Hello Fellow GJ'ers as I did a intro a few months back I think, been watching the sight for more than a little while. Sneaking ideas and building my place, thought I would start a thread on my own place to share as I am moving forward. I guess I started my project October 2012, just a project I was not planning on rushing. I really didn’t even know at that time what I wanted/needed to build other than a building. I did know I had a 20x20 (400sqft) wood frame two car garage that I was going to use for my water well house and tractor storage. Trouble was, there was very little space for a tractor and by the time I spent money on getting the 20x20 structurally solid and a slab in it, I was going to spend more on the project than it was worth (it was an older structure already). It just seemed I would be money ahead to buy a new metal building and have more workable space in the long run.

I really had no idea of cost , but had a idea of what the shop had to do on a minimum. Which was keep the water well indoors and a place to store my tractor. I had just bought a new John Deere 5085M (about $55K) and was not going to be happy with it sitting outside.

I ended up buying a 40x50x12 Mueller bolt together, as I was not seeing myself welding that thing together. I took the bolt together for ease of assembly and to be honest, I was not sure I could trust my welds as I only ever welded on the ranch, never for a living or been tested/certified. The building was $13,200.00 and the slab was $8,000.00. It came with Qty 2 12'x12' roll up doors, Qty 1 walk through metal door, Qty 6 3x6 windows and the roof has radiant barrier insulation.

I love the idea of the DIY but it seemed for a slab, this may be a better job left to the pros, at least for the first time, so I could see how it was done. I can tell you from a stand point of never doing a slab before, it was some long days for me and I am happy I left that job to the pros. The rest of the build, I did mostly on my own, so forgive me if I did some of it wrong as we go through it. That is kinda of why we are here now, so we can learn from each other and save money and time and some pains LOL.

I have a idea of building the shop to accommodate two things.

1. being my shop where I can store my tractor when I am not using it, my tools the ones that I have now and the ones to come over the next years. And do some mechanic, light wood work and welding as needed.

2 being a place to hang with the guys while we watch the game, drink some beers/whiskey and smoke a few cigars. I started this one (I call it my personal bar) first, as I was thinking once I start my shop project, it will be an ongoing project for the rest of my life hahahaha and the bar would be a easier project to get finished sooner. Also it would serve as a confidence builder for me to make sure I can do this kind of work.

Now that I have done a quick review for you guys, I present my first question. I hope it is a easy one for you GJ'ers.

I am not sure I want to run the build threads together (building the metal building, building the bar, building the mechanic shop) and I want to add the build threads in my signature so people can click on it as the time goes.

Do you guys think it would be easier to start and run threads for each build thread individually and how do I add the build threads to my signature like you pros do?

Thanks for the help guys and look forward to sharing info over the next years to come.

I am trimming out the bar with some cedar. I tried the ebonizing vinegar trick on it. It did take the new look off some, but it never did turn grey like aged wood like I wanted.

Sorry to hear the staining didn't work out the way you intended. Did you put sufficient steel wool in the vinegar and let it rest for at least 24 hours to dissolve?
Congrats on the new shop btw. Good to see you covered your own misstake not to post any pics in your first post

You can start this thread as the build of the garage and at the bottom of the post you can post links to the other subjects like this:

My wooden drinking and thinking bar build: xxxxxx

My tractor attachment build:xxxx

My latest welding projects: xxxxx

Not sure how to add this info, but glance through some of the other threads/posts and you can see what I mean.

When you start something new you can always add it

I did put in a lot of steel wool (like 4 bundles) and let it sit for 4 days. It was cold weather outside and not a lot of sun, also i cut the vinegar with water 1 to 1 ratio. not sure if the water or the weather had anything to do with it. I am not "unhappy" with the way it turned out, just not sure if I can duplicate it for the rest of the project so it will look consistent on the other 3 walls LOL. looks like I will be doing some testing before I stain the rest.

I will use this thread as the build of the garage and just post the pics of the build and try to look around at the other threads to see how to do the signature links, thanks for the info!!

Did you order colored concrete or apply the red after it cured?

First, my floor is super dirty as I am doing dry wall and mud work right now, but, this was a very cheap way to get the look out of the slab that I wanted. I am all about getting what I want and NOT spending cashola, hence why I do most all my own work. One of the main reasons I love this forum, is that there is a lot of like minded people here in that respect.

The concrete stain is not really a stain at all. It is fertilizer. It is called Cooperas.

It goes on with a mop and leave it puddled in places and then just let it sit for 24hrs. After you pressure wash it and seal it with a simple concrete sealer from HD, this is the look it has.

With the fertilizer and mops, I got just a bit over $10.00 in the project and it covered 2,000sqft. Again, I love to work cheap so I can save my coins for good tools.:rocker:

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and the response guys. I will get some more photos up of the build on this thread and start a new thread for the bar. Once I get done with the bar, I can start a thread for the shop side!

I am super pumped to start the shop side, but wanted the bar done first as once I get it done, there is no reworking or so I hope. The Mechanic/wood/welding shop side may be a project that will last for years to come from what I see in here from a DIYer prospective LOL

The addition of water may have been the problem, I still think it looks great though! I like the stained floor as well, great tip and I never would have thought of that.

I like the floor, I have read about using Copperas before, still up in the air about it. I have to decide soon though and get my floor done this spring.

Thanks for stopping by guys and thanks for the compliments!! Just FYI I moved the "bar" build to a thread of it's own, as I plan on having a few builds and wanted to keep them separate. I place the link below to the bar thread here and has a few more updates in it. I will be keeping that one up for the bar build as I go and hope to see ALL of you in there for the party!!

Thanks for the complements!! I will be able to find out when I get home this trip. I will do another experiment and keep you posted. One of the things I read as a "down" side to this remedy is it has a VERY bad consistency rating. So the next time I do it, I will make sure to mix enough to get ALL 3 other walls done and hope they match the first wall!!

from one fellow south texan to another.....(portland here)...the floors turned out good!

let me know when the bar is open...I will take a Crown on ice!!!

good job!

I am actually from Portland GO GP!! played ball there my whole life growing up!! Moved out to the country as a young adult. My old man, made me buy a place (50 acres) the day I turned 18. I hated him at the time as I was broke as a kido, but little did I know how happy I would be as a adult and own my place at a very young age. Either way, my girlfriend still lives in Portland and I still think that place is great!! Good to know I have a fellow GJer so close!! We may have to trade help some day or at least drink a few beers before it starts to get to HOT!!

Nice work, i look forward to seeing this one completed and setup!

Thanks!! as I posted earlier here, I made a thread just for the bar for your viewing pleasure as I plan on making a few builds and didnt want them all to be mixed together. I hope to see you there!!

Thanks!! hope you stay around as I hope this party is just getting started!!

I like the floor, I have read about using Copperas before, still up in the air about it. I have to decide soon though and get my floor done this spring.

The only thing that I have seen people having trouble with using this is not cleaning the floor after. This method will leave a white chalk on the slab from the chemical reaction after and I had to pressure wash it to get it off and then I sprayed it with vinegar and a pump up sprayer after that to neutralize the chemical reaction. After I was sure, then I sprayed the cement sealant on it for the finished look

Keep up with me on the bar build thread and I will show a finish product once I get it cleaned!!

Thanks for stopping by everybody, love to see visitors!!
