My garage, repurposed!

Gee thanks buddy. It seems the majority of the time I go pick up a free item they always have other stuff they're. Trying to get rid of too. Turns out good for me.

I just locked this up for pickup tomorrow. $60.

I've been keeping my eyes out for a decent table and miter saw to replace ones I sold years ago. Almost had a delta miter saw too for 50 but the guy sold it already.

My garage, repurposed!

I never shared a pic of this one. I picked up this Craftsman from GJ member drivesitfar on a trade and a little cash. It's in great shape. A made in Japan model. I loved it though to go in my craftsman red garage.

I need to clean it up and the Littlestown now like I did the Record.

So here it is and my collection now.

Next I'll be on the lookout for an old large Wilton. Hint hint Drivesitfar! [emoji6][emoji106][emoji106]

SD: your vise vice has started and i noticed your last wish. find some more good stuff to trade and i'm sure you will get another chance to grab something in the "little" cabinet.

i noticed the Littlestown is a bit farther in the bench so you wouldn't be able to hold long vertical items that could go to the floor. sometimes its tough to bolt onto cabinets and tool boxes next to the edge so maybe you'll need a couple pieces of steel or aluminum plate. let me know what size piece you need and i'll see if i have one to give you.

you never said what size you need for a bench top on those new cabinets you just painted. did you want to use wood or maybe a 1/8th or thicker piece of steel or aluminum? let me know what size and i'll see if i can find something.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

SD: I remembered Jeremy from Portland has some great pictures on his thread showing how to mount a vise. if you are able to get the bolt pattern figured out to mount vises on cabinets or maybe a plate might help here are a few of his pictures. can you see the metal ruler in the jaws of the vise before he started drilling holes for the vise's feet to mount it. BTW that big Holland's used to be mine, but it never looked that good or never on a bench that nice.

he bought metal cabinets sort of like you have and i mentioned to him to find some barn with some old growth wood which he did and I think he made a helluva bench.

have a great day and forward any leads to cool stuff you find in your searching if too far for you to drive because that handle i have is for a reason.

cheers

The bench top for the Littlestown has an overhang requiring me to mount back a little. However i was not as aware of proper vise mounting procedures when I mounted it either. I may swap it out for one of the others so I'll get it closer.

The bench top measurements are 28 x 56. I'm not sure what I'll do. I like the idea of a piece of 1" nice plywood stained or clear coated with a nice yard stick mounted to the front. But steel would be good too. I may wait for a steel top for a portable roll around bench I'm thinking about making. Then I can use it for welding when I get to that point.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

SD: glad you liked Jeremy's bench and I really like how he stuck a little ruler in the vise's jaws to get it right. i know for a fact he was nervous about drilling holes in that bench top he made.

so here's my proposition. i have an inch or 1.125 thick piece of plywood that is 40 x 93 that i'm using on one of my commercial racks for shelving so if you can find me some clean 2 x 8's or bigger 2 bys i'll swap you and let you have the big piece of plywood. or if you find some cool old tools that i might like that works too for trading fodder. i'll look in my inventory for a nice piece of steel for a top, but doubt i have one that size, but i might.

cheers and keep up the great work

I'll keep my eyes out for some. That would make for a nice thick top. I could always put two 3/4 together. We'll see. Check out my next post to see what I got today.

My garage, repurposed!

So, I went and picked up this saw today for $60. I the guy threw in the homemade mover dolly it was sitting on as well. I'm gonna clean it up the cast top and the sides, replace the power switch and find a replacement slide/guide for it and I'll have a good saw. The blade guards are there too, not pictured.

While I'm there he offers to sell me a black and decker miter saw as well, he'd been using it with a metal blade and it was pretty old and rough so I passed. Then he showed me this:

It's in pretty rough shape. Been painted, and it's missing two screws in the jaws. He got it from a buddy who said it was mounted on the back of a service truck. I'll have some repair to do but I was excited to pick up yet another vise this weekend...unplanned.

He wanted 40 for it, I had 90 cash on me, so I paid 60 for the saw and 30 for the vise.

What a great weekend I've had collecting. Now my garage is an absolute mess. I started moving stuff around this morning before I left. Then the family wanted to drive the hour and 15 min to pick up the saw with me so we hit up *** Root Beer drive in in Issaquah for lunch. If anyone knows where that is its a treat! Littered with trinkets and collectibles on the walls. Coca-cola stuff, license plates, signs, etc. cool place. If you're ever in the northwest looking for a good burger and fries try it out!

I also have a grinder on a stand lined up to pick up Wednesday afternoon for $40.

And am in talks with a guy on a Delta compound miter saw for $75. Then I'll need to stop collecting for a bit and get everything in order.

