I use this procedure anytime I at working at a wheel end and the caliper has to be removed, not just on brake jobs. If I have to pull an axle shaft or unit bearing and brake work is not necessarily being completed but the calipers need to come off, I still use this procedure to avoid pushing trash back up towards the reservoir.

Nothing exciting photo wise from last nights progress, but spent some time getting the inside(barrels) of the front wheels cleaned up from all the axle grease. Gave the front wheels a little more love in the clean/repolish department, then mounted all the wheels, gave the rears a little love, then torqued the front axle nuts....very curious procedure, but followed the FSM, so she should be ready to take a test drive as soon as I put a front seat back in.
Nice to see the car back on the ground!

I like my quick connects for trickle chargers, I'd started installing one in the lower bumper grill a while ago when I had a few mins to play but not enough time to get involved in something big, so wrapped that up last night.

Looks like a weekend of house work ahead, I'd like to sneak in some garage organizing/cleaning time as well, then start putting together my plans to finish up the Golf and get moved back to the widebody car.

Thanks Mike, they really do! I need to get better about prioritizing "little jobs" like this, they always seemed to get put-off or pushed out, then when I complete them I always think, that took no time and has such a cool vibe.
Little shop jobs get me as well. I hung a small step ladder and a kneeling pad and all of a sudden I felt so accomplished. Its not that it was hard or time consuming it just feels like I have to get to a place where I just cant stand looking at it anymore. Just getting things up and off the floor makes me feel so much better.

My advice is to not put them off. I put them off for years in my last shop solely because my head was fixated on solely making money and racing.
When I built this shop and not having to deal with the business aspect I felt completely different about "making" the time to fabricate certain tools that I had wanted in the last shop for decades, yet never took the time to actually build.
Items like my axle fixtures for my fabrication table, the axle lowering fixture for my transmission jack, bench mounted fixture adapter, lathe stand, etc. The list goes on and on of projects that I actually conceived in my head 10+ years ago but didn't take the time to actually build them until the last 7 or so, yet they make working in the shop so much more enjoyable just having them completed.
For that I would suggest if there is something you want to build to heighten the enjoyment level of your shops, I would say do it now and enjoy them rather than putting them off. That's just advice from someone who regrets waiting so long.

I have wanted to do ports like that for my tenders but what are you guys mounting them to? All my air damns are open on the cars that have the tenders on so there isn't anything to mount to.

On the mk4 chassis vw the DS bumper vent is mostly closed so it's a perfect mounting spot
I did the plug in the white car on the outside b/c it will likely spend more time outside, so thought exterior was better. I did one on my silver car, which 100% lives inside, its located on the core support in a kind of inconspicuous area. I plan to do something similar with the Cayman at some point, likely when I do my ToD prep in a couple months

I had a small permanently mounted connection point on our Harleys because the batteries were so buried in the bikes. The only car I currently have a battery tender on is our Fifth Gen. Camaro and it lives in the shop so I just connect the tender directly to the battery connection points to keep wiring under the hood minimal. If it were to live outside, I think I would do as you and create a small inconspicuous connection point in an easy to reach location.

have thoroughly enjoyed reading through this thread for the past week!
i was looking for some inspiration for a garage i plan on building at my new home and wanted to see garages around the 7m mark in width (~23ft in american money) and this popped up right at the top of the page! it wont be as deep as yours is, and i certainly aint lucky enough to have it attach to a basement, but it was still good to see the width and how you have utilized it, especially with a lift on one side and space on the other for another car!
was even better to receive the bonus VW content having owned a few in the past and having just finished a 6 year ground up build on a mk3 cabrio! look forward to keeping up to date with the garage, house and mk4's!

I need to see if there are any of those charging ports for my NOCO chargers. The ones I have don't have any provisions for mounting to a surface. The one in my Audi is just in the cowl area so I can access it without having to open the hood.

