Re: My garage, repurposed!

SD: are you enjoying the PERFECT WEATHER now that the heat wave has passed through the desert? it's a WHITE CHRISTMAS up here today with about 4 inches on the ground and still snowing.

hope all is well in your part of the world and any updates even if it's only you drinking a beer next to your pool in 80 degrees to warm us up a little up here?

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Hey Drives! Hope you had some good holidays. It’s been too long since I posted and update so maybe I’ll do that now. Thanks for keeping in touch. Weather’s been beautiful all winter long. Hasn’t dipped much below the 70’s and the last couple weeks have been mid to upper 80’s! I’ve been tinkering around the garage a lot lately and just added some new goodies!

How are things going for you? I subbed to your new organizing thread. Looking forward to some good content on there!

Re: My garage, repurposed!

A lot of projects over our harsh Arizona winter! [emoji12] Just kidding about the winter. Haha. It’s been in the 80’s all week! Going to post some updates and try to keep up with posting and not go so long between!

I added some outlets in the ceiling, tied into the current switch that powers the ceiling fan and installed 12 new 6500k LED lights. Got two Barina 6 pack’s from Amazon that are super easy to install and very bright... been a long time coming for better lighting!

A couple weeks ago I picked up this used dw744 table saw in great condition.

Earlier this week I ordered a brand new 12” sliding compound miter saw, it got to me in two days! This dw779 model is the same as the dw780 without the light. I found it online for 349 with free shipping and felt like that was a really good deal. I kept an eye on used ones for a while but decided to go new and get this one. I think I’ll do the mod to add a sewing light to it eventually to get the blade shadowing.

I rearranged some shelves and cut some 1/4” pegboard I had laying around for them to sit on. Very soon I’ll be building a portable miter saw station and doing some more major rearranging. I’d like to build a rolling platform for the table saw as well with some kind if out-feed.
dc03404d3e5d0082af0d76b46970cb7a.jpg

I’m thinking of a miter saw station similar to this with wings that would flip up to match it, but I may just build it all instead. Haven’t decided yet. I’d like to get into some woodworking here and there.

First project with the saws will be to finally build a rack for all my harbor freight storage organizers! I’ve been talking about doing that for a long time now! Well, the first project may actually end up being a laundry cabinet over the washer dryer for the wifey!!

Last weekend I replaced the passenger side rear wheel bearing/hub assembly on our Honda. It was getting louder and louder so it was time!

74adc946cfad707e89aa87b4d3989415.jpg

A few months ago I put together a desk for the wife and I to share in our home office. I had picked up these 6ft white tabletops free in Seattle almost 5 years ago! Finally put two of them to use here. Picked up some cube shelves from Target for the bases. Excuse the mess, was right after putting it together.

I used the other one I had to build the kiddos a LEGO table. They love it!

Yes, they have a giant playroom and too many toys! Haha. Thanks for looking!

My garage, always evolving!

Well, I couldn’t wait to start building a miter saw stand. Hit Home Depot and Harbor Freight early this morning and got started! 3/4 plywood with 2 x 3’s underneath. HF locking casters. All glued and pocket screwed.

Tons of pocket holes! My first time doing them.

Here’s where I’m at tonight. Next is the angle for the harbor freight cases, it will hold 20 regular and two large on the bottom. Then I’ll start the fold up wings with fence and stop tracks.

The back side will either have 6 drawers or more storage cases. I haven’t decided yet.

Re: My garage, always evolving!

I made ton of progress today. This week I’ll work on the fold up wings. Ended up having some black bins that fit perfectly so I added three shelves to the back. Used the other side for scrap wood. Also installed a 4 outlet receptacle I had a with 10’ cord. I do think I’ll stain it all with some danish oil soon to protect it and darken it up. This project has turned out very good and I’m really satisfied!

Added some coat hooks to store the cord.

Re: My garage, always evolving!

Miter cart turned out nice. Interested to see what you do for the table saw, I have a similar one incoming that I'd like a mobile station for.

Re: My garage, always evolving!

Got my pocket jig today and some adhesive taps for the miter saw’s fences. T track and knob kit comes Wednesday. I borrowed my neighbors Kreg Jig this weekend but thought I’d try this set out. Looks pretty cool.

SD: happy to see you have survived 2 summers in God's Waiting room cause i bet summers are HOT even with a nice pool in your back yard.

if you want to see a few members comments on the Kreig jig and maybe your jig if you bought it at HF check out the Woodworking 101 thread and heres' the link:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=344153

I think the Jig conversations were maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago on that thread. also if you have time to post up your cool cart on that thread I know some of the members would love to see it if they didn't see it here.

it's a keeper and here's a few tables i've saved pictures of for my miter bench that i'm going to build some day in case you are still looking for ideas.

keep up the great work

Thanks Drives! I did make it through another summer. Gotta be honest, I’m not looking forward to it, it’ll be hitting a hundred in a few months! I’m going to have to get A/C in the garage!

I am subbed to the woodworking thread and check it out often. I’ll have to throw some pic up there.

