My garage, repurposed!

Herb: thanks for your reply. I've stayed in touch with your's and a few other's threads very regularly. Absolutely love your space.

Drives and Bug: I think I'm liking the idea of keeping this one going too. After all, I'll never stop collecting and finding treasures to bring home the title still stands true to repurposing.

I claimed this gem today off CL for $10 and the lady selling gave me two moving blankets as well for free! It'll be needed for the move!

After a long day of thinking about all I've got in storage, I really don't want to get rid of any of it. I discussed with my wife how I would be setting up the garage and she really supports whatever I want because she knows how much I love the garage space and collecting. She just requested we at least be able to get one car in the garage. We plan on buying a new family SUV a couple months after arriving down there and i'd love to preserve it from rotting in the sun. I plan to get or build a shed to store yard stuff and gas powered things like pressure washer, mower, weed trimmer, bikes etc. That will free up a lot of space inside the garage. I also requested my wife downsize some old holiday stuff and we store it in the room we'll be using for a home office, I'll put shelving in the closet to hold totes for her. That will free up some space as well. It will all work out in the end.

Sadly I also want to vent a little. We put our family dog of 10 years down yesterday. He was my boy and closest to me. He was sick with intestinal issues most likely cancer causing him to lose control of his bowels and losing massive weight. The vets said we could treat it but at ten years old we elected to lay him down. He was becoming aggressive and irritated at our other dog and our 4 and 6 year old girls so it just made the best sense. I know some may judge and argue we should've kept him around longer but we gave him a damn good life. It was such a hard decision to make though and he will be missed tremendously.

SD: first off I sympathize with the loss of your Furry friend. it's almost harder than losing a close friend or relative. you can't let us or others tell you what is right or wrong in your situation because it's between you, your family and your Vet to make the best decision. sadly our furry friends don't live nearly long enough so try to remember the good times and we support your decision.

I have a small 2 car garage and I used to take up everything with a gym and storage, but my wife was hating having to go out in the rain so I moved my gym inside the house in my son's old bedroom and I'm turning my side of the garage into a shop that is only a 9 x 15. here's a picture of the progress and as you know I have quite a few things. her side has a wall of storage for her stuff and at the back of her garage she let me keep my old wood workbench.

anyway I know you have some cool stuff and some are maybe close to the same as what I own so here's a picture of how i'm setting up my 9 x 15 and my wife can park her Honda CRV in her side.

cheers and hope you had a great weekend

Sorry into hear about your dog. Had dogs all my life and now I've had my own for past 14 plus years I know there will come a day when I'll have to make that decision also. I heard that when its time it's time and they will let you know. It's really a quality of life at that point.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

I'm sorry for the sad day from the loss of the family member. Myself, I have a lot of health problems and feel like **** most of the day, so I can relate with how he probably felt. I would say as hard as it was to do, he is much better!
I know it sounds like crazy talk, but I would bet a few people that have chronic pain would like to have the same option.
I have a hard time of getting rid of stuff, and most of the time I have regrets after I got rid of it. I think every old car I've owned I still wish today that I still had them. I guess that's the hoarder in me.:dunno:
You will have to start buying sun tan lotion, and get rid of the umbrellas.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Well... It's time for a much needed update! We are all moved in as of almost a month ago. House is wonderful. We are absolutely in love with it. Garage is bigger than expected, on the original house plans(which the previous owner left) it actually states it's the "oversize garage" option. I measured and its 20' wide wall to wall and 25' deep so I am as happy as can be about that! It's fully finished, has a ceiling fan in it and lots of pre built particle board cabinets(not sure if I'll keep those in the long run) that are working for now to store stuff. I'll post some pics, currently we are getting the wife's explorer in, and I eventually want to get organized enough to get two cars in.

I've already sold some extra stuff I don't need and am working on condensing and organizing to be more efficient. I'll eventually get a small fence height shed to store all lawn tools and power equipment to get it out of the garage. Of course the inside of the house has been priority and I've been working as much as possible manicuring the yard, palm trees, sprinkler system, pool, adding outdoor decor, etc as this house has a ton of yard to keep looking nice! We are ecstatic about the resort style back yard. Kids love it, they'd swim all day if we'd let them.

