Saw an ad on CL for a bunch of NIB Snap-On stuff. From the picture, it looked like a Snap-On student starter kit. This is the second seller I've seen in the past month that have the absolute identical tools for sale. FX80, T72, 24 piece deep and shallow 3/8 sockets, 13 piece 1/2 inch shallow sockets, screwdriver set, 10 piece wrench set, etc. What does it mean when you ask the seller if the tools are metric or SAE and the response is "Wha?, I dunno". He tells me to meet him at a gas station at a certain intersection. I have a heck of a time finding it as there are literally three of them with the same cross streets in the same area in my Thomas Guide. Calling him on his cell phone to clarify was hit and miss. He tells me he has an errand to run but he'll meet me there. I finally start heading down the right street, I pass two patrol cars, lights flashing and 3 dudes cooling on the curb. I get to the gas station and sit there waiting in the lot. I try calling every few minutes and the response on his phone is different each time. Sometimes it rings a lot, sometime a little, sometimes the call goes straight to voicemail. After about 20 minutes, I begin to lose hope and figure someone else is already buying the tools and he's going to blow me off. Finally one last call and he picks up. He tells me their car was just impounded. Somehow he intuitively knows that I must know where he is because I must have seen the hubbub when I passed by. Then he says, "Come get me". Now I'm trying to think fast…rough part of town, three dudes, their car impounded, me with cash…what to do. He is about 10-15 blocks away and I say "Sure". I am about a third of the way there (took me a bit to clear the back seats, and turn around and get going in the right direction) and he calls again to see if I am coming. One last chance to back out. I get there and one dude is driving his car up onto to the tow truck. I am relieved that only my guy gets in the car. We go to his place and I check out what he has. All new sealed packages of wrenches and sockets. The ratchets were in a bag with some sparkplug sockets so they suffered a ding or two. He has the original invoice so he is comparing what I'm offering to what he paid and of course he's not happy. For some reason they invoice the 8 piece screwdriver set for $170. I know that the website has them at $134. I make various offers for the sockets, ratchets, wrenches and screwdrivers but he only accepts $140 for the screwdrivers and the FX80. This is my first Dual 80 and it is NICE. And I just picked up a tip from another thread on how to disable the locking flex feature, push the button to the side.

I have had that where the seller thinks he will get what he paid for them.
I had one guy think since he bought his gearwrench from the snap on truck and there for paying that premium he was going to get $150.00 for a 8pc ratchet wrench set.

No doubt... I could possibly handle 1 guy in my car but i would have never even thought about cleaning up the backseat and allowing anyone behind me.

I'm still nervous for you after reading this.....

Me too!, I thought I was an adventurous risk taker! Nope....especially in LA! Ive worked up and down the state of CA. Im more comfortable on the south side of Chicago at 3am than I am during the day in LA! I never know what to expect out there, at least the animals around here are real predictable.

You were damn lucky on that one. That violates every kind of safety rule when doing any business transaction, let alone a Craigslist purchase.

I thought that I chased deals. There is NO WAY that I would go to the effort that you did for just a couple of tools. Instead of getting a "you ****" I think we should give you a YOUR NUTS!!!

Add me to list of people who have finally found someone MORE determined when on the hunt. You've given us all a new ideal to aspire to. You're nuts!!

Seriously though, that was crazy. :shocking:

I`m glad you posted and are OK.We all like two things quality tools & a great price. Let it be a reminder to all of us that sometimes it`s not worth it.

I love tools and all, but I wont even think about driving into a bad part of town (read either: ghetto or Deliverance forest) for any of them. After all, they're just forged chunks of metal, why risk anything?:headscrat

As for all the other insane details of that story, all I can say is :shocking:

I MIGHT have let the guy ride in the bed or in the front seat of my truck with one of my buddies behind him with a pistol, but he would have had to give me a damn good deal or he would have been left on the side of the road.

Dittos!

Once the adrenalin wears off, think about the possibilities of having 2 'people' in the back seat, and one in the passenger seat.

If I'm reading it correctly, it sounds like only one of the three guys actually got in the car with him. I personally would have just went home after getting the call about his car being impounded. Just not worth the risk IMHO.

Guys,

Thank you all for your kind comments and concern. I really appreciate it and feel like part of the family here!

After reading some of your comments I actually feel more tense now than I ever felt during my "adventure".

This was hardly a routine transaction, but I don't think anyone had ill intent. You have to also put yourselves in the shoes of the seller. Sellers have something to be nervous about too. He has thousands of dollars worth of goods, and he is inviting someone into his home just from a phone call. That may be why he proposed the meeting in the gas station. If I had showed up with three guys, he probably never would have come forth and identified himself. I could tell that he was being cautious too.

I saw no indication that he was anything other than a typical seller and just having a bad day. BTW, it wasn't his car impounded it was his friends for suspended license and pulled over for....dark window tinting.

Just another day in L.A.

Yeah no kidding. I'm glad it all worked out but you really should be more careful. That story of yours could have just as easily went bad and instead of it being posted here it is an unfortunate article in the local paper.

At the moment I hate all CL sellers. I'll get over it but currently, I hate 'em. Had a string of "lowball" sellers recently. (FYI "lowball" does not mean "low price." Lowball is the term when they change the deal on you after you've made an investment of time or money.)

Only after I drive across town does the seller decide to be honest about how his stuff is broken and then gives me a dog-and-pony act about how easy it is to fix, "All you gotta do is...you just gotta find a [missing part for out-of-production item]... and find a way to attach it here [requires machine shop]...it would be easy [several days of work if possible at all]..."

WELL IF IT'S SO EASY, WHY DON'T YOU FIX IT?!?

CL stands for Congenital Liars, IMO. Screw em.

Everybody's lookin' for a sucker. But... I'm glad your deal worked out for you!

Now don't do that again. :twak:
