The Cayman is a keeper in my opinion but understand about too many vehicles and the need to thin the herd.

It is a great car, I cannot argue about that, but when I took it to trade my buddy it had been 5months since I put gas in it and only driven it 240miles and that gas fill was only b/c I drove straight highway down to the BBS HQ for a car show, womp womp....The good news is, I've only put 7k miles on it in 3yrs, so its no where near a high miles car at this point!

Hope everyone had a good weekend, lots of little things here to get caught up on after being gone last weekend and as @Xti04 mentioned in his weekend recap, the weather here was rather horrible last week, cold and rainy every day. BUT, weather cleared up and we did our annual chili cookoff / Halloween shindig at my wives old neighborhood/cul de sac, always a fun time!

Saturday brought nice weather and decently warm temps, so we juggled a few random projects, starting with getting some "decor" hung up at my step daughters house, including the new to her TV, which meant I needed to get a new to us TV installed here...nothing special, so no photos lol.

Once we got that done, it was finally time to get the laundry room cabinet painted that has been a back burner project for too long due to a variety of weather changes/challenges. I originally wanted to spray it like the other one, but finally gave up on that and just rolled it, should have done that 6 months ago LOL

Started by getting the doors setup in the basement...painting the back first
54899073528_0e06d14340_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Then upstairs to paint the cabinet itself

54899072563_87985c5f65_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Then Saturday night I gave the fronts a first coat, finished them up yesterday. There is a couple bits of crud in them, plan is to get them installed, sand those spots down and touch them up
54897971182_7a2c38ece4_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

While the fronts were drying I got the cabinet secured to the wall, the outlets in the center made it easy to find a stud! Will see how much weight gets put in there and decide if it needs a couple more screws, but it feels pretty sturdy

In the midst of Saturdays adventures, I picked up the Cayman from my buddy that I borrowed the truck from, didn't feel like dealing with it last week during the crappy weather, plus the misses and I wanted to take a little drive on Sunday morning to see if there were any good colors up on the Blue Ridge Parkway (spoiler alert, nothing good), but the lower elevations on my favorite driving roads were nice, so she got her leaf peeping fix for the year.

After getting the car, I wanted to put the trailer in the back by the garage, so decided to see just how wide the gates open and if this was going to be a fiasco to get the trailer back there....lets just say threading the needle is an accurate depiction

BUT, as USPS says, "If it fits, It ships!"

With the trailer now safely stored in the back yard, the Cayman was parked and ready for our drive Sunday AM
54898842451_91219a49c6_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

After getting back from our drive and running a couple errands we headed back to the other house to finish the last of the hanging stuff chores and while my wife and daughter were watching their foozeball competition I set out to the garage to start work on the floor so I can get cars moved over there sooner than later.

Taking notes from @madison069 and @SilverJimmy I started prepping the floor for Sikaflex and backer rod (courtesy of @Boostingaz)
54897972352_2c563d1a3e_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

I didn't have as good of luck with using the same method for pushing the backer rod down in as @madison069, but stir stick still did the job, used the end of the logo as my stopping point, hopefully its enough, I'm estimating it is down ~3/8"
54897972362_e8f02ac1c2_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Couple hours and a couple beers later, feeling rather unpleasant from being hunched over, that task was complete

54899073678_0e155c9802_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Will be curious to run over there this week at some point and check it out, then figure out when I'll be able to catch a weather window to get the flooring sprayed.

Hope everyone has a good week!

Nice updates Mike. Yeah, that's a tight fitment between the trailer fenders and the gates, that is going to take some awareness when backing the trailer into the backyard.

The floor seams are looking good. At some point, I may have to follow suit and get my grandson to help me vacuum out the seams and fill mine in, when I run out of things to do.

Thanks, Mike

Funny enough, that was the first attempt and it was backing in also. I will call it mostly luck, with a touch of patients, I am actually equally concerned about trying to pull it straight out, will be interesting when the time comes.

Yikes on that trailer fitment! Is there any more adjustment room left on those gate hinges?

Adjustment, no, but I have a working theory about how I could redo the hinges and get more movement. Although, Its easy to pull the bolt from the roller wheel and that will allow the gate doors to open all the way to the fence. So I need to decide what v2 looks like, but for now, its manageable if I do need to get something wider back there.

I feel ya on the tight fit and the trailer. My boat and trailer is a squeeze to thread it in between the cabinets on the one side and the Jeep in the middle. It fits but it takes a perfect lineup and slow and steady backing it in.

