My attempt to make a better hose coupler

I could easily make my couplers accept the V style but I would prefer not to because they could be used in an unsafe manner.
Like I said in my "rambling" post, the extra large bore size increases the flow significantly in the wrong direction.

The Stedlin couplers use 8 locking balls that are not steel and will not damage aluminum plugs. This is quite revolutionary.

Which is why I was looking forward to them.

When my father-in-law I combined our shops, we ended up with 3 plug standards (and 1/4 and 3/8 sizes as well) amongst all the carpentry, woodworking, paint and auto shop tools - over 40 tools in total. It took me a while to get it all standardized on the milton v style.

My F-i-L blew his hearing out as 12 year old kid playing with glow-plug model engines and I want to keep all the hearing I have left. I don't have all that God gave me and while I'm better than the average guy according to the audiologist, I can tell the difference from my youth. I get it. It's a benefit to us all that the bad experiences you had with the whoosh-pop of the tool disconnections led you to invent the quietplug stuff. I wish you'd reverse your decision to not market the couplers in the milton V style. As a small business owner myself, I couldn't shut out that part of the market, hoping they'd convert wholesale to my product. I'd rather they buy at least something I make...

Plus I would benefit from them in the v style. And I suspect I'm not the only one...

I agree with the above, I have a lot of money in V Fittings which were a huge increase over standard i/m, I would like to be able to use them still and add yours into the mix.

You guys should try my couplers. You might change your mind.

I received my first order last week. I have to say that initial quality, pacakaging, and impression gives high scores. I couldnt remember why I order the coupler until I put the two together. Very nice job for sure. I installed it on the compressor and nail gun that gets used the most. Looking forward to seeing these in action. I want to outfit my whole tool trailer with these but at around $400 I think I will have to bite off a little at a time.

I do want to try yours, I would like to be able to add them slow over time that is why it would be nice if they would work with V fittings so i could do it 5-10 fittings at a time.

Perhaps. Insertion force is a non-issue for me, all my couplers are push to connect and even at 150 PSI, I can still pop them on and off. And with the quietplugs, they just hiss on down to 0 PSI.

and as i type this, i don't know why i'm pushing the issue. i really don't need the new couplers, i like mine and they work for me just fine. the only place i can really think of using them - since I win't be converting en masse to your new plug style (50+) and couplers (20-ish) - is to get a few to come direct off the compressor and a couple long extensions so when I'm using the 3/4" impact in front of the garage on the backhoe or manlift, I'll have the lowest flow restriction possible. but then I'd need to make a little whip to convert the line off the compressor back to milton-V so all my other fittings and stuff works... <shrug>

I still think you should market the couplers in the V style. and not just because i really like the color orange. you'll sell more product. and save more hearing. win win... But it's your company and you'll decide what you'll sell.

Would I be correct in assuming that had I priced our products 25 percent lower that you guys would not have bought them unless I discounted them an additional 25 percent?:)

:) Probably. Now you know why HF always has everything on "sale".

It must be the thrill of getting a "deal".

I wonder if a retail store would work where they never have a sales, discounts, or coupons of any type. As long as they have decent prices, it might work.

In my endless quest to learn more I ran a series of tests.

The purpose of the test was to measure the pressure drop in an actual system including a 3/8" diameter 25 foot hose with 1/4NPT end fittings on it.
I used a constant CFM of 32 which attempts to duplicate the air consumption of a typical 1/2" impact wrench during use.

The results are as follows:

Conventional M style couplers and plugs:
59 PSI pressure drop

Stedlin Quick Couplers with QuietPlugs:
32 PSI pressure drop

Stedlin with in house prototype high flow plugs:
25 PSI pressure drop

Milton V couplers and plugs
23 PSI pressure drop

Hose alone:
14 PSI pressure drop

I have several of your products and like them all. I bought one new Orbital coupler before the sale at full price to try it out, so no. The sale started the next day, so I added another in case I liked the first one. First one arrived today...sure is pretty. I should get to try it out tomorrow.

Just speaking for myself...price is always a factory for the DIY guy, like myself. Your products were a "nice to have" and not a "need to have." A limited-time sale of 25% (which is substantial in my opinion) was enough to push me over the edge and buy.

I appreciate that.

Around these parts we find our QuetPlugs are in the "must have" category.
After all, I am almost totally deaf because of an associate disconnecting an air hose next to me when I wasn't ready. I insist that all hoses around me have either QuietPlugs or QuietHose fittings on them.

Dam I missed the sale. Are you going to have another?
I'm sorry you missed out on the sale.
We will have more sales in the future unfortunately for us since we do have to feed our families.
Competing with cheap products from China on the basis of innovation, quality and performance isn't easy.