I thought most of the trickle chargers use the same port/adapter these days, I know both of mine do. Either way, I am sure you can make something work for you!
Quick update from my world....been a crazy couple weeks since my last update. The wife and I wrapped up work, headed to Colorado to spend a few days in the mountains on our annual ski trip. Hit up Telluride for the second year in a row, usually don't like the idea of back to back spots, but we loved the town and our other choice was making it difficult to figure out travel...so we went back....great 4 days of skiing, icing on the cake being a powder day on our last day of skiing, 10" of fresh show and blue skies are hard to beat!

Untitled by fouckhest, on FlickrThe weather was so nice this past weekend that it made for an easy decision to open up the garage and do a little work....I talked myself in cleaning up the new to me/car rear bumper, figured it was a good refresh/practice for the rest of the car. I didnt use any exotic material, since, well this is a budget (cough cough) project....I had bout some turtle wax buffing compound and wax, that was cutting it for some of the bad stuff, but I did have some old 3M pretty tough product in my detailing stash. So started with a good wash, then heavy cut, fine cut and a coat of wax...I'll save all the hard to see progress improvement photos....
Starting point from when I picked it up, gotta love cars that sit outside in the south

Telluride again The skiing is great for sure but the town itself is indeed a treat. Really need to bump getting back there towards the top of my travel list. Did you fly into the little airport or fly into Denver and drive out. The drive is beautiful but if they get fresh snow it is tricky and sometimes the route even shut down.

Honestly, the town was probably one of the biggest factors, we loved the town, our air bnb was so close to the gondola intown so also a close walk to town. We few into Montrose, same as last year, this year weather in/out, was great, last year we drove into town in a storm, it was definitely interesting.
You should get it back on the list of yearly trips! We are already talking about next year, we discussed Crested Butte early in the week, then the last day we rode a chair up with a woman that had a CB sticker on her ski, so we chatted her up, and she highly recommended it, so seems like that is high on our list.

Had to go to FL (booooo) end of last week for work, got back Friday night in time to have dinner with the wife. Saturday the weather wasn't looking the best, so had a slow morning then headed to the garage to see what I could get into with the white car. Sunday was looking nice, so figured i could get the car washed and ready for a cut/buff/wax on Sunday.
After a good bath, back in the garage it went to start cleaning the little nooks and crannies, biggest mess was the small area under the top of the hatch, looked like it had never been cleaned (of course forgot to take a before photo)
After photo is rewarding though!

A buddy and his wife stopped by so I had an extra set of hands to help with the bumper, so stuck it on....Unfortunately it looks like the passengers side is out of a groove, it needs some adjustment.
But, overall the paint has cleaned up nicely and it coming back together

In other news, I took the drivers seat to a local upholstery shop to see if they could fix the outer bolster....He seemed confident, and I have to admit, he did a good job. Its not a perfect match, but I think with a little time it will be come less and less noticeable

I won't line, there is a lot of temptation, but with two other cars, I need to focus on those first. However, there is a very specific and VERY hard to find old body kit that I've wanted (and slept on a few times), that if one pops up, it will certainly change the scope of this car 
Until then....the silver golf is back at PDR getting the roof/hood fixed up and ready for paint....Then the next big focus is on the widebody v-8 car, I need to get that thing back in the shop, I've not worked on it since before I went to the Philippines in October
Found a little bit of time in the shop last night. With the drivers seat back from repair, I wanted to focus on getting both front seats finished up, and with a fresh supply of multi-x, I was able to use my combination of, "spray stains with pretreat, spray full cushion with multi-x, brush seat with drill/brush combo, then spray with shampoo product, repeat brush, then vacuum with shampooer"
That was the process that yielded great results on the rear seats, knowing they were most likely used much less, my expectations for the front seats were curbed....but all-in-all, I am pleased...just need to get the plastic trim back on the driver seat tonight, then install time!

Also worked on fixing the rear bumper alignment bar, it was certainly bent causing the new rear bumper to fit poorly, should get that back together tonight, then hopefully have enough time to start reinstalling seats!