I did some work on the cabinets this weekend but have a long ways to go. I polished some drawer handles on my bench grinder wire wheel. They cleaned up nicely. Just have around a hundred more to polish! Kept the logos silver too.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

I have the Delta chop saw like that. Got it at a auction. The guy was into woodworking pretty extreme. He had a 16 X 20 just for woodworking. They had all the vacuum lines going to all the saws etc. The Delta vacuum went for about $40.00 with all the pvc lines, I just didn't have anywhere to put it. But now I have my barn built, the skys the limit:beer:

Yeah, I just looked on HD and Amazon and they're going for around 140. Maybe I'll hold out for a better on or a better price.

My garage, repurposed!

I made another big score today! Very excited, picked up this all steel table/work bench after work. And it came with a nice rubber mat that covers the entire table. It is 30" deep X 6' long. Very heavy duty. And the guy has another one! When he's done building a new workbench he's gonna call and let me know. Both for free!!!!!!

Probably not anytime soon but I'd like to clean them up, maybe have them sandblasted and paint them red. These are gonna be great work tables for years to come!

I don't know. Must be the area you live. My theory is FL is retirement state and usually people sell or get rid of thins before they move down to FL.

Yeah, I bet you're right. All I know is I'm soaking up the freebies building my own shop.

Tomorrow I'm picking up a new grinder with stand for $40. I want to have one set up for grinding and one with buffing and polishing wheels.

I have a table just like that one, ands its the exact same color. I love that table, its metal and heavy duty and just the right height. I also came across a couple of smaller gray metal tables that are about 40' tall and they would work for a vice or just to beat on.

Nice score, You ****!

Wow what great stuff your finding. I'm going to have to start following you around.
Seems around here the great industrial stuff is about mined out. Also the flea market people got a clue on stuff like Wilton Vises and Craftsman block grinders. Even if you find one the prices are sky high. The flea people also know the term Snap On real well.
You are doing very well!

Best Regards

Thanks Herb! I have been very lucky to find all the freebies I have. I am amazed every time. My wife can't believe some of the stuff I've gotten. I always keep my eye out for things we could use anywhere not just in the garage. I've been collecting stuff for her as well to build a craft room in our next house so she can do fun projects with the kids. She's excited as I am!

My garage, repurposed!

Here's the grinder I brought home yesterday. The guy was asking 60 and I offered 40 and he accepted. I wanted it for the stand alone. This thing is HEAVY! Has nice rubber adjustable feet on the bottom and could also support a vise. The grinder works fine but is missing the left guard and the mounts for the lights. At 1 HP it screams, it runs smooth just needs some TLC.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

SD: it looks like that grinder and stand might have spent some of its life outside so you might want to check out the internals before using it much. also you probably already know this, but an open wire wheel especially on a 1 HP grinder will spit out a lot of wires if you are using it so wear proper safety gear for your face and thick clothing. you should also stand to the side some because I've had to pull wires out through the back side of my sweatshirts because they went almost all the way through.

or do your wire wheeling with just a tea shirt and a pair of safety goggles on and pull the wires out of your cheeks, chin, arms and chest and just say it was an acupuncture treatment. :D

your new steel tables are a fairly common design and they work well if you have the space. just know that if you do find an 80 pound plus vise to put on it that you'll need to either bolt the table to the wall or floor if you want to mount that vise on it. i haven't looked in the free section for a while, but you are right at some of the amazing things that some people and i have put on it. i was asking $50 for a working piano that needed to come out of my daughter's room a few years ago and it didn't sell in a month so put it in the free section and had maybe 50 buyers and a couple showed up with a friend to move it in an hour. problem solved and everyone was smiling.

Thanks Drives. I was thinking about finding the parts to fix the grinder. We'll see. Or putting polishing buffing wheels on it. I have another grinder with a grinding wheel and wire brush also. Definitely would bolt that table down if I was going to be torquing on it using the vise. I am probably going to just wait to do a lot of permanent mounting since we'll be moving in the next 6 months to a year. Time will tell.

I see free pianos all the time. My wife wants to get one to teach our girls how to play but I suggested we wait until after the move.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

I would just replace the wire wheel with one or two buffing wheels (I like to double up for a flatter buffing surface). If you are buffing aluminum, wear a face mask or if you just wear safety glasses, make sure you wash up before you go in the house. Aside from frightening your girls, you might be mistaken for an intruder....

My garage, repurposed!

Wanted to post some updates. My wife brought home this old back and decker sander/polisher she got for a dollar.
daebfbc0f45b7822833bba392878ce97.jpg
I got the bigger craftsman all taken apart, started working on it but haven't done much more. Need to pick up a couple other wire wheels.

7542981d646acb15fdb73ad7093aa716.jpg
I made some progress cleaning it with degreaser and wire wheel. But like I said. Haven't done much else to it.
e436aea7af492077a0238a0967646cd4.jpg

I also picked up this trailer last weekend to start restoring. Completely 100% free. Came with an extra tire and rim also. Clear title, just need to go transfer it still.

Planning on stripping it down and doing all new lights and painting it red. Go through all the components, wheel bearings, etc. It will fit inside the garage nicely. I also have another 6 x 10 trailer but it is so big and bulky. I actually picked this one up and brought it home completely inside that one.

