Continued...

Hey, it's been awhile...

I finally got my last over head cabinet hung.

View media item 51482
I still have to finish the panel for one of the doors, but I can still put stuff in it.

Here's what everything looks like currently.

View media item 51490
I originally intended to put one between the two on the right of the picture, over the workbench, but the garage door track hangers put a crimp in that for the foreseeable future.

I had enough space yesterday, after moving some things around to be able to help my nephew put a new(er) alternator in his 2000 tiberon. Sorry, no pics, to busy getting on with it, and it wasn't that exciting anyway.
The best part for me was just actually have room in the garage and an opportunity to see if the "layout" worked. I have to say tool location seemed to work pretty well for me. Most stuff was only a step or two away. It's only a 20 x 20 anyway, right? Lol

A couple of weeks ago, I built this (also in other threads)

And the biggest piece of news, this also happened on June 1st!

So this happened the other day. "We'd" kinda been planning on it.

View media item 51588
Not quite as cool as some of the vintage units on the garage fridge thread, this is from the 90's. MIL updated her kitchen and it was free. I can dig free.
At first, I had it and the recycling bin switched until my BIL pointed out that the bikes wouldn't have to move if I did the switch. I've already raised the clock from the pic because it looked to low.

Now looking at it a few different times for different length periods, that's a ton of wasted space above the fridge. I can't decide what to do with the space.

I've got some old book shelves I built for an entire different purpose. I'm gonna see if they'll work some way to serve as the pantry my boss wants.
Pictures in a bit.

So i tried the shelves I already had from before to see if they fit.

View media item 51597
Which sucked. And blocked any sight line to the garage from the house.

View media item 51598
So then I thought, how bout verticle, and put some adjustable shelves in there.

View media item 51596
But that turned out to be to tall/high and narrow to be very functional.

But staring and looking and thinking, I tried an idea I had before.

View media item 51592
After I moved it though, I realized that putting it there cuts the viewing angle off and makes the clock difficult to read.

Any ideas or input?

So, a lot has happened since my last update, namely this:

View media item 60129

My wife, being the awesome woman she is managed to do everything right I prepping the house that we(she) managed to get a full, price offer on the house after one showing. We hadn't even officially out the house on the market!!! No living like your walking on eggshells, trying to keep the house clean for multiple showings with two boys for me!!!

We' re moving into this!

As much as I'm excited to have a dedicated bay for the '34 there isn't a ton of "extra" room around the sides. Also the more observant of you already noticed there are only 2-3 cfl bulbs and 1 measly outlet on the wall.
Luckily, my awesome wife has already agreed to a 16' x 24' carriage garge in 2-3 years. (I don't mind waiting)

Thanks for the compliments! Every new beginning starts with some other beginnings end!

Thanks!

I'd like to get better at metal myself!

As for immediate plans, get it cleaned out of all the moving aftermath.
The best part is I get to do the cabinet thing again with the errors and improvements fairly fresh in mind. So far my main plan is to get some overhead cabinets put in over the garage doors like I did in the previous set up. Should be fairly similar in construction. Would like to do better materials this time and I'm not sure about the doors and colors this time.
I'm not sure how much I'm gonna build into this one as I anticipate the important stuff needing to go in the carriage garge eventually. Again we'll see

Can some one explain to me how to get multiple quotations from other guys posts into one reply!? Thanks!

Just hit the "multi quote" button on each post that you want, then the "quote" button in the thread that you want to post it all in.

If you look in the shaded area just below the input field you will see this message...

"You have selected 3 posts that are not part of this thread. Quote these posts as well, or deselect these posts."

(I just quoted from a couple of different threads to make sure it worked).

Gonna try to bring this thing back to life.

So we moved into the house back in late April and spent all summer doing those things one has to do with a new build.
Grading
Irrigation (it's that kinda neighborhood)
Turf
Additional poured concrete patio

Patio furniture
New Furniture
You know, life.
Of course the garage went through several cycles of boxes, loads from the storenlock etc.

