Well, in case anyone likes to see progress...

It was me...a 34 year old guy with VERY limited building experience; my father-in-law, an experienced contractor; and my Dad, a retired airplane mechanic

Started building a garage this week...well actually started last fall...put the foundation then...hired that out...just didn't have the equipment to do it...also had them run water conduit, gas line, and electrical conduit out...

Last week Sat., layed out and drilled all the sill plates

Sunday...got up 4.5 of 6 walls...

Monday...finished getting all the walls up and started roughing out windows and doors...some troubles with my measure skills led to a few minor set backs...

Tuesday...finished roughing out the windows and doors after freaking out that the concrete guys roughed out a 10' opening for a garage door when I wanted 9'...then realized I put on my plans 10' and figured that was a good call as I have a big truck...

Wednesday...got most of the walls sheeted

Thursday...finished a little more sheeting and final bracing for the walls to get ready for setting trusses...started setting trusses in the late morning...tried to move the girder (sp?) truss and realized we were in trouble...starting setting the trusses on the other side first and had all sorts of problems with them being a little bit longer (28') and what seemed to be heavier then we remember from setting other trusses...went out and rented a sky tracker lift...was working a little better but I have no experience using them...had a friend come over to work it and he was able to put them within what seemed to be a quarter in on the first try...got all of those 28' storage trusses up that night...most of them set in place.

Friday...snow/rain mix...finished setting the storage trusses and called it a day...

Saturday...banged out the 16' scissors trusses without too much problems other than my tape measure reading skills...

Sunday...got everyone cleaned up and on their way. I thought we did pretty okay...I was hoping to get the roof on and shingled put new that was probably being a bit optimistic...However, I'm happy we got as far as we did but am now feeling a bit overwhelmed at what still needs to be done...Trying to finish the garage on top of life...full-time job taking up 40 hours a week, part-time job taking up another ~10 hours/wk, coaching 2 youth soccer teams rules out M and W evenings as well as Sat mornings, coaching 1 flag football team rules out T nights and Sat early afternoons, etc...those aren't complaints...I feel very fortunate...just wishing for more time...

And yes...it's already too small...

You made alot of progress with what little time you have. Get the roof sheeted and shingled and that'll have you set for a while. Then you have all summer to get the rest of the exterior done.

Looking good !

Can't wait for the snow to melt & ground to thaw so I can get cracking on mine again.

Notice you appear to have only single studs supporting either side of your garage door headers...up here code calls for two to give a nice wide seat for the header...but I imagine our snow loads are greater than yours.

Keep up the good work !

Will be adding "trimmers" when I get the floor poured in another month or two...

no super big plans for the place other than to put vehicles in...truck...wife's vehicle, and my Jeep...maybe a hoist at some point for working on the jeep...small workshop type area for whatever needs to be done...

What? No pics of the jeep?

Hope you made the doors tall enough....my CJ 'barely' fits under my header.....I think I have about 2" of space.....

When you pour that floor don't get carried away worring about slop....1" front to back is enough....just enough so the water does drain out.....I almost put too much slope in mine....glad I didn't....makes a big difference when you have something jacked up....don't want stuff rolling around.

Looks good Pat....so when is the party?

My Jeep is tiny yet...should still fit...well...it fit into another garage with 7' doors and these will be 8'...should...until I finish the garage and can get back to work on the jeep...

I've got two floor drains in there and plan to slope the floor to them...will try to not go too steep...dude helping me out with the floor is really good...which is good...cause I am not...

Party is this weekend...a shingles party...come on over and nail some shingles! :)

Go buy a roof nailer, it will worth the money, trust me.

If need be, you can always air down the tires a bit to get it out of the door.

It's been awhile...progress has been low since that first week...but I've always been able to make progress which has kept me happy...anyway...here's where I'm at now...

Got it all sheeted...including securing an eyebrow window...and got some fascia hung as well...planning on getting the fascia all hung...getting some crown held up to draw a line so that I can cut the overhang to the appropriate length, then hang the crown (with help) and then get the drip edge on and then on to the shingles...wish I could have gotten the shingles up quicker...oh well...

Well...on to a few pictures...

Next up...getting a floor done...any suggestions on where to go to get a better idea of concrete jargon like "strike off" and other terms the guy who is running the show will be shouting at me as we pour?

Thanks!!!

I bet that eyebrow window wasn't cheap.

an expensive option for sure...got the window itself from HD...I had a buddy frame it up for me in his garage...then just had to hoist it up on the roof and screw it down...and it had the guys I had lay the shingles scratching their heads a bit...but all in all...not too bad...

seeing as all the other windows in the place cost me $105 (for $105 each...but $105 for 8 of them) I thought I could splurge on the eyebrow window... :)

$105 for eight of them ? Damn son where you buying windows at ?

Helps to have a father-in-law handy man...he had someone not happy with them...i think they are pella windows...client thought they leaked/were drafty...he pulled them and installed new ones for the client...got to keep the windows cheap...windows don't leak...poor install job (not originally installed my my FIL) :)

been a while since an update from me...waiting for it to warm up again to paint...slowly working on the electrical on the mean time...

was able to get garage doors in the day before our first snow fall so I didn't have to shovel out the garage :)

also trying to find someone to carve a 4 leaf clover out of a section of tree stump about 24" wide and 2" thick...going to go between the two windows in picture #75...I do have a plan for the "siding" there...

nice build! Are the pine trees still standing near the garage? I would get them out of there, they snap in the wind pretty easy. I have always heard to NEVER leave a tall pine within falling distance of a building you care about.

Things look like they are going good, the place looks great. Who cut out the scroll work for the siding ? It looks very time consuming.