Whats the status on 3/8" fittings?
I have designed a line of 3/8" NPT couplers and fittings but we don't have the capacity to offer them currently. In addition, I want to have a better understanding of the market first.

Here is preliminary look at one of my 3/8" coupler designs compared to our current 1/4" Quick Coupler.
couplercomparison640.png

The 3/8" is the upper one.
It has a full 3/8" flow path.

True story.
A few months ago I was contacted by a buyer looking for an American manufacturer of air couplers.
I wondered why he contacted us since all we sold at that time was our QuietPlugs.
He said he was desperate as he had been unable to find one US company manufacturing couplers in the US and it was a requirement.
He didn’t know that we were in fact manufacturing couplers for our own use and for beta testing.
We got the order even though I refused to make them to their specifications.
These were the first Couplers Stedlin ever sold.:)

I'm hoping these become very well known , and I look forward to being able to say. "I was using these since 2018/19, when they were first introduced"
Hell we all need some bragging rights!

This picture is to illustrate a point.
The brass piece is the piston of a conventional coupler I recently purchased from a well known store.
The air has to flow through 2 narrow little slots and they are really small.
I sometimes think that the people who switched to high flow couplers and rave about the improvement in performance were comparing it to the flow from one of these all too common couplers. No wonder they were impressed.
I think it's shameful that compressors are shipped with this kind of junk coupling on them. The pressure drop of these couplers is beyond bad.

The one thing to keep in mind is this is garage journal... some guys insist they need hi flow couplers when hooked to pancake compressor. I can't say in all my years of wrenching I've ever had an issue of not enough flow. If the 1/2" impact won't take it off move up to the 3/4", if that doesn't move to the 1"....if that doesn't work its time for the blue wrench. No air hose required with that one. Ha!

If a 1/2" impact won't do it and it's because of not enough air flow then going to a 3/4" or 1" isn't going to help.

If your coupler has a piston inside like this then forget the impact, especially if you have one on both ends of the hose.

Got my orbital connector on my air gauge today, no more tangled hose. It's quite satisfying to hold both ends and rotate the orbiting center section. :)

Thanks for the updates and information...going to have to pick up one of those Orbital Couplers soon.

BTW, on your web store, the descriptions for the Quick Coupler Male & Female list a "10 PSI pressure design" rather than "drop."

Thanks for pointing that out. I thought it had been fixed but apparently only in the long description. It's fixed now.

This is one of our local shops that uses our products.

So these are impact approved?

I'm running lead-hoses on my air hammers using your fittings and the shop generic couplers (Milton brass? and no-name steel mixed between various lines). I figured the 18inch lead-hose would protect the aluminum fitting from the blows. I was under the impression that the hammering would cause an aluminum fitting, in a steel coupler, to be worn quickly?

Do you have a specific guide to what the aluminum fittings can/can't be used on when attached to non aluminum couplers? If it was my shop, I'd upgrade everything, but it's not my shop.

YES! They are shock resistant and can be directly connected to impact, air hammers, needle scalers and whatever you like and with aluminum plugs.

You are correct.
The Stedlin coupler uses 8 non metallic balls that act as shock absorbers and bearings in addition to locks.

Aluminum plugs can survive in steel ball lock couplers for a long time except when used via direct connection to impacts, air hammers and scalers.

I should also point out that our Orbital QuietPlug and Orbital QuietPlug-HF have been tested extensively in auto shops connected directly to impact wrenches with great success.

This week I was able to put a QuietHose adaptor and an orbital coupler on my air line, fantastic products. The QuietHose is awesome, I can't believe what a difference it makes in the noise level.

I am interested in the Stedlin high flow fittings when they are available, with these work with the orbital coupler that I currently have? Also do you have an ETA of availability?

Thanks.
The upcoming high flow plugs are compatible with our couplers.
They are scheduled for production in 3 weeks.
There will be 2 versions. One for pressure side of air hose with our QuietPlug feature and another for high air consumption tools that don’t retain air like impact wrenches.

Gotcha. So by "direct connection", could I plug an orbital into my impact gun, and run a standard steel plug? Or even just buy the orbital quiet plug for my impact?

What I'm asking is, does the orbital isolate the aluminum and enough from the impacting force to negate the "direct connection" issue?

Yes it does.

Of course if you are using the Stedlin Coupler you can screw an aluminum plug directly into the impact and plug it directly into the Quick Coupler.:)

I installed and tried out one of my QuietPlugs on Saturday...and found that it wouldn't lock into my brass Dixon push-to-click coupler. Have you run into this?

No. Could you give me the part number of the Dixon coupler?
