My Jet Jointer/Planer motor decided to smoke!!!

So I have had this jointer / planer for about ten years and I have loved it. All of the sudden while planing some wood I smelled something like plastic burning. Eventually I looked under the device and a little bit of smoke was coming out of the motor.

I dismantled it last night and still need to get the pulley off of it. The brushes I think are ok, but I am not sure about the inside of the motor. The motor cost $350 to replace it, so I hope it’s fixable!!!

Check out surplus center for a motor with the same frame size. No way would I pay $300 for that motor.

I would love to find a replacement motor. But to find one that matches the 1900rpm would be difficult.

1750 would be very easy. And likely close enough. Highly doubt it was ever 1900. What’s the hp rating? Could get a 3-phase and a vfd for probably >$300

Measure the bolt pattern and stand off height and output shaft dimensions. I bet you can find one. Figure out what motor frame size it is. For a 110v motor I assume.

I realize you just lost your baby. But you can do it! It will be easy to replace this. Just be sure to to get a continuous use motor. I’m sure there are plenty on amazon or eBay once you identify the Moter size. Lots of internet sites with that information available once you have a couple measurements.

Once the magic factory smoke gets out...it doesn't go back in well!

Agreed with checking other sites...someone is making that motor for jet and they try to use off the shelf parts so it's likely available cheaper elsewhere

Alternator/starter/motor repair shop would probably rebuild it for less than the cost of new and you'd be supporting a small business in the process.
This is not a starter or alternator. It's a small AC motor with severe damage. I suspect a motor repair shop would direct you to buy a new motor.

I would expect 2x to 3x the replacement cost, *if* you could find someone to rebuild it. Unless it's unavailable replacement is cheaper until you get into bigger sizes.

Take it into a good motor electric shop. They will tell you your options. They may be able to rewind it for you

When you buy a power tool that was built to a "Price Point", you eventually find out why the lower priced tool was cheaper.

On belt drive equipment, changing pulley sizes can often get you the speed you want.

There is absolutely nothing on the motor that has any information on it.
The only thing the manual says is "Voltage 120v, 60Hz, 13A".

Cost to find out what the shop says is the time to locate a phone number plus $0.00.

@1Garageman I saw this reference - it may relate to your machine. Is it possible you have a 19,000 RPM motor, not 1900? I'm thinking this is similar to a router motor and the CUTTER HEAD is actually geared DOWN to 9000 RPM. Your motor certainly has a small pulley, so I doubt it's turning slowly.

Is the cutter head pulley about twice the diameter of the motor pulley?

I might be close to being twice the size. Here is a picture of itIMG_4069.jpeg

That is about every lunch box planers demise i have seen, those universal motors are not designed for a long life like an induction motor

A lunch box planer is a portable tool. Having a motor that weighs almost as much as the rest of the machine would be a questionable engineering choice.

There are plenty of 40-50 year old portable table saws with universal motors just like this one working just fine to this day.

Thank you for the tip on this! There are so many different blades you can buy for them now days.
I considered replacing it for something with the square carbide cutters, but this leaves a nice finish. Every now and then I ponder a unit that uses inserts but I have not really needed it.

The local motor /electric shop charges $20 to look at a motor and give an estimate.

That’s from maybe four or five years ago, so it’s likely more now.

I understand the charge, and I’m ok with it. Keeps grandpa from dragging in old relics or throw away imports.

Their bread and butter is industrial motors, not hobbiest type motors.

His advice when my lift motor took a dump was to buy a new one. A complete new power pack was the best economic option.

Yes,but it doesn’t make my statement any less true. None of the wood workers I am friends with that owned lunchbox planers bought them because they were portable. They never lifted them again after setting them on a shop cart except to throw them in the scrap bin when they died an early death, to make way for a standard planer. They all bought lunchbox planers as they were enticed by the cheap buy in price

The average job site saw isn’t loaded like a planer typically is nor is the duty cycle so high.

I have never, even with my unisaw, ripped 100’s of lineal feet of 3” hardwood in 8’ boards for an hour

But every time I use a planer I am making at least 6 passes per board. It’s typically hardwood as pine can be bought cheaply s4s. And the planers motor never gets but 5 seconds rest to lower the head. Not feeding back to back increases snipe so the poor things never get a rest.

Yeah frankly I can't believe my 735 is still going. There are times I won't use it for 4 months, and then I'll run it straight for quite a while.... Especially since I purchased it used and they'd obviously used it hard because the blower motor was broken, well actually it wasn't the blower motor that was broke and it was the plastic assembly inside so I had to take it apart and replace that.

That has no right to still be functioning