I also picked up this literature rack free on CL near my work one day last week. Figured it would work good in the garage to hold sandpaper or whatever.

On another note, been playing with my childhood Legos with my kids. I brought them in the house and they were blown away I had so many. My wife had some of hers from her childhood also. So now we have a huge tote full in their playroom. I managed to build a tire service station, a truck with a dump trailer and a gooseneck trailer carrying some engines. [emoji1]

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Wanted to post some updates. My wife brought home this old back and decker sander/polisher she got for a dollar.

I got the bigger craftsman all taken apart, started working on it but haven't done much more. Need to pick up a couple other wire wheels.

I made some progress cleaning it with degreaser and wire wheel. But like I said. Haven't done much else to it.

[emoji1]

That's pretty cool that your wife brought that polisher home. My wife just laughs when I go flea market or tag sales. Nevermind buying and bringing home an old tool. That's great!

That's an awesome free trailer. The compact size is really handy. I need to find one like that.

Yeah, she has a collector mentality too so I'm lucky with that. She loves going garage sale'ing with me, flea markets, swap meets and my whole family usually goes with me on long CL pickups. We make a road trip out of things. Go out to lunch or I try and take them to places they haven't seen before.

My garage, repurposed!

Well, it's been nearly a year since I posted on here. I still cruise GJ daily and keep up on other peoples threads.

A LOT has changed in the past year; job, housing, time to spend in garage and collecting stuff, etc. We put everything into storage. Moved into an apartment temporarily to buy a house in Maple Valley, WA. That all changed, I accepted a new job with my company covering Phoenix and Las Vegas and we just signed on a house in Arizona. We close the beginning of April and move down middle of the month. I can not wait to have a garage again! And get it all set up! I'll probably end up getting rid of some stuff because it's a traditional smaller two car in an Arizona sub division but I need to downsize on some junk anyway! A few pics of the new house.

Google earth pic before it was painted the color it is above. You can see a third driveway backing up to an RV gate with a concrete slab to park my utility trailer and possibly put a shed.

I'm debating on continuing this thread or starting a new one for the new garage when I get there to capture the transformation of the new place. What do you guys think?

Congrats on the new home and new job. That house looks absolutely great and with extra parking and beautiful back yard. My thought would be to start a new thread with a link on this one so your followers can find you new garage. Best of luck with new job, house and of course the garage. [emoji482]

Re: My garage, repurposed!

SD: congrats on the move and i saw a few of the house pictures before i started reading your thread and thought to myself that doesn't look like Maple Valley.

speaking of the move did you need to sell a few of those metal cabinets and stuff that you might not want to move to Arizona? if you want to email or PM me with a list and pictures i can rent a UHaul maybe and stop by. i probably don't need anything if you have another source to sell it to and just saying i might be interested because you've always had a good EYE for cool stuff.

sound like the move is good for you and the family too? i'd love a private swimming pool, but i doubt i'll ever have one because my wife owned one and didn't like the upkeep.

take care and i vote for the new thread since you've had this one on the shelf for about a year now.

ARIZONA DOUBLE or something to that effect for a new name?

good luck

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Thanks to both of you! I'll start a new thread once I get there and I'll think on that name Drives, it is catchy.

I just haven't decided what I want to sell yet, if anything. If I do I'll let you know.

We lived in AZ in 2012 with a pool and it's pretty reasonable to have someone come weekly and clean the pool and do chemicals. We loved it for exercise and the kids love it too. We both agreed that we didn't want to live in AZ unless we had our own pool. The job is going to be so much better for me and my family. It's a field position, working from home. Better hours and work/life balance. I was getting burned out fast in the ops position I was in and had to make a change. Excited to say the least!

Re: My garage, repurposed!

good luck on all the new changes, change is good, change is hard. Going from Washington to the hot desert, is a big change on weather alone. With all the sunshine you will probably be happier just more days outside.
I vote to keep this post, cause I like to see where you start and all the stuff you acquired from everywhere. It also motivates me to drag more stuff home. This way all your journal life is in one place, but you could start new and keep a spot on the bottom of the page for reference to this post.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

SD: you know BUG has a good point. I think you can just start posting the move and the new garage here where some of us already know where to find you. even if it has been a year we are still subscribed and recognize your garage thread.

maybe just post more on GJ and don't stay a stranger even if you end up buying NEW stuff that works better in your new garage. since i'm guessing your old garage was about the same size you can design the features you liked about the old one and make those changes you want adding to those that worked for you.

anyway congrats on the move and sounds like you already are aware and able to handle 120 degree days in summer. Just an FYI I went down for my daughter's graduation at ASU in December and it was actually warmer here this week, but that was a bad weather week and not one of those 70 degree days in the middle of winter like are usually common down there.

GOOD LUCK and sounds like a great move for you and your growing family.
