Re: My garage, repurposed!

Wow, that is an awesome cabinet/drawer unit, can't believe you scored it for free!

I know I can't believe it either. I don't know why people don't try and sell stuff first. The lady that lived in the rental said she got offered money for it in the past but the owner didn't want to part with it. Now she just gave it away to get it out of the way. I'm not going to complain...

LMFAO,........ Dude, your killing me here. Those are nice wall cabinets. Really send those wall cabinets to FL. The creeper is cool wall art. I found old Snap On one. It works but better as wall art since I got 2 others.

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies! I'm excited to get back out there and get organized.

My dad was in the Army but if I remember he was a motorcycle mechanics for a while and later drove around the higher ups in military jeeps and such. He was in during World War 2 but never got deployed overseas. I was told so many stories growing up i cant remember them all. He was such an inspiration and taught me so much about tools, car and home maintenance, etc. He was born in 1917 in Illinois, lived on a working farm, rode a horse to school, and after the Army moved to California and was a carpenter for 25 years before moving to WA where I currently live. Once in WA he owned apple orchards for many years and also an upholstery shop.

Sorry, dont mean to ramble, just a little reminiscing for me!

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk

Awesome story....thanks for sharing!

Sorry to mislead you on the Kennedy. I didn't know Waterloo made one. I've talked to zkling on pm and Kennedy made them plus rebadged them for craftsman. At some point Waterloo jumped in and made them and finding info on anything is proving hard. Can't find anything and dating mine or kennedys. No matter who made it or when its a great deal at $10.

Sorry, coming late to the party - I grew up in Seattle and am a die hard re-purposer . . .can I be your new best friend?

Awesome picks. I am always amazed at the great stuff - cabinets, tables, etc - people are willing to give up when it doesn't suit their immediate needs. I'm a big fan of high quality file cabinets.

You scored on the tool box and the bucket. You're work table with the painted file cabinets looks awesome! Keep at it, building a great workshop is one thing, but doing it with re-purposed free Clist items is a +10.:rocker:

Thanks man that's awesome! I cannot believe the stuff people give away either. I think we have it easy here in seattle getting free stuff! I just hooked up my trailer for tomorrow! Got 3 big metal cabinets to pick up. I got an emergency call to go into work at 5 am tomorrow to work on a truck so I'm also selling a guy something. He's meeting me at my work so I'm killing a couple birds. A after he buys i head to get the cabinets. I've been turning things in cl that i don't want now for a couple months. Using what i want and selling the rest for profit to buy new tools! Here's the cabinets I'm getting tomorrow free. And he has another not pictured that is like 5ft tall with doors all metal.

Ah yeah. It's becoming a business now. I'm up over $500 for about the last month. I've been buying lots at garage sales keeping a few things I want then unloading the rest. It's working nicely. Only problem I have is I'm off the beaten path a little so sometimes people back out of a sale when they see how far they have ti drive! Lol

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Started taking apart the vintage cabinet. Gonna clean it up and paint it. It's dirty...removed all the handles and label holders and emptied the contents. Started taking off the rubber guards. They're rusted and nasty. Greased the monster swivel caster's and called it a night!

That looks like it would be a punch for cutting out small shims or gaskets out of paper, plastic, gasket paper, etc. The tall metal cabinet that you mentioned looks like it used to be PO boxes or safety deposit boxes or something?

P.S. you totally **** on that Kennedy box. I'd love to find a nice little machinist box. Good job with all the scores man, I love this thread!

Thanks! Although I think we figured out its a waterloo. Nevertheless a good score for $10!

I'll have some pics latter of the cabinets I'm going to get right now.

I never shared this last week either, my service manager at work got fired this past Monday and I'm the Lead Tech so I've been filling in with office work. Been a busy week but last Friday I picked up this free 3 year old craftsman lawn mower. Came with a brand new bag but no frame for the bag. So I found it for 37 on sears parts direct. The guy said he couldn't get it to start so he bought a new one. Fired right up for me I cleaned the spark plug and sprayed some carb cleaner and mowed my entire lawn with no bag. Ran like a champ so I got someone coming to buy my used Troy built today for $75!

Re: My garage, repurposed!

I HAVE to get out of this apartment and into a house with a yard and garage.... I am in a field where I am always offered free stuff like cabinets and shelves but I have NO where to put them... Looking through this thread as really got me hyped up to get back into a garage and have my little man cave!!!

Great Job with the work center... I really like it.... The only thing I would have done different is make it taller... More of a stand at desk/bench and add a nice size beer fridge.... GREAT JOB!!!

Yeah I've already thought about adding 6" caster's to it and making it mobile and higher. Wouldn't be hard. I agree though. However I have plans to make another work surface with a grinder, vise and drill press and kinda use that as more of a desk. We'll see, my plans always change! Definitely need to incorporate a beer fridge somewhere though!

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Ok crazy day today. Sold some stuff before I even put it on Craigslist. Made a total of $185 this weekend all off of free stuff.

The cabinets i picked up:

Borg Warner parts cabinet
a6a8ydub.jpg

A guy came to buy something else I had listed on Craigslist and loved the cabinet and offered to buy the bottom half so I kept the top half with the drawers.

Then picked this up free (not running) this afternoon 6 miles from my house. Had it running in less than 5 minutes. An awesome score I'll be keeping! Works awesome!

All in all a great weekend in the garage. Made some good progress on the old cart restoration.

I've officially become a second hand junkie!

Oh yeah I also picked up a new A-frame jack with wheel for my utility trailer at Harbor freight with a 25% off coupon and got the free rope! [emoji2]

I stopped on my way home and picked all this up from a guy for $40. Got some cool stuff out of it. Tons of drill bits in cool benchtop stands. Two cool hand tool boxes. And a sweet socket set!

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Good deal, I guessing that last tool could be a spark plug tool.

Exactly right. That last item is a spark plug gapping tool. The individual "L" shaped tools are to measure different size gaps between electrodes and the flat tool on one end with small slots is to grab the ground terminal of the plug and bend it slightly as needed to adjust the air gap of the plug. Still a useful tool to have if you do your own tune ups. (Or fixing those free power tools) Pre-gapped plugs from the local auto parts store cannot always be trusted to have the correct gap. It's worth a quick check before putting in your engines.

Haha. The wheels are crazy. The two swivel wheels are ball bearings with a zerk fitting so I pumped a shot of trailer bearing grease in there. Now they swivel nicely! It is one heavy duty cart. Looks like it could roll into a mine!

Re: My garage, repurposed!

Came down with a stomach bug overnight! Gone through the whole family. I'm last. Super nauseous and feel like ****! Gonna take it easy today. But... I did manage to go pick up this freebie. Took the family then got everyone smoothies afterwards and did some other shopping. Big mistake for me! But this Sandusky metal office storage cabinet was worth it! Lol funny thing is I emailed on it last Monday then couldn't make it to pick it up. The guy went through two others who passed it up and emailed me back saying it was still available. Crazy! It's in new status. FREE!

When you turned those filing cabinets into "Craftsman" boxes, What kinda paint did you use? It looks really close to the Craftsman color, I have the same Chest as you and a couple of filing cabinets laying around.

It is rustoleum 2x paint + primer black and apple red. It is almost identical. But you can see a slight deference if you look closely. Good enough in my book. I've got a lot to paint now! I also got a quart of the black to roll it as well. Couldn't find a quart at home depot of the apple red. Going to look online and other stores. I think they have the same line at Walmart here locally.
