My "Barn Shop"

I've spent the last few days trying to finish up the 9 x 21 wood shop. I'm building a workbench/router table. I'm wanting to upgrade a little bit so that's going to cost a little bit. I have a very patient customer but would like to get his job done in the next day or two. Pics to follow.

Thanks! Yeah, it was a great find. So good that I bought about 20 extra just so I'd have them for some of my other building.

So, just a little update. Finally getting close to garage door install time. I didn't want to try to install them myself so I went into Home Depot with a pocket full of money and bought two 12x8 insulated doors including installation. Total was about $2300 with tax and labor. I could've got doors for about $1700 installed but decided to spend a little extra for insulated with commercial grade hardware. They are scheduled to be installed on the 9th. In the meantime I've been working on my woodshop. I'm almost finished up with my new router table. Expensive but well worth it! I decided to make a two station table with router lifts. I already had one so I bought a second lift to match.

I got a bit done on the top of the router table. I ordered another router lift to match the Rockler that I already had. The router lift is normally $200 each but worth every penny if you use it a lot like I do. Having two is a big plus. Rockler has it on sale now for $179 and free shipping. I still have a lot to do on this workbench but it's coming along.

Looks like you need a router to build a router table. Like most tinkers I know have a router but I only use it on occasion and nowhere near it's full potential. Set up the way you are the sky's the limit.

As much as I use it, it is a must have item in my shop! 2 or 3 is even better.

While I'm waiting for my second router lift to arrive I decided to do some more work on the shop tunes. Gotta have good tunes! I never buy prefab speakers. Instead I just build my own. I didn't want to go with anything too expensive for the shop but still wanted killer sound. I buy a lot of my raw drivers and crossover components from Parts Express. For these cabinets I found an 8" full range driver on a close out sale. I paired that up with a 1" silk dome tweeter and some capacitors to cut the lows freqs out of the tweets. I built the enclosures out of 3/4" MDF. I put a radius on the edges including the port tube. I also used a rabbet bit to flush mount the speakers. After all of the router work I shot a quick coat of flat black paint and then some inexpensive truck bed liner in a rattle can....pretty cheap at H.F. This gave it a nice texture and helps protect the MDF with all of the damp air we have here in the Pacific Northwest.

So, the mounting is temporary. After I insulate and sheetrock it all I'll make a better looking corner mount.

Looks like the drinking fountain is a Halsey Taylor. A place I worked for purchased that company and we made the drinking fountains for a while. Actually our plant made the water coolers when I was there and our sister plant ended up making the drinking fountains.
My father had a Scout when I was very young. Didn't look like yours though!! I like it!!!

We're having major rain in my area with flooding in a lot of areas. No flooding near me but I'm having a drainage issue. I installed a french drain in the front of the shop but it can't keep up with the amount of rain we've been having. I'm getting a ton of water coming into the wood shop (front left corner of the shop by the walk in door). For now I just get out there a few times a day with the shop vac. When the weather breaks I'm going to have to make a new plan.

Great idea! Thanks. I'll definitely keep that in mind when I get around to doing it all over.

I'm happy with the sound quality I have going on in the shop right now. I have a total of 4 speaker cabinets in the main bay and then two smaller satellite speakers in the wood shop. I will eventually wire in two more out back after I build the deck and storage shed.

The wood shop is coming along. It's a bit of a mess at the moment. I did get some of my shop tools moved over. Got the top of the router table finished and mounted the drill press. I still have to build boxes under each router to collect sawdust and still need to finish hooking up the dust collector to the table saw and routers.

The shop build will be on hold for a little while so I can get my Scout finished before spring. I do car audio fabrication and installation on the side and business is always slow this time of year. Don't have enough play money to spend on the shop and the scout. Good thing is I only need about $1200 more in parts and the Scout is done.

I'm glad that I installed so many. I thought that it might be a little overkill when I laid them all out but I'm glad I didn't change anything. The lighting is awesome in the shop. Plus I got them off of CL for $5 bucks each.....I bought 60 of them.....enough to do all three shops plus the attached home garage.

Thanks Jim. I'll be picking up another Scout today. My dad just bought it a few days ago. He's in his early 80's so my son and I will be doing all of the work on it. It will be in my shop for a while. I also have a line on a decent parts rig at $100. Should end up with about $600 worth of parts if his description is accurate. Pics coming soon.

I'm due to post some more pics of the shop build progress. I had to step back from the IH Scout restoration to clean and organize the shop. I build a new bench, installed some old metal cabinets and moved some more of my shop tools over. I'll post up some pics later today.

Also, I picked up a 1949 International Harvester refrigerator yesterday. I've been looking for one of these for a long time. I'll be repairing the dent and painting it IH red soon.
