Hello Fellow GJ'ers as I did a intro a few months back I think, been watching the sight for more than a little while. Sneaking ideas and building my place, thought I would start a thread on my own place to share as I am moving forward. I guess I started my project October 2012, just a project I was not planning on rushing. I really didn’t even know at that time what I wanted/needed to build other than a building. I did know I had a 20x20 (400sqft) wood frame two car garage that I was going to use for my water well house and tractor storage. Trouble was, there was very little space for a tractor and by the time I spent money on getting the 20x20 structurally solid and a slab in it, I was going to spend more on the project than it was worth (it was an older structure already). It just seemed I would be money ahead to buy a new metal building and have more workable space in the long run.
I really had no idea of cost , but had a idea of what the shop had to do on a minimum. Which was keep the water well indoors and a place to store my tractor. I had just bought a new John Deere 5085M (about $55K) and was not going to be happy with it sitting outside.
I ended up buying a 40x50x12 Mueller bolt together, as I was not seeing myself welding that thing together. I took the bolt together for ease of assembly and to be honest, I was not sure I could trust my welds as I only ever welded on the ranch, never for a living or been tested/certified. The building was $13,200.00 and the slab was $8,000.00. It came with Qty 2 12'x12' roll up doors, Qty 1 walk through metal door, Qty 6 3x6 windows and the roof has radiant barrier insulation.
I love the idea of the DIY but it seemed for a slab, this may be a better job left to the pros, at least for the first time, so I could see how it was done. I can tell you from a stand point of never doing a slab before, it was some long days for me and I am happy I left that job to the pros. The rest of the build, I did mostly on my own, so forgive me if I did some of it wrong as we go through it. That is kinda of why we are here now, so we can learn from each other and save money and time and some pains LOL.
I have a idea of building the shop to accommodate two things.
1. being my shop where I can store my tractor when I am not using it, my tools the ones that I have now and the ones to come over the next years. And do some mechanic, light wood work and welding as needed.
2 being a place to hang with the guys while we watch the game, drink some beers/whiskey and smoke a few cigars. I started this one (I call it my personal bar) first, as I was thinking once I start my shop project, it will be an ongoing project for the rest of my life hahahaha and the bar would be a easier project to get finished sooner. Also it would serve as a confidence builder for me to make sure I can do this kind of work.
Now that I have done a quick review for you guys, I present my first question. I hope it is a easy one for you GJ'ers.
I am not sure I want to run the build threads together (building the metal building, building the bar, building the mechanic shop) and I want to add the build threads in my signature so people can click on it as the time goes.
Do you guys think it would be easier to start and run threads for each build thread individually and how do I add the build threads to my signature like you pros do?
Thanks for the help guys and look forward to sharing info over the next years to come.