Been a couple busy nights, unfortunately not too much photo worthy....

Monday night I went over to a buddies house to pick up a set of OEM 987 seats he has had in storage since I bought my car 3+yrs ago. Back when I sold my OEM seats he told me to come get them and sell them, well that came/went, but after the trip to OH, I hit him up and he said come get them! So that I did!

Once I got home, I knocked out a couple chores, including hanging the doors on the new cabinet. The tops are perfectly level, kind of annoying, but will wait till I see the cabinet guy again and see if he can advise the best way to "tweak" them.
54901691194_b2db236f09_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Quick Edit - forgot that the misses started to do some organizing of her own, this is her v1.0 of cabinet organization...sounds like a new trash can will be procured and/or relocated to free up more space. All TBD, I am in the execution group, not design or procurement :ROFLMAO:
54903843304_7d9c1eb6f0_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Last night was one of those after work nights where I just wanted to keep moving and do something, so started by picking up around the garage, then in the parts room, basically let my A.D.D. take control, but was rather nice to just get some things picked up/organized, etc., but as well all know, sometimes those things don't make for good photos, but I did get some old car parts listed on FBMP, so hopefully an evening of cleaning results in a few extra car parts funds.

I did manage to spend a little time in the garage proper and get the UHaul display hung up, not sure I 100% love it, but I think its kinda cool, debating putting a stuffed animal or maybe a plant in the trailer, not sure, open to suggestions...also hung up those couple little signs that have been sitting on the little shelf since I got the tiger up

I think my next project is going to be putting those new storage cabinets up on the bench below the trailer, since they are orange and black, they should look good there. Might be my project tonight

I like the UHaul hung on the wall Mike. I've been kicking around an idea or two to mount both my grandson's Radio Flyer project as well as his pedal car on the walls in my shop to get them off the floor and away from harm's way from damage.

Thanks Mike. That thing is deceivingly heavy, luckily we have a box of random little hooks, combined with the header board in front/on top of that window made for a nice secure place and allowed the wheel to lean on the window frame, so it was a nice clean install.

I think the pedal car and wagon would look super cool hung up, then when your grandson notices them, you can tell him they are his and he just has to wait a little longer to get to play with them! One more reason he will want to come to the shop, gotta check on his sweet rides!

Random, Funny and Fun turn of events yesterday....My buddy that lent me his trailer called Tuesday and asked if he could come grab it, I told him just say when and I'll have it ready. We coordinated that he would stop by Wednesday afternoon, which he did, showed up a bit late b/c he stopped at HF to pick up a winch, but had no plan on how to mount it. That being said, I was planning to make the tire rack on the trailer removable (with his permission) as a thank you for the use, but when he showed up with the winch, I suggested that I would mount the winch rather than do the tire rack project.

So, trailer was back down by the shop, I'm getting pretty good at fitting in through the gate LOL

Step 3 - quick mock up to ensure the fairlead would clear that front bar (will likely still suggest another roller at that edge). Note, I removed the tool box and the tape is marking the inside of the mounting feet, I wanted to give the winch as much protection/security as possible

Step 4 - Transfer punch the mounting holes for the winch base plate, drill pilot holes on the drill press, then finished them in the vise b/c my vise is small and wouldn't hold the plate

Step 5 - After a couple mockups on the trailer, I tacked the support braces to the top plate and then sat down at the welding table and burned them in. I also put a couple nice beads on the inside of the channel

Step 6 - Made sure everything was straight and true, then burned it onto the trailer

Step 7 - Installed some rivnuts, b/c why not when you have a nice tool to use!

Step 8 - Used my handy dandy paint shaker for some Rollbar and Chassis paint, then gave it a good coat

Step 9 - After admiring the work, having a cold beverage and watching the paint dry, we installed the base plate and the winch

I have to admit, for an unplanned project, this came out really well. It was rather rewarding to be able to essentially "slap" this together at a moments notice. From the time he stopped by ~4pm, I backed the trailer around at ~5pm and the final photo was taking around 815pm

While I planned on doing more cleaning/organizing last night, that was a fun change of pace!

I picked up that same winch to mount onto a receiver hitch so I can move it from trailer to trailer. Should work great loading my junk so I can move it to our new place. Only thing I did differently was I got the wireless remote control, should make it work so much better!

I am excited to see how it works, we were both discussing how interesting it is they come with rope rather than cable. He did mention going back to get the remote at a later date. That night was only mounting the winch, it was getting late enough that I was ready for dinner and he lives 30min away, so we didnt get it wired up.

