My recent Racedeck install

Here are some pics of my new Racedeck floor in my new garage. The garage is 24 X 28 and the only resident is my 66 Mustang GT fastback. We moved to this new home in Ohio back in June and I’m just now getting around to working on the garage. It does have the look of a showplace type garage because my two year restoration on this car is complete and another car is in the distant future. There will be some light weight wrenching for sure but no welding or painting. I figure when I do find that 70 Mach I to fill the other bay I can always pull up part of the floor.

I won’t bore you with installation details, that has been covered here at length in other posts. Let’s just say I did it myself, easy to do and actually a fun project. I also won’t go into the “flooring wars” discussion; Racedeck was the solution that seemed to best fit my requirements.

This is a fantastic product. Ordering was a pleasure; the Racedeck folks were friendly and helpful. Got the GJ price which is a great deal, make sure you mention that you are a member! My order arrived in less than a week. All boxes showed up the same day and the order was exactly what it was supposed to be. The tiles are neatly boxed and come out clean and ready to install. There is no plastic residue or slag in the boxes from the production and packaging process. Quality control is evident. I did not receive any damaged tiles and all fit together perfectly. I managed to slightly damage only one tile and that was my fault and the tile is still fine and could be used. Folks, it’s hard to mess this up.

I did have a lot of tiles to trim on two sides of the garage because I wanted a finished look. Hated to cut up good tiles to get pieces less then 4 inches wide but it couldn’t be helped. I made sure to leave about a half inch gap between the tiles and the wall on all walls. To finish the look, I painted the exposed brick at the bottom of each wall red and used 4 inch black vinyl wall base to hide the gaps. The wall base is not glued yet, need to have a couple of days of 65 degree weather for the glue (not in Ohio anytime soon!) so they are just leaning against the walls for now.

Went with a black and alloy checkerboard pattern for the parking area, outlined in a row of red and a row of black. The walking and work areas are charcoal grey, also outlined in black. The tiles do make the garage darker but knew that would happen and my lighting is pretty good. I considered white but the Racedeck folks did not recommend it due to the additional work to keep it clean.

The tiles do make a clacking sound when you walk on them. I don’t care about that, not a big deal. I think the floor looks great and I moved everything you see in the garage myself with no signs of any scratches at all. This is a quality product, made right here in the USA. I am a new owner but from what I have seen, I highly recommend Racedeck to anyone. Not knocking any of the other quality alternatives found on this site but you owe it to yourself to at least consider this quality product!

I like the grey with the red and black outline, do you have any larger, or close up pictures?

I do but not sure how to post them. I used a direct link to Cardomain but the pictures come out pretty small. Is there a simple way to do this so you can click on them to see the larger picture like in some other posts?

just upload the pics to photobucket.com you'll need to sign up, but that's no big deal...there are billions of pics on the site:shocking:

Hellcat, Nice, very, very nice. So, it looks like your squares are 2 feet x 2 feet, right? You planned that out very nicely. Mine are enroute, I may have acted too quickly in just getting equal numbers of red and alloy for a checkerboard or some geometric lay out. I love your boarders-but then again, I have all kinds of **** along all three walls so borders wouldn't show anyway. Yours is a beautiful garage-nice to see how well it can be done. Rick

Thanks Rick. Yes, I like the look of the larger squares. Was going for the parking area and the work area look but of course it all works for either purpose. Getting some red in there was a priority but I probably could have done with less black. Still happy with the way it came out.

Question Hellcat-I see what looks like fine lines through the tiles and maybe I am not aware of their sizes but it almost looks like you used four tiles to make one large 2x2 square. Or do they come that size ?

the tiles are 12x12 and you use 4 to make 2x2 square, I did the same thing but in Black&White on my floor, looks much better that way than single tiles. I actually did both in my garage which shows the difference in the squares nicely. All white under the lift for light reflection but wow that white gets DIRTY !!!

Mikeyr is correct, used 4 tiles to make the larger squares. IMHO, the single tiles in a checkerboard pattern in an area that large would look very busy and somewhat distracting.

Hellcat - Your garage looks great, nicely installed as well!
Thanks for choosing RaceDeck

As for bigger garage tiles - We also have the RaceDeck XL which are 18"x18"

Hellcat,
Thanks for pointing me in this direction from the racedeck thread!! Very nice job, That's a great idea about the painting of the brick as well as the wall border. If not too much trouble could you tell me the brand and name of the red you used, it seems to match the racedeck really well.

Also, showing my ignorance here, if I go to Lowe's and ask for 4" black vinyl wall base will they know what I'm talking about? WIll this cover the 1/2" gap you left all the way around(for expansion I'm guessing?)

Thanks again!

Chris,

I used Safety Red from Rustoleum. Worked well with the RaceDeck and all of the red Craftsman stuff. Primed the bricks first as they really soak up the paint!

Yes, go to the flooring and ask for the vinyl wall base. My 1/2 inch wall gap was not always consistent, sometimes a little wider, sometimes a little narrower. But it looks like the wall base will cover the gap, I didn't attach it yet, waiting for warmer weather. It will need to be installed at a height so that the bottom of the wall base is just slightly hovering above the RaceDeck to allow for expansion but it should conceal the gap. If not clear, you'll see what I mean when you get it.

Fantastic job! It just occurred to me after looking at my past posts that I never posted pictures of my Racedeck install. Look familiar? :)

very nice looking...:bowdown:i am soo jelous!! mine has oil stains, and cracks!! haha :bounce:

Does the hoist just sit on top of the tiles??? Has anyone done something like this but using a two post instead of a 4 post, meaning it will require for the post to be bolted down??

Do you have a picture of how you set up the flooring with your scissor lift bendpak?

thank you.

Mine is NOT that clean anymore, that was the day it was installed and before a single wrench was turned on that floor.

The lift is sitting on top of the tiles, no issues and its been many years. 2 Post means cutting the tiles around the lift but that can be done very easily.

I did nothing to my floor for the scissor lift, just rolled it on the floor and started using it.

kool...

Thank you Mikeyr!!! How thick are those tiles and does dirt get in between them or underneath? And most importantly, how much are they? checked the racedeck site and I could not get any information on the cost.

PS: I hope you dont mind me asking more privately with regards to your bendpak scissor lift, I am interested in getting one.

I bought my tiles 7 years ago, the price I paid has been forgotten a long time ago. Your best bet is to contact Jorgen and get the Garage Journal price, he is here on the site and gives a great discount.

They are about 1/2" tall, maybe 5/8" never measured them. And they fit so tightly that very little if anything at all gets through the seams, when I moved 2 months ago and lifted the Racedeck to take to the new house, it was nice and clean under them, some oil had seeped through under the lift area where I do most of my work and most of my spills.

And ask away about the Bendpak...might be better to start a new thread instead of hijacking this one but ask away.

There are other manufacturers out there making floors. Best to ask the ones you are interested in to send you a few samples and read everything you can get your hands on. That is what I did and the answer for me was clearly RaceDeck.
