Figured I'd post up my initial impressions of the new Evo chop saw....after cutting some mild steel 1-1/4", 16ga square tube.....THIS THING ROCKS! I see the abrasive saw collecting dust for the foreseeable future

Cart material order was placed at 8am'ish, picked up around 3pm'ish....really like having a Metal Supermarket so close....just wish my local metal scrapper was as close and flexible with hours

Home and unloaded and ready for evening shop time

These cuts are fresh off the saw, no debur

Hard to tell in the photo the amount of chips, its not crazy, but there is a fair amount, but I guess that is to be expected with an ~1/8" blade cut width, will be curious to see how it does on the cart with the chip collector/chute

Closing thought....it is a bit loud, but not as loud as the abrasive saw and you dont end up with that lingering burnt metal/abrasive smell once done using the saw. Will be curious how it does with stainless steel, but again, I see it being a huge upgrade. (y)(y) Would recommend (y)(y)

Didn't get much shop time last night....wife accepted a new job at work, as did I recently, so we decided to get out of the house and go have a couple beers at our local brewery...

However, I did make some CAD templates at lunch yesterday....realized I was interpreting my math wrong, so the fit wasn't great, as you can kind of see here...but it made me realize my mistake, then drew the actual pieces out on the sheet metal and everything seems like its going to work

Bad fit cardboard, but Good fit on my corners, new saw, muy bueno (y)(y)
53547377474_3c31b99bbc_b.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Patterns drawn....I realized that when I was calculating everything in excel I had calculated the hypotenuse of a triangle, which I thought would be the corner, but in fact it should have been straight up the center of the bend...so after discovering that, drew these out, and now both my corner and the center line measurements are identical for each pattern which is short side/long side....that may or not make sense...lol

Fun weekend filled with checking another project off the list....Saturday started with butchering the Crepe Myrtle in the front yard, hated to do it, but it was so out of control it needed to be brought back to square one....no photos of the savagery to protect the innocent

After that was done I shifted focus to the Evo saw cart....tested out my new metal shears, worked great, then set out to put some bead rolls in the sheet metal for the chip chute....trying to use that tool where possible so when I start making panels for my car they look halfway decent

In the name of continuing to evolve the work space, the hydraulic press got moved so the saw could be closer to the work bench, seems like it will be a good spot with plenty of room on either end for working with long(er) pieces of stock when needed

Can i pick your brain, I am needing to remove the stupid soft-touch material that VW used in the Mk4's do you have any tips or tricks?
To be honest, I've never found a "silver bullet" method, I've used goo gone, rubbing alcohol both with a green scotch bright....typically it is just an annoying/cumbersome process.

But when you do finally have it all removed, a good cleaning with this soap/wash and then use the SEM trim paint, it will look like new

Well done on that stand!
Thanks!

My latest order from JMD tubes showed up yesterday....so after my close to last work light day of this week, went out to the garage, eyeballed my last bend, took a leap of faith, marked it, cut it, fit it....much to my delight and surprise, it fit like a glove!

The leg on the 180 was ~1" too short, not a big deal, that will never be seen....this was fit up...if you look closely you can see where I taped the 1/4" deepwell to the runner below to ensure access to that last manifold flange nut
53558745791_4b4bce604e_b.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Decided it was close enough for gov't work and tacked it up....very close to calling the headers done and moving onto the next steps, which I am currently ruminating on! lol Which I should have plenty of time to do next week while traveling/onboarding for the new job

Lastly an over head shot....symmetry isn't perfect, but I am going to say its a "B" for a rookie!

Headers are looking great. I would love to hear how this thing sounds.

Hopefully one day sooner than later I'll be able to post up a video!

Got invited to a super cool event last night at our local Audi dealer.....some may know that there was an event out in CO a couple weeks ago called FAT International (https://fat-international.com/) where a bunch of cool cars did cool things on ice/snow, LOL

Anyway, the two Audi Pikes Peak cars left there and where heading to Amelia Island for the concourse this weekend, and they stopped at our local Audi/VW dealer for a little show/tell....not only were the cars on display, got to hear some cool stories about them....they also took them outside and ripped them up/down the road a couple times....figured this group would enjoy

The newer one was quite tame rolling out... the return pass was a nice surprise!

Is there a post where you explain the start/scope of the V8 project or where the idea came from? Crime of opportunity with the motor choice or?

I'm sure between cold tires, cold tarmac, old school turbos (late spool), crowd, etc....that was the "comfort" zone.....either way, the red car certainly made some great sounds

Widebody car, this version is being documented over to grassroots motorsports....that gives some history, and a few more photos than what I typically post here, plus it is focused on the build, not in/out with house projects, that I post here

Thanks for the buildout link!

FYI the link is missing the .com in there- fixed it in my quote.

Back from a whirlwind of a week with my new company and boss for on-boarding. Its nice to start someplace, get involved immediately, certainly solidifies my decision.

No much in the way of updates....I had secretly hoped that I was going to be able to come on GJ today and post that my wife and I were under contract on a new house/shop setup.....but that fell through...I'll save the gorey details, but there is an older brick range on 7.5ac w/a 60x60 shop not even 1mile from us that has been on the market for almost a year, we decided after looking at it two weeks ago (and talking with the realtor) to make an offer....we hit them at 2/3 the ask price, which is actually a very logical spot, but after 3days they said it was too low....oh well...

In other news, trying to get the last remnants of the laundry addition wrapped up, which will be the snowball of the back of the house siding, then deck, then new gate....so tonight I started ripping down the old siding...still need to take the old old grey siding off....job for tomorrow night after a dump run tomorrow.

Green vinyl is out...going to be replaced with board and batten

Now for some small shop things....finally bit the bullet and picked up a legit welding hood...i have to say, I am very impressed and I should not have waited this long!

Put it to the test Sunday morning...helped a buddy out with an o2 sensor bung welding job....told him to mark it, I'd stick it

Friend/customer marked two locations, I told him I like the straight section better for more consistent flow/reading (its for a stand alone ECU)

I have to have another 02 bung welded in too. have to run my rear 02 sensor still lol.

Good work, the sentinel hood looks awesome, I have a cheapo HF one and it functions but I really want a better one.

o2 sensors are good practice projects

I have a HF helmet that I'll keep around, along with my original miller fixed shade. I'll be curious to try the new hood with the MIG, but will definitely be putting a new cover on to keep the TIG one nice

I am having a friend of mine tig it in as it's on stainless, and i have not welded stainless, or on exhaust for that matter lol.

I've been welding stainless with my MIG, using 98/2 Argon CO2 mix and stainless wire. Seems to work OK.
Oh nice!

I usually disclose that "its possible" because most wont typically have stainless wire or that strong of an Argon mix. That setup sounds solid for being able to MIG stainless!

that strong of an Argon mix
@fouckhest, I had do do a song and dance to get that mix from the local welding supply place. I tried TIG with 100% Argon but I zapped myself a couple of times feeding the stainless rod into the puddle. A sweaty stump inside a prosthesis socket makes a decent conductor, as does the braided stainless cable that actuates the stainless hook.