Dyneema rope is amazing. Low stretch hollow braid, I use it a lot for special projects. 3/16 dyneema has a working load of over 1500 lbs compared to same size paracord and doesnt stretch at all. The bigger stuff has very impressive strength numbers and I dont get steel splinters from it like a cable can do.

Hope everyone had a good weekend, not an overly productive weekend due to dealing with a "tweaked" back that made pretty much any work difficult, but was able to get some work accomplished.

Saturday morning started with some household chores, then set off to the new house to get the floor in the garage sealed up! Weather was supposed to be in the 70s all weekend, so seemed like a great window.

Started by getting things moved out, pulled the tape from the sika flex and used the window scraper to get it leveled out
54914395271_d36cbee48a_c.jpgGhostshield 8510 by fouckhest, on Flickr

Got my HD sprayer assembled, shook up the product and went to town, my method ended up being a combination of spraying and then rolling. I purchased 3 gal of the 8510, this gave me enough for two plentiful coats and enough to coat the area under the awning/roof in front of the garage. Once I finished the outside area, I closed up all the doors to let it cure overnight
54914702895_5e11a1f449_c.jpgGhostshield 8510 by fouckhest, on Flickr

Went back Sunday to get things moved back in to the garage (had to leave my tool box and mini-split outside under a tarp), this was how the floor looked when I opened up, looks very nice, nothing seems to have had a negative reaction, so call it a win!
54914395216_9f95b5483f_c.jpgGhostshield 8510 by fouckhest, on Flickr

Ironically as we were uncovering thins, there was some water on one of the tarps from an overnight rain, this is how it beaded up on the outside area! Excited to see how it works in the garage, I didn't want to test it, just to continue to let it fully soak in/cure, not sure if that is even required, but figured it couldn't hurt

Hopefully next weekend or the following I will try and take the Cayman over to its new winter home, so I can start doing some work in my shop. In other news, one of my wives childhood friends mom is selling their long term home and while cleaning things out she came across this old sewing machine and we ended up with it! So adding a new to me cool tool that will hopefully allow me to learn a new skill!
54914702935_ce7f262215_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Got a short/fast work trip this week, so will be slow on the project front, but hoping to get the shop organized and cleaned up so that winter project mode can be kicked into high gear sooner than later! Seems like Thanksgiving weekend is usually the unofficial start for me, or at least the past couple years black Friday seems to have been the start of a project in one way or another, last year was the white TDi Golf, hoping this year, the Widebody Golf can take those honors!

Those old sewing machines are so cool, I don't blame you for taking it home. I have tried a bit of sewing when I first got into fat biking in the winter, and needed to modify some cold weather gear to work for me (the stiches are still holding...thank you very much). I would advise to start practicing on easy and cheap fabrics. Don't practice on things you will actually need to use....just ends in disappointment.

Hope everyone had a good weekend! For once we had a weekend not fully dedicated to house/garage projects which was a nice change. Saturday was our annual Friendsgiving, as usual it was filled with good times, lots of fire arms shooting, dirt bike riding, great conversations with new and old friends and great food and libations.

This years dirt bike selection, all were fun, but the Honda 175 is an absolute blast, buddy that owns all these recently picked it up and just got it running last week, has new plastics enroute, should be super cool once he's done restoring it

Picked up some range ammo so the wife could run some rounds through her pew pew, quick snap of the table that saw more variety than I could keep track of...few of these guys really like their toys!

With all of the fun behind us, back to reality and projects. Ordered a storm door with doggie door for the new house so my stepdaughter can take "her dog" with her, which will be a good added security measure to her house along with lightening the load here.

Also, since the floors in the garage at the other house have been left untouched for a week, it was time to test it out. Cayman fits and the dune buggy or the GTi should fit in the other side nicely, will be a tight fit, but its just storage, so should work well. Also been thinking about getting serious about a 4post lift to be able to stack cars on the door side and have more storage on the other, new side project, LOL

Nothing like a car to really put size into perspective

Finally got to use the cover I bought a couple years ago, all tucked in!

Oh, and door got installed!
54929576726_fde0ee8ae7_c.jpgUntitled by fouckhest, on Flickr

Once that was finished up, we headed home and I took some time to play in in the garage a little. Got the buggy out from under the project car, did a little clean up and even managed to find a little time to tinker with the project car, hoping to do more of that this week and get back into it!

For that winch mount, are the nutserts strong enough? Would bolts with washers and nuts underneath possibly be a better choice?