View media item 60130
After the dust settled, I built two identical shelf tower things that are actually a modified version of Handy Man garage mag plan and placed them on opposite sides of the garage door, one for toys etc, and one for gardening type stuff.

http://www.familyhandyman.com/garage/storage/diy-toy-storage/view-all

View media item 65955

A few weeks later, I made a 4' x 4' book shelf for my wood working and car magazines

View media item 65858
I forgot to mention, garage mods were waiting on the wall behind the book shelf. If you compare the bookshelf pic of the corner with previous pics of that corner, you'd notice that the "cubby" there is quite smaller now then it was originally. The wall behind it is now a shower stall in what was originally a half, now "full" bathroom.

View media item 60126
View media item 65969
We spent several weeks trying to get that whole thing co-ordinated with the builder/contractors. Standard story with that situation. Waiting on this ordered that blah blah blah.
Any way. Wall built, bookshelf built and installed.

Knowing I wouldn't get a shed, I came up with a long handle tool storage solution I'd been thinking on for awhile. The spot where the garage kicks between the long and short garage doors is a perfect place for it.

Next was improving the lighting from three of these measly fixtures.

View media item 65986

Went to the Depot and ended up with four of these @ 2200 lumens each as well as being dimable. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Hampton-Bay-20-in-Bright-White-LED-Round-Ceiling-Flushmount-54618241/206355230?cm_mmc=Shopping%7CTHD%7CG%7C0%7CG-BASE-PLA-D27L-InteriorLighting%7C&gclid=CKrVirfgg9ECFQYdaQod9pUPYA&gclsrc=aw.ds

View media item 65988
View media item 65987Got brave and decided to install some additional fixtures besides just replacing the existing. Wasn't to tough. Drilled through a joist and fished the wire a couple ten feet and installed an old work box. Wired right up. Not so bad.

View media item 65989
We can do this again, right? Replace a fixture and then run it down the joist and put another box in. Ok, time to fish the wire...

View media item 65990
Nope! The joists switched 90 degrees on the other side of a load baring beam that holds up the bonus room above.
Great!
Cut through drywall and six or seven studs or?
Well, we capped it off with the old work box and we'll figure it out later.
*some of these pics were taken out of chronological order.

At the same time this was happening, I decided it was time to "inherit" my fathers shop tools. He's just recently moved to a nursing home and because he can't walk well if at all, he hasn't been to the basement shop in probably two years. It sounds a little harsh but I would rather get them now than later or have to fight for them in probate or something like that.

The first round involved the quickest picks. Drill press, band saw and round style woodwork bench. My nephew who lives near by has become my partner in crime. He's recently started flipping houses and has also been bit by the woodworking bug.

We decided we needed to build a clamp rack for all of the woodworking clamps we have (and might get in the future!) and I'd been playing around with the idea of a clamp rack that also served as an "air scrubber". Odd, I know, right?
We also had in our possession a big *** squirrel cage fan which was really a large part of what fueled the genesis of this idea. I mean you gotta move a lot of air, right.
My thoughts were like a tower that pulled in air at the bottom and pushed it out the top almost like a chimney.
I let the pictures talk a bit. Side note. There's a new build going on, three houses down and they have a lot of good material going into the dumpster. Half the material in this project was "free"

It's at this point I realize I did a horrible job of photo documenting this project. I think it's because by the time the kids went to sleep and we finally got out to the garage my phone was usually close to dead.

Setting up the fan on the base and building the box that isolates intake from output.
View media item 65950
View media item 65951

We decided that pushing the motor through the top of the isolation box wouldn't cause to much trouble and would help to keep the motor cool with air passing over it.

View media item 65949

Looking down the "chimney" at he top of the isolation box. Air gets pulled into the sides, left and right of picture, through filters and get pushed up the chimney from the top of the pic. The four bolts you see are for the casters, so this thing is mobile.
View media item 65946

First test run. Pulling enough air to hold two "better" filters to the sides of the box with no help. You can also see where I wired a switch as before the fan was always "instant on" when you plugged it in.
View media item 65947
Here we've started attaching clamps holders to the sides and holders to keep the filters in place. They can slide in and out for easy replacement. We left a bar across the intake openings I case this thing pulled so much that it might cave the filters. Still plenty of intake area.
View media item 65944
More clamp holders going on. Leaving some room for pipe clamps.
View media item 65943
I don't know if you can tell by the pics but there's filters on both sides. We haven't done any official tests but so far it seems to do what we want it to without being to loud or creating so much air movement that it chills the room.

