that many companies that sell couplers are offering package deals of these couplers with aluminum plugs. The plugs have very large bores especially considering they are made from aluminum.
I consider these high flow plugs dangerous.
I lost all the hearing in my left ear because of this.

Before these types of couplers came on the market, 1/4” NPT threaded air hose couplers seemed to have standardized on a bore size of approximately 5 millimeters.
It is assumed that the main reason these new high flow couplers have so much more flow then the earlier 5 millimeter couplers was caused entirely by the larger plug bore size.
This is most definitely not the case. The biggest improvement comes from the air flow design of the coupler itself.
The original air couplers introduced in the US by Milton Industries used basically the exact same plug that is standardized today as the so called “industrial” or “M style” or more precisely ISO-6150B.
I believe this plug started out with a 3/16 of an inch hole through it and has remained very close to that for over 70 years.
The couplers that tend to be shipped with new portable compressors use the same type of coupler that has been available for about that long with little change. This is the type of coupler that requires the user to pull back the outer sleeve in order to insert the plug. These couplers tend to be restrictive to the flow of compressed air
The new high flow couplers work differently internally and do not require the sleeve to be retracted in order to insert the plug. These couplers also have a much more efficient internal flow path then the original couplers.
As an example:
At a flow rate of 35 SCFM the older style coupler and 5MM plug can have a pressure drop of over 40 PSI.
The exact same plug inserted into a high flow coupler such as a Milton V style can increase the flow rate by up to 250 percent.

The 5 millimeter bore of most of these plugs could actually be 6 millimeter without any adverse effects. Doing this would reduce the pressure drop to the point where it's virtually the same as the large bore plugs.

The problem with these European high flow plugs is in fact the very large bore.
The reason is that increasing the bore beyond 6 millimeters does not increase the system flow rate substantially considering all the other loses in a 1/4” NPT / 3/8” hose based setup.
However, the large bore plug on the end of a hose increases the flow rate substantially of the air exhausting the hose upon plug disconnection because it is the only restriction.
This causes a significant increase in the sound level during disconnection, potentially to hearing damaging levels. In addition the force generated by the out rush of air can be a cause of injury.

In other words: Large bore high flow plugs increase the flow rate greatly but in the wrong direction.

All of our couplers are high flow, they just don't support the CEJN-320 standard. In our case, the flow rate is plug bore dependent. Internally we have plugs of my design that are similiar to the so called M style but capable of bore size of .25". We plan on offering this propritary plug in 3 versions

We are not oficially selling couplers yet. We will be as of next week.
When I speak of "high flow" I am referring the flow rate range, not the plug style.
The CEJN-320 plug standard has been abused recently in my opinion by these new low cost couplers and plugs with aluminum plugs with absurdly large bores, some even over .30 inches. I consider these potentially dangerous, especially when used to connect and disconnect hoses.
I have personal experience with this as disconnecting one of these high flow couplers destroyed the hearing in my left ear.
Our QuietPlug-HF, Orbital QuietPlug-HF and QuietHose fittings eliminate this danger which is why we decided to make them.
Our soon to be released couplers meet my definition of "high flow" because they have a very low pressure drop at very high air flows. Our Standard QuietPlug inserted into our couplers produces a very low pressure drop at high air flows. This is on the order of 15 PSI at 40 CFM.

I am considering offering our proprietary "high flow plugs" at a future date.
They work fine in Couplings such as the Milton V style and equivalent although they are significantly easier to connect to our coupler.

It seems that there are many companies selling the same high flow coupler under their brand with the only difference being material and cosmetics.
I consider this a flawed design. It attempts to accommodate many plug styles and fails. In addition, the o-ring inside these often falls out because it is not properly constrained.

The Prevost Safety couplers are fine products. I like ours better obviously for reasons that will be obvious one I release complete specifications next week.