Garage is looking great!

Nutserts/Rivnuts actually have sneaky high tensile resistance, I am not super concerned, if for any reason they were to pull out, its an easy change and it would likely be noticed if a failure does start.

Nice....jealous of the range time. My go to range got sold to the local police dept due to the owner's health issues. The local PD's range was too small and outdated and they jumped on buying the range when it went up for sale. Pissed off a lot of people! I've got a bead on another place that is public, that I'm told is lightly used. Have a new to me WWII Stevens 620 Trench gun in 12ga I need to try out :). Just spent the morning cleaning and lubing it.....I want to try out the slam fire feature......;)

That's a bummer, this buddy has a nice setup where their property has a powerline right away on it so its a free great spot, just has to keep up with the mowing part. If it wasn't for his place we would be forced to go to an indoor range, so works well, could likely get out and shoot more often if we wanted, but between the drive being ~1hr and balancing other things in life the priority doesn't really get placed on going shooting.

My FIL has a Natural Gas Easement. We use that area to shoot as well. Its nice to have long stretches of open lanes between trees. We also have a Deer Blind set up on the corner.

Been a busy week, between work and finishing up little projects while we have nice weather. But with that, getting dark early does have some advantages, mostly, making it easier to get into the garage at a decent hour and do some work.

I've been getting back into my project car this week, which is exciting for me, more on that later. However, over the past couple weeks, I have been to dedicate some time to continuing to organize the garage, one annoying thing to me continues to be storing things like zip ties. I stumbled across this piece on FB somewhere, and for the price, I don't think I could have gone to a box store and bought PVC pipe and caps to make my own...so seemed like money well spent, especially after I received it.

It is quite nice for a jungle store purchase

Onto the project car, one of my biggest variables has been the steering column, I've never been super happy with the setup I built using only 3-4" DD bar and u-joints, so a few months ago I went to LKQ and grabbed an OEM mk4 vw steering column to put back in the car and see how things would look. Long/Short angles were too extreme, so something would have to give.

In this process one of the YT'rs I follow (and found b/c of a similar project, make FWD car RWD), decided he wanted PS in the car, so decided to put an electric assist column from a Prius in the car. After watching and seeing the simplicity of operation (no CAN interaction needed), off to fleabay I went and picked up a unit with controller and all

Fast forward to some general mockup in the car, I quickly realized the best way to approach this was with the dash bar out of the car. So out it came, and as they say, sometimes its better to be lucky than good...these mounting points were comically close to each other, so with a little modification of the OEM dash bar, I figured I could get this close enough for a good mock up

Lots of trimming later

I am hopefully optimistic this is heading in the right direction.

I did some additional mocking up/thinking with the OEM VW column, I need to spend some time tonight figuring out how to take it apart, hopefully in a non-destructive way, this LKQ unit is a little rough, so I am going to get another from fleabay that is in better shape and for the final version I will follow the same process.

Hopefully back at it tonight!

Speaking of working in the garage, got a couple solid days of working on the project car this weekend, was nice to see some progress and lines up well with my typical winter project season kicking off around Thanksgiving.

Since I found what I think is a manageable steering wheel location mocking up the EPS next step was to get seats mocked up to make sure I could find a seating position that would work. I had some 1x1 tubing in stock, so referenced the old seat mount brackets and tacked up some temporary cross braces

I think the rear mount may need to come up a little, but that is a fine tuning detail that can be dealt with down the road, this gets me in the ballpark

Next is where things have slowed and started to get a little tricky, I need to connect the VW column and the EPS, luckily both have slip shafts that will allow for telescoping columns, unlucky, things are very close is size, its time to get creative

Here are the two shafts, external splines are the OEM VW unit, the other is from the EPS

I cut each of them what seemed like a good spot to weld

Tacked up and smoothed out welds for a test

This is where things started to slow, in order to get the length right something needs to be shorter and ideally that would be the shaft on the EPS, but I am a bit stuck on how to move forward.

I started dissecting the EPS a little more, this collar is removable, so pulled it off to see if it would be possible to cut/weld the input shaft

Next pulled the cover to see how that shaft is attached, luckily it appears that there is a pin pressed in there, unfortunately, its pressed in there pretty tight and I could not get it to move with a hammer an punch, so need to think about how to go about holding it in the press or find some other creative way to get this pressed out so I can shorten that shaft

Luckily being a short holiday week and being a work from home employee, I hope to use this to my advantage and have a work lite week and do see what kind of progress i can make.