SEAN,
at the other house I hung them up with hooks high near the cieling in the "off season". Thinking about it here, but with two boys now, it makes it tougher.
I always felt they looked like deer head trophies sticking out of the wall, like I'd been hunting toddlers and displaying their toys as trophies lol.

Very cool air scrubber Terra. Liking the new setup and where you are headed.

Merry Christmas to you and your family. Hope you get to have some QST over the holiday.

As I mentioned before, I planned on doing the same kind of overhead cabinets as I did at the old house. Again, I did a horrible job of photo documenting this project.

Here's one built. The cabinets are either 48" or 36" wide, 28" tall and 36" deep. There's a open space on the back of the cabinet that's approximately four inches wide. It's the result of trying to maximize the plywood sheet. Making the back from two 12" wide pieces allowed us to get two cabinets from three 4 x 8s

View media item 66119

Here's the junior help. Working on getting face frames installed. You can see what the lighting situation was like with the old fixture here.

View media item 66074
Similar shot with two up over the small garage door. Here's thendifference with the new light fixtures too.
View media item 66077
Going up over the main garage door. Face frame is stained with classic grey. Not quite as grey as we'd like.

All up. Doors to come soon.

Time for some wall cabinets. These took about a week to make/stain/hang. All evenings from usually around 9 to 1am

Now that we have the router table , dadoes and rabbets were much easier.

Throwing some clear poly on the insides to help protect and get the grain to pop.

Face frames are red oak stained classic gray. The longer overhang is actually the top.

The middle cabinet is two inches deeper than the others and will have glass in the doors to show off some tools. We plan to do some trim molding around the top to dress things up a little. We'll see how the door track interferes with that idea.
View media item 66279
We also pulled some nostalgia out of my parents basement. The top piece was mid to late nineties. The Tri-state piece is possibly before my time.

Nova,

Shop is coming along nicely. And those are some cool tools. I assume the bandsaw is a Jet of the same vintage as the tablesaw. I like your idea of the glass frame cabinet. I always wanted to do that but don't really have any cool vintage tools to show off.

Good to see the Hot Rod over there covered up and at home. I am very jealous of your ceiling height. I only got about 9'. Which I guess from a heating and cooling aspect will save me money but sure would like the extra storage are that you are going to have.

The one thing I would hate and love is the wall you have with the windows. Great that you can let in light and a breeze but that is a lot of wall space that is wasted.

So what all tools did you get from Dad?

Thank you.

Yes, the table saw (220), jointer(220), band saw and drill press are all similar vintage of Jet tools, mid to late nineties.

It's nice to have the space, but as you mentioned it's tough to keep warm right now

It's nice that it adds a lot of natural light, but it also adds to the heating dilemma for sure. Also, until we get some shades up, I'm not excited about everybody being able to see all my stuff as they drive by when we're working at night. Luckily most people driving by are heading further into our no outlet neighborhood. Not a lot (technically no) through traffic except for the occasional lookin loos who like to check out the "nice" neighborhood.

Right now it serves as the only place, under the windows, where I can stash a 12' ladder.

I'd like to do something like this, but then I'm at a loss as to what to do with the ladder.

So what all tools did you get from Dad?

The jet stuff as mentioned before, as well as a diefenbach brand roubo style wood working bench. Numerous table saw jigs (cross cut sled, tennoning etc) A router table made from the plans in Shop Notes. Several planes and a bunch of other stuff to numerous to list off. We're in the process of trying to find or build a place for everything.

Nice collection of tools. So I assume you ran some 220 plugs or will be.

I like the shelving that would fit between the windows.

Not sure if you are on pinterest but there are a lot of ideas for ladder storage.

Have fun building the shop. I sometimes enjoy that more than making projects.

What DC are you going to run?