Those tables look great, I can’t wait to start on a table saw outfeed table. I’ve seen a couple of those pics while browsing images on the net for ideas. I have an idea of how I’ll be doing it, I’m thinking of some massive reorganization with my current tool storage and making a project table on wheels out of some cabinets that would **** up against my table saw station and act as an outfeed table. I’ll probably change my mind 10 times by then though!

SD: good to hear that you are surviving and 1/2 Cup just put in a mini split AC in his Shed Downunder (you should really read his thread if you have time) and I bet you could use something like his Mitsubishi.

here's a few more benches i found online today while looking for 2 miter saws next to each other that another member mentioned might work for me since I have one nice Dewalt 12 inch compound miter with a good blade on it for nice cutting and for all the woodbutchering to put my Makita next to it on the same level.

anyway i need to build my woodworking shop/shed before I build one of these benches, but I like looking and planning ahead.

your miter bench and storage is looking great BTW.

cheers

Next I’ll finish the other wing and then get started sanding and staining the whole cabinet!

I’d like to build a push stick similar to this this weekend also.

I agree, as it sits it shows your Father!

Thanks! I haven’t touched it since that post 4 years ago. I have been thinking though, I need to go through it’s contents and use some of the tools. I know he’d like that. Thanks for posting!

SD: with your warm days and sunshine I'd probably rub a few coats of BLO (boiled linseed oil) on your new COOL/AWESOME/QUALITY new miter bench cart. or are you thinking of painting it or leaving it as is?

nice work and WELL DONE!!

(PS. now i want to build one)

I put two coats of satin water based polyurethane on it to keep it as clear and natural as possible. I was going to do some danish oil and do it darker but then changed my mind.

You should build one! For your DeWalt. Even if just a basic cart for now or use a metal file/card cabinet you have, add casters and mount it to that for convenience.

I was going to do something similar like this but decided to build and integrate the harbor freight storage cases.

Made my first ever push block and push sticks. Sanded them smooth. They were completely random, not drawn out. Fit nicely in my table saw too which I didn’t plan.

Ok, I’m calling this finished for now. Got the measuring tape dialed in. Added some to the saws fence as well as the wing fences.

On to the next projects. I’ll be making a table saw cart and then an out feed/ assembly table that will **** up to it. Both on wheels that can roll into my racking.

I’d like to get some hardwood and make a mallet too.

SD: your new MITER CART looks great. would you change anything about it if you were to build another one?

I can't recall what model # my Dewalt 12 inch compound miter saw is that I bought used last year and it's maybe 8 years old, but i love mine. is yours new and what model #?

also i noticed you hooked it up to your shop vac and wondering if that eliminates a lot of the sawdust and dust?

WELL DONE SIR!!

WELL DONE SIR!!

Thanks Drives. It is a DW779. This model is the exact same as the DW780 that sells for $599. The only difference is it doesn’t have the XPS light system. I found it online at factoryauthorizedoutlet.com shipped for $349. Normally I try to source used tools but I was tired of looking for the exact one I wanted, and it would be in horrible condition. I ordered this one on a Sunday and had it by Tuesday! It’s a great saw! I also love the Bosch GCM12SD glide style that doesn’t take up so much depth with the slide mechanism but they’re like $650.

I’m pretty happy about this one! If I had to change one thing I’d have used different holders for the harbor freight bins. I spent like $48 on the angle material! Cut each piece to length to find out the bins don’t slide as easy as I’d like on it. They slide easy if you press up so they can slide on the rail right above them. Not a huge deal but I should’ve tested it a little better. Someday I may add hardboard on each slot of angle to give middle support as well. It can just rest on the angle, then they’d slide very nicely.

The shop vac helps BIG time but this saw still throws a lot out the back. My shop vac is a wall mount craftsman with the wireless on/off so it’s super handy to turn it in and off at each use. A lot of people have built a box around the back but I’m not using it all day everyday like a woodworking shop does so I’ll make do with it. As I do more, someday I’ll add dust collection. Definitely someday when I have a dedicated shop where tools don’t have to be put away often. I picked up a 1 1/4” rubber pipe coupling for the back of the saw, the vac hose fits perfectly and I tighten the worm drive clamp just enough that I can slide it in and out easily and switch it to the table saw.

Sat down and did some planning for the mobile work table/table saw out feed today. Also ordered a set of 4 220lb rated casters for it off amazon. The drawer bases I have for it are heavy empty so I wanted to make sure the casters were heavy duty.

I got started by cutting the 2x4 base and then the kids friends came over, the neighbors got home and before we knew it the whole streets worth of kids were riding bikes and playing outside our house. Stopped at that point to visit and hang out.

Rolling bench is coming along nicely. Going to surround the sides and back with 1/4” pegboard to hang some tools for quick grab.

This thing is very heavy. I attached a brace across with a 2x4 between the two cabinets at the top to try and keep it from sagging in the middle. Hopefully I don’t have to add more casters in the middle!