With the new job I'm in training and have been traveling off and on, been to Cleveland and LA, am currently in Detroit and head to Las Vegas next week. Minneapolis in four weeks and then travel should calm down and be pretty much done. I hope to get a lot done as time allows, of course we're going into summer in AZ so fall may bring more garage work.

Thanks all for following along and I promise to start posting more now that we are settled in. I'm stoked to have a garage of my own again, that I own and can do whatever I want! I've already set up the work bench, mounted an extension cord reel and my wall mount shock vac. Next is the air hose reel and simple organization. Not many pics of the garage yet. I'll take some more current ones this weekend!

Re: My garage, repurposed!

SD, congratulations on the move. The place looks great and the pool has to be the kids' dream come true. If this is your first pool, you might want to have a pool service take care of it while you are traveling and running around getting stuff done on the house and garage. Once things settle down you can probably manage it yourself.

I've been taking care of ours for more than 40 years (except when we lived overseas) and once you get the water stable, it's piece of cake to take care of. You already have the pool sweeper and chlorine dispenser so a big part of the battle is won.

I put three 3-inch tablets in the dispenser and it lasts three to five weeks (depending on water temp.). Of course that's with no one using the pool and having a screen enclosure. With yours open to the Arizona sun you'll use quite a bit more chlorine but if you keep an eye on it you'll figure out the frequency and amount. Also watch your filter pressure because that tells you when it needs to be cleaned. Unless you are having high winds and dust storms, the filter shouldn't need cleaning more than once every two to three months.

Thanks for the insight! I got advice from the previous owner. And also had a company that was referred to us come out and show me the ins and outs of the pool. He said we have one of the easiest pools to take care of. He said it's about 14,000 gallons and advised 3 tabs a week, four as it gets hotter. Shock if we have a big storm or a lot of people swimming. It has not changed in the month we've been there. Chemicals continue to test fine, I add 3 tabs of 6 in 1 chlorine once a week. I was worried two weeks ago and kept second guessing myself, reading all kinds of info online. I was using cheap test strips. That's when I called the company to come check it out, he tested the water and it was perfect. He advised to throw the cheap strips away and get a good quality Taylor tester. So that's what I did.

This past Saturday I took apart the entire filter and cleaned all four cartridges. They came out great! Previous owner of 11 years who owns a pool service company said clean them every April and October and that it's a super low maintenance pool. So far I'm believing him!

I would have to say yes, a little bit. I really want to scale back on collecting and acquiring anything that I don't need for a while. I want this space to be more practical, cleaner and organized. I would like to do some kind of flooring some day( racedeck or epoxy). Some day possibly take out the particle board cheaply built cabinets and install something different. Not sure where it will take me. I want to be able to work on my own cars, work on projects, with the kids etc. I don't want to gather so much but rather acquire or purchase something only if I really need it. I am proud of what I put together with all the freebies I've gotten over the past couple years but clutter was starting to stress me out and I like the look of a simpler cleaner space. Not a space so clean like some that I don't want to get it dirty, but not so cluttered and unorganized I don't enjoy working out there. I want to display my license plates, hang beer memorabilia, mount a TV, have a computer, have a large selection of hardware and misc parts, a good selection of necessary tools to maintain cars and a home and so on. And keep it tidy. Hope that answered your question. I have a large concrete pad to the left of the garage thru a gate where my utility trailer parks and that's where I'll put a shed for all the outdoor tools.

Your space is rockin and looking good!!!! Loving the craftsman wall and how it's always evolving!

Welcome back to Arizona! I am in East Mesa. What side are you guys on? Garage will be a challenge. A shed is almost a must.

Perfect! I'm a cartridge filter fan as well. I think your cartridges will last a long time but if you notice the pressure going back up soon after a cleaning, it's time to replace the cartridges. If you aren't sure, just replace one and see if things improve. A pool is a wonderful luxury when it's easy to maintain.

You not only answered my question I echo a lot of the sediments you have any direction your garage is going in. I feel like I've been there done that ready to downsize slightly and just have a nice clean set up with a lot less clutter.

