I want to start a new thread about my shop. First I need help on posting pictures. I am on dish satellite and only have 15 gigs I think that is the correct term. This puts me on a very strict diet on picture posting. I would like someone to chime in and advise me how to post within my gig limit. Dish was is the only option for internet. I was told by the dish people that pictures will eat up my 15 gig very fast and then I will only have a slower than dial up connection. Thoughts.

I post all my pictures through my iPhone on an app called Tapatalk. My phone takes the pictures and then I upload them right from the phone. It's pretty simple and I don't think it uses that much bandwidth.

do you have wifi at work where you can sync your phone there and upload pictures to Photobucket rather than doing it from home. then you can just grab the img tag and paste it in. uploading pictures at full size takes up a bunch of data but just viewing a website it's not bad.

does Dish give you data to use in a specific window as well like Hughes sat internet does. with hughes 2 am to 8am is a separate bucket of high speed data

File size is the only thing you really have much control over. Resize to 1000 by *** and each picture should be under 500k. And making sure you're not clearing your buffer/cache each session. Otherwise you're downloading the same files twice when you're browsing.

You might also be able to shift to off peak hours and use their bonus data: "DISH does include bonus data in with its satellite internet plan as well, but this may only be used between 2 AM and 8 AM." I pulled that from their website, check your contract for details...

Hopefully you have a good tool for monitoring your network throughput and can keep a close eye on it.

Share the load between two providers.. if he's got coverage, or can post from work (their wifi/internet). Excellent idea.

Yes, but if you change the size of the pictures to just a bit less quality, it changes the size drastically, thus making the upload much faster.

I am by no means an expert on posing pictures and a hosting service is used called TinyPic.com and it is a free service.

Please forgive me if this is a little basic:

Once you have the site opened (TinyPic) along with Garage Journal, click on the Choose File button (TinyPic), and then, it takes you to your computer’s folders. Then go to your “pictures” folder and double click on the picture you want to upload. You will see the file name in the top dialog box. Then, there are 3 radio buttons next; one for Pictures, one for Video, one for URL. Just be sure to click on the pictures button if it shows something different. It should be check because this is (should be) the default setting. The next dialog box is the resizing feature. If you want the big pictures, just leave this as it is, and if you want a little smaller picture, click on the little arrow on the right (drop down menu) and click on Message Board (640x480). This is a pretty good sized picture and allows for better formatting while typing out how you did your build. After all this, click on the Upload button.

TinyPic will many times ask you to type in the word or phrase to gain access to the upload and once this has been completed and typed in correctly, click on the Upload Now button and your picture will be ready to be “copy and pasted.”

Click on the IMG Code for Forums and Message Boards. (Once you have clicked on this, the code will now be highlighted). Then from your key board, press the Control Key (ctrl) and the letter c. This will copy the information and allow it to be pasted into the body of your thread. To paste, (click in the body of your thread and at the point of where you want the picture to be placed) press the Control Key and the letter v, and there, you will see the code pasted into the body of your thread. (Assuming you’re a PC user, if Mac/Apple, it is a different key stroke which is command c to copy and command v to paste.)

To see the picture (the actual picture) click the “Preview Post” button at the bottom of the GJ window and then you will see the picture you just selected to add to your post. This all takes a few steps, however, once you get the hang of it, the process is pretty fast.

The following picture is from the 640x480 size choice:

kbwsjo.jpg

You can do this. It is easy.

Looking forward to seeing your project!

I will start with day one. I guess I will not start. My pictures are on a card from the camera. The card says power media player. I can't find a way to move any pictures to my computer. I can look at all the pictures with the card plugged into the slot on my computer but I can't move any. Not computer savvy walt

Right click on the pic, click copy, paste to desk top or folder on your computer.

930 and cougar I will try these things tomorrow. I can't do anything with pictures unless it is between 2AM and 8 AM. And to think I pay about $80.00 a month for a dish internet connection that you can't use during normal waking hours.

Do you have access to a public library? The one here has desk top computers for patrons and the library aids are quite helpful. The only problem is that it is first come, first served.

You can also send your pictures to the cloud at any location offering free wifi. I use Flicker as my photo host. With the right cable you can upload your pictures from your computer to your phone. Then you can send them to your photo host bypassing your Dish link.

I have a little media interface that connects to my computer through a short cable and an HDMI plug. When I process pictures I take the media card from my camera and plug it into the interface. My computer recognizes the media card and treats it as an external hard disc drive. I can open it by clicking "Computer" on the startup bar. This opens a box with all of the storage hard disc drives. From there I can move my pictures from the media card to a file on my C drive. With pictures destined to internet postings I open up PicMonkey.Com and bring up the first photo from the file and use the auto correct feature. I also have the option of cropping and resizing. I like 800 pixels wide. When the picture is ready to be posted I hit the "save" icon. This opens up a page where you can change the title, select your desired storage location, and reduce the volume of data associated with the picture. For internet purposes I select middle sized option but with your data limitations you may prefer the smallest size. Remember, the picture stays the same size but some degradation will occur.

These work arounds do me no good ??? I have tried all suggestions to no avail. When the card is installed into my computer I can see all the pictures on it with no way to move them. I know you folks are tired of my inability to produce photos and think maybe it is best to crawl back into my hole and revert back to lurker status.

Don't sweat it... you probably know how to do lots things that I don't know how to do, willingness to try and learn is more important! Take a look at this tutorial:

If you are still having trouble, PM me and I'd be happy to walk you through it.

The end of day 5 left me with a pad almost ready for a building. Today 9/20/16 I hope to order my building from Do It Yourself pole barns. If all goes well I should have a building by the end of October.:p That's all for now I ran out of time to do pictures on this wonderful (NOT) dish.

I think it would be worth only having satellite internet service if it meant I got to live in a beautiful place like that! Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Walt: great to see you were able to get pictures posted. is your 15 gig limit per month or for how long because that is quite a bit if only per month. in any case it looks like you figured out some of the issues and i use the paperclip to attach my pictures that you just click on. it's above where we write our posts in the middle and if you have pictures already on your computer you can post up to 7 pictures per post and if you have say 20 pictures just make 3 posts.

good luck and your dirt work looks great so far. have you figured in all the drainage and things you want to put under your cement because good to have it all figured out if you are going to have a building there in a month. if you already mentioned all this and i just skimmed and didn't see it i apologize.

Well I got carried away with being in the building. Now it looks like the end of December, unless I can find someone else to put it together. The first man I called said at least two months before he can get to it. POOP:sad:
I will try to find another person to build it. DIY told me I could have it in five weeks.

Walt: where abouts do you live? if you put your location in your profile it might even help you find a member that can build it for you or get you a referral? i've seen some of the member's 40x60's built and weathered in after 3 or 4 days with maybe a 3 or 4 man crew. granted yours is a bit bigger and all that means is it might take the pros a week if permits and all materials are on site.

good luck

I know it has been a long time since I posted anything but there wasn't anything to post. At last I ordered my building on Tuesday 10/11/16.:beer::willy_nil About four or five weeks to get a delivery.
Then a possible wait for my builder. I was told by the builder about three weeks from the start to finish.
I am ready.

Your local library should have internet that you can upload pics with, and do other things. Maybe someone already said that and I missed it.

Anyways, nice looking site! Can't wait to see further progress.