SD: your new bench is coming along nicely and looking good. i don't think your casters are your week point, but i'm not an engineer. if you have one piece of plywood over that frame you showed in an earlier picture under your metal cabinets/drawers then the screws or nails holding the 2 by's together might be a place to look for failure before you need a couple more casters. also depends how much weight you are going to put in the drawers. if you are planning on loading it up with quite a bit of weight and you want to put a couple more casters in the middle that might not be a bad idea.

keep up the great work and we could use some of your heat cause it's snowing as i'm writing this. I bet that makes you smile!!

Drives... no warmth here, been 34 and 35 each morning. Luckily we have no snow but this is too cold for us here!

The drawers are loaded pretty heavy now with sockets and other heavy things. I plan to reorganize all my tools and separate the mechanic style tools to my craftsman stack and keep lighter woodworking type tools in these drawers so that’ll lighten the load.

I added pegboard to the backside and started hanging some stuff. I’m going to go through my Dad’s old box and see what else cool I could hang on display.

SD: you're being too kind cause i bet it's 70's or maybe 80 degrees in the middle of the day even though the mornings and late evenings might be a bit chilly.

nice idea with the pegboard on the back of your bench and i think i own and use all those tools too.

keep up the great work cause it looks like you are on fire and I bet you are enjoying all the progress you've made.

cheers

Huge progress today on the table saw station. Added some more pegboard to the sides of the rolling table and some accessories too. I sanded the tops of the saw station between each of 3 coats of polyurethane.

Now I’m debating on whether I want to paint the wood frame around the black metal cabinets red to match my others or stain it darker. Haven’t decided yet. These turned out so well. After lots of calculating to get the tops to match exactly it all worked out great! Very satisfied.

Table saw and outfeed/mobile carts look great, and well thought out.

I really need to get a pocket hole jig!

It's helped me to see what you made. Been looking on YouTube, too. I'm going to have to go more compact and no dedicated outfeed table due to space and storage. Thinking about something modular that I can attach to the forthcoming table saw cart on one end and either a wall or something like the Kreg mobile project center on the other (been wanting to get one of those eventually, anyways).

P.S. I'm a fan of the Wolf Pup

SD: tables are looking great and keep up the great work. i didn't know you had this much room for all of these, but i'm guessing you do.

also since i looks like you are probably going to use those saws a lot get yourself a good face mask and dust mask especially if you are going to cut a lot of MDF for stuff cause that stuff is almost toxic with it's fine dust. a better set of ear protection too would help you not lose your hearing like i have.

hope it's warming up a bit for you. are you planning on making anything specific or just getting ready so you can build or fix whatever happens to be needed or that you want to?

Thanks Drives. My garage is 20x25 so it’s working out. I’ll post after these replies with some updates and show how it all fits with the truck in the garage. It rained today but it’s supposed to be back up in 70’s this weekend! Yay.

I do need a good mask. I’ve been using disposables when I sand or cut a lot but they don’t cut it. I like RZ Masks but may order a 3M with interchangeable filters for dust and chemicals. I’ve got ear protection that works ok but need to upgrade those too and get my kids some so they can start learning about power tools!

I have some projects I’d like to do including a nice wooden bar/cart for our back patio, maybe some other outdoor furniture. In the shop I’d like to make some wooden drawer organizers, a wooden mallet and tackle some simple starter woodworking projects. I want to learn how to do different joints, use a planer and jointer, use hand planers and chisels and be able to sharpen them and just simply be able to build whatever I want. I told the wife I’m practicing so I can build us a complete closet organizer. [emoji16]

Miter cart and out feed table came out great!

Thanks Bagged. Appreciate your comments!

Thanks! I’ve seen some great out feeds that attach to the saw and fold down for storage, just google diy table saw out feed and check out all the images!

Wolf pup is delicious. We also have been liking All Day IPA and Golden Road’s Ride on. It’s in a pink can. Thanks for commenting!

So here is how it’s all fitting now to store away. I’ll keep it set up out in the open when working on a project but I wanted to be able to get the truck in the garage during our hot summers at the least!

I started removing the sockets and such from the drawer bases to shed some weight in them. I want to get them in my craftsman stack separated in drawers by metric and SAE. Next I need to go through its drawers and pull some old stuff out and find new homes for it to make room for the sockets.

I’m also debating in building some plywood cabinets above the long bench with some French cleats. I’d like to integrate some drill and charger storage and other stuff like this:

I’ll change my mind 10 times though!

You caught me off guard with the thread name change. The shop looks great. I only wish I had the space to do some of those mobile ideas. They are going to make your time in the shop so much more productive.

Haha sorry for that. My life has changed over the years and I haven’t done as much repurposing lately so I figured a name change was fitting. Actually thinking about changing it again but maybe I’ll wait.

Looking forward to your posts about your new RV! We would like to get one in the next year or two!

Looking forward to your posts about your new RV! We would like to get one in the next year or two!

I was watching a RV show and they said 2 of the biggest RV places where in FL and AZ. Went took road trip from Portland Or to FL I can see there is a lot nice places to see out there.
