Little bit of a back story. I'm 26 and have owned my own landscaping business for the last 4 years. I moved into this house about 7 years ago and initially started renting it. About two years later I decided to buy it. It's been paid off for the last year and a half. When I purchased the house it came with this little shed that the previous owner built.

To me it was just an eyesore and a place where my junk could pile up and the rats could live. Never really made it to anything more in my mind.

I am a car enthusiast and have been since I was 17. Since that time I have NEVER had anywhere that I could work on my vehicles at. It was either in the dirt or the driveway. Everything from engine swaps to painting vehicles was done right there (No kidding lol).

Got a couple of estimates in the $24.00 per sq ft area (unfinished inside). Which is cheap but no one wanted to give me the storage space I wanted in the attic. Everyone wanted to stick build it. So I decided to get the best carpenter I know and go to town. We're going to be putting attic trusses on it that have a 8 foot wide by 5 foot high opening in the center to allow for storage space. Attic storage in the new build was VERY important because I have none in the house.

I got the urge to build a garage in my back yard about two years ago although I always wanted one. Today starts the first build day of the 24x26.

The car that's going in it......

1989 Mustang Coupe. 383 stroker with a turbo.

First day...... Got a towing company to haul off the old shed. 50.00 and I'm not confident he even made it a mile with that raggedy thing. It had no skids and was not made to be moved. We had to push him to even attempt to load it. :lol_hitti

Had to remove the 6x6 to get it out. Still only 2'' on each side. :)

Some leveling being done with the tractor. The garage portion (26ft) slopes about 12'' in 26 feet. Were not going to worry about back filling and compacting and just pour the slab thicker in those areas.

Not compacting before pouring the slab? Might result in significant slab cracking?

There is a couple of inches of fill dirt on one side. The neighborhood I am in has been established for over 60 years and so has my backyard. You can barely drive a stob in the ground for the forrms because the ground is so compacted. The couple of couple inches of dirt has been compacted on the high side. There will be about 8 inches of concrete. I don't think I will have any issues.

All topsoil and grass has been removed. There will be a footer that is 12 inches wise by 8 inches deep being dug by myself. I will also spay an herbicide (soil sterilizer) then put a moisture barrier using 6 mill plastic.

I'm in in Georgia.

You should still have a footer on the edges? Right? I think you are asking for trouble if you don't , even if you think your ground is tough enough....You must be doing this without pulling permits right.

My brother's got a '00 with a 6.0L LS/ 80mm turbo that I've helped him build.

Gotta say CONGRATS on owning house at such young age & building shop you want !!

Question . . . what is the "flying shed" attached to tree trunks beyond the back fence ?? Is that some sort of treehouse for neighbor??

Thanks! I started this landscaping business about 4 years ago. Started from scratch. All I had was a push mower (Lawnboy 2 cycle) that I bought for 30 bucks and a friends pickup truck along with a blower that belonged to my brother. I had purchased a commercial echo weed eater for 100 bucks used from a buddy.

I still wonder sometimes how it happened.

Today I own several trucks and I run a crew out of a box truck for landscaping maintenance pretty much full time. I'm not the biggest landscaping company in the area by a long shot. But what I do have is a few very good employees and a family that supports me 100%. I owe my current position to my brother Travis (Who is now a First sergeant in the U.S. Air Force) and best friend Jesse (who is now an account manager with Coca Cola). Although they probably did not think they were doing much back then. They did more than they realized.

My position allows me to spend time with my family that I love to death. It also allows me to have extra time to do things for myself. I think that is very important. I'm not the richest person in the town by any means and have had my ups and down financially. I am happy and can say that I truly enjoy life. Which means more to me than any 50+ hour work week and any amount of money that might follow.

To answer your question regarding the ''Floating house'' next door, lol. It was built by my neighbor Nathan. I have known him for probably 7 years now. He is the best carpenter I have ever come across. He is a true carpenter (which is hard to find nowadays) and does beautiful work. He has helped me several times on projects I had going on around my house and also when I was remodeling several rooms. Anything to do with a house this guy has done it and better than most.

Anyway. Nathan is the one that is running the show regarding the garage build. He built that for his kids about 2 years ago. Used Cedar posts, supports and planks that he reclaimed from several different places. It's a bad *** tree house to say the least. His kids love it.

Progress for the day....

Nothing but the footer. Had a couple of my guys come dig it to get them some much needed extra hours during this slow time for us.

That's all for today. Just a couple of hours of work. Will be Wednesday before the concrete guy gets out here. Enough tie for me to do the mostiure barrier and the rebar. Which should only take an hour or so.

Well. Concrete arrived a little early today. The two guys that we contracted out did a great job on it. Below are some pictures of the process.....

20141028_090829_zpssvhzamik.jpg

20141028_091252_zps29zfbkwu.jpg

Slab work done. Wall straps were put in slab. Finally, Control joints were cut instead of tooled in within 5 hours of the concrete placement. This makes for a more desirable appearance in regards to the control joints them selves. There are a COUPLE of imperfections from where the pine needles constantly were falling on the slab when the power finisher was going on. It's basically a groove the size of a pine needle in a couple of different locations on one side of the slab. Overall, the slab is smooth as glass......

If you can't tell I ran everything in 12/2 for main circuits along with 20 amp breakers. It was a small cost increase 20.00 per 250 feet over 14/2 but will be worth it down the line.

Added some additional recessed lighting in the middle. of the truss span. Sinche this are is my attic space I had to go with shallow mount Halo recessed lighting. These were double the price of the normal lights. :(

I only put in 8 of them.

Looks Great....Super Job.

One suggestion on the wall outlets...You are right never have enough, but I would think about putting some mid wall like 40" or so. Much easier to use when working in the shop... for me seems there is always some junk on the floor blocking low outlets..Also good to have outlets above any bench you may want.

Not to mention a lazy *** like me hates having to bend over lol ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. It's something I thought hard about. I'm only planning to have a single metal table in the shop but do plan on putting one or two in about 48 inches high. Hopefully I will not regret it later :)

I had the same thought as davetulk, I'd move want at least half of those plugs up at the 4 foot height or so.