Thanks Drives. We're enjoying it and definitely nice to get a ton of work done in the garage or outside and go jump in the pool!

How are things with you? Your house is looking great and I am enjoying your organization thread and will eventually participate!

It's time for an update... I've got the garage re arranged and organized enough I can fit both cars in! I've started getting all my tools put back in their right places and going though stuff and unpacking more and more.

I haven't taken any good pics of its layout yet. I'll get some maybe this weekend. It's just too hot to play out there right now. 108 today and 113 coming tomorrow. It's so nice having cars in there when you go to leave. They cool off much faster!

Some more updates of the new place. Luckily the garage is 25' deep so I ran my cabinets and a shelving unit across the front of the car. This allowed me enough room width wise to get both cars in.

Still lots to do. Organizing and selling some stuff I can part with to make more room.

Thank you. We are loving it here. Not sure why you'd ever wanna live here without a pool though. I'm excited for when it starts cooling down and I can spend more time out there organizing and sorting through things. Not sure how I feel about the built in particle board cabinets at the front of the garage. I think down the road I'd like to take them out and do something different. I'd like to finish the floor as well. But next on the list is lighting. Probably 4 - 6 LED fixtures from Costco.

I used some led spotlights that I bought from lightingever.com, I got the 30W IP66 DW. that's for daylight white. I have 12' sidewalls and I think they work great. Cost me about $23.00 each. Just another option. They are made for outside, so they can be used for that also.

My garage, repurposed!

Found this gem at a yard sale yesterday! Only $25. Works great. Will be nice to have some cold water and a few brews readily available! Found a nice spot for it by the water softener. I'd like to have it on the bench but as most residential garages there are not enough outlets.

Also installed this used faucet we picked up off a local buy sell trade for $50. Nice pull out sprayer. I ordered two soap dispensers to match and a new air gap cover off Amazon as well. I like the clean look and containers of soap dispensers sitting on the counter always drove me nuts.

Nice faucet and great price. I'm with you on the soap dispensers -- I even have one on the sink in the garage. I also added a second soap dispenser but it contains hand sanitizer. My plumbing is a bit different so I was able to install a hot water dispenser in the fourth hole. It's handy for us but dangerous for guests. Sister-in-law tried it out without asking and got scalded. She probably thought it was a reverse osmosis filter outlet.

Oh yes my brother has one and it is scorching hot. I've thought about getting one, not sure how much I'd use it though. Coffee, tea, oatmeal, noodles, what else?

My garage, repurposed!

Got some work done today...

New rear brakes, changed oil and filter and new spark plugs. It feels so nice to have all the tools so handy, air hose reel is convenient and it's so satisfying doing all the work myself.

Also put together the metro racking I've had unassembled for a while to replace the smaller cheap shelf we had from our pantry at our last place. Got all the lawn equipment inside the garage until I get a shed. I've been leaving it on the side of my house but afraid it'll get stolen. Weed eater, leaf blower, lawn mower, pressure washer etc.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

SD: looks like you are getting nicely settled in and ORGANIZED. I bet the 120 degree days is pulling out all the mold you had in your body from living in Washington very quickly. speaking of Washington you might want to go in your GJ profile when you get a minute to change your location.

i'm getting ready to hang that old Borg/Warner cabinet I bought from you a couple of years ago above my steel workbench and i'll start a thread on my little 10x15 garage some day so you can see it. or just PM me with your email and i'll send you a few pictures.

your place looks great and sounds like you are getting the hang of the local CL and garage sales so other than the 100+ degrees at midnight i'd say you are in a GREAT PLACE.

cheers

Thanks Drives. I haven't done a whole lot on CL here. Mostly Facebook swap and shops in our city. Stuffs sells quickly. And there are so many massive neighborhoods there are G sales every weekend. I'm keeping an eye on your new organizing thread. Lots of good stuff in there.

Luckily overnight temps have been in the 80's. We've had some monsoon weather lately but temps haven't been too bad compared to June and July. A couple really good lightening storms are fun to watch.

And caught a couple pics of bees pollinating. Kinda cool watching them up close, they crawl down into a flower come out and go to the next one.
