My shop/barn build thread

No real progress as of late. Ive actually been working a bit in there, instead of on it. Which is awesome.

But I did pick up a used 42" tv and chromecast for a sweet deal. Now I have a 42" Pandora display. I also got it tied into the stereo system. I am disappointed its not centered on the wall, but I put my support board in centered and the pivoting mount I bought caused an offset on the tv. Ill likely section and extend/shorten the mount at some point so its centered. For now its getting the job done.

I also got the last piece of plywood cut and painted near the boiler. So just down to that one area to paint up.

Needed a little more light over the welding table, which I had already planned for. Picked up a light friday and hung it saturday. I use some 1/16" steel cable and eyelets to hang it from the ceiling. To keep it from swinging and to run the wires to the wall box I used a 24" piece of 1/2" EMT. Much better lit over there now. I will likely put another perpendicular to this one over the sander and band saw, eventually.

Are you sure about the height of your ceiling when you add the lift? I'm building one with 12 ' walls and I'm concerned about garage door tracking being in way?

In my case the lift is going to be further back in the building and not at all under the garage door/ tracks. Otherwise, yes it would be an issue.

I am disappointed its not centered on the wall,

hang a couple pictures to the left, maybe some artsy ones of say the framing of the barn and the lay out of the floor heat lines, one over the other and it will make the TV look like it was designed to be there.

You place is coming along nicely, like the way you hung the new light.

Back in May I got most of the inside of the trailer painted, some shelves built, and finished up the PVC tool holder wall. Ive been using it a ton, its working out great. I still need to trim out the doors I built, Im hoping to get to that this week.

Friday I got the thrid HF box for the bench. I also added another section of wire shelving, hung my wire rack, reorganized and cleaned up a ton.

Its hard to see in this pic, but I also trimmed out the windows. Pine on the top and sides, and I used up some leftover Azek I had from the pool deck for the sills. Ill grab a better pic tonight when its dark out. Hard to get a good pic facing into the light from the windows.

Nothing too exciting, but I scored a few Akro bin panels (got two free b/c Zoro was unable to package the first two correctly) and decided to add them inside an old cabinet I got free. The cabinet needed a bit of work, hammering straight, grinding rust, replacing missing fasteners etc. Its been annoying me so I figured why not.

With this configuration I should have room for about 68 bins. The shelf under will be for spray paints. Im still unsure whats going to go below that. Im SURE Ill find something to fill it with.

I did get the shell of the cabinet painted last night. May try to get to the doors tonight or tomorrow. Likely going to sheet over the shelves with some new aluminum so they are a little stronger and I dont have to paint them.

Another boring update.

I didnt want to deal with trying to crawl under the foam I use to block off the stairs for winter again this year, what a pain.

Glued the 4 pieces of 2" foam together with some construction adhesive to make one large piece about 12' long, 42" wide. It seems stiff enough to not need any other support.

Then I came up with a simple lift system using a couple pulleys, some rope and a 15lb weight. I did need to make a catch to hold it open as its just under balanced to ensure it stays closed. Nothing fancy but its working great and I wont have to swear every time I want to go upstairs this winter.

So how is the wood working space upstairs working out for you? I have been thinking about doing the same but don't know if I would enjoy moving equipment, lumber, and projects up and down the stairs. I do like the idea of being able to put all of my dust ports/electrical in the floor though. I tend to do more woodworking than working on vehicles so I want the space to be easily accessible..

Its not bad. I dont do a ton of woodworking so for me it works out and it keeps the mess contained.

If I was just doing woodwork I would probably relocate it to the main floor, maybe.

Ive been off this week so I took some time to finish up a couple of projects downstairs.

1. Building doors for the compressor / boiler "room".

The doors are OSB on the outside, lined with some left over R13, and some left over sheetrock on the inside. Id like to get some seals for the door, but its blocking about 13dB from 5', which is a pretty damn good improvement. Next I need to plumb in some air lines at least to a couple locations. And Im going to add an after cooler between the compressor and tank. I figure I can run the lines up through the ceiling there and mount the cooler to the wall above.

2. Emptying out the last of the left over building supplies and painting the last bay under the stairs. Eventually Im going to make a small vented spray painting booth since I always seem to be spray bombing something. Not sure what else will go under here yet. Ive since moved that red box of scrap wood and everything else upstairs to the wood, shop or to the burn pile.

What size windows did you use? I'm building a 30x64x12' barn and Im wanting to put 4 windows along the 64' side like you have. What height is your wainscoting and how high did you end up making the windows the 2nd go around? Seems theyre basically even with the wainscoting.

I need the trailer to keep all the lawn junk in. It has no place, imo, in a shop space. Plus I hate the smell of cut grass. That alone is enough reason for me. No need for a bathroom, I have a sink. Plus the house is only 60' away.

What I meant is that you could build a shed off the back of the shop that matches the look of the shop, just like when you build an attached garage that matches the look of a house.

That was the original plan, I even put a header in to attach a shed roof when the building was going up.

I didnt go that route because:

1. Id need a variance, which is annoying and costs money
2. They would tax me on the difference in square feet
3. I would need a permit, more money / annoyance
4. It would have cost me more to build the shed off the back. I only paid $1500 for this, and its all stainless steel, so it should look like this for a long time.
5. This didnt require any permits, they cant tax me on it and I can move it anytime if I decide I want something bigger, or that I no longer need it.

Trimmed out the hole in the ceiling and got the insulation back in place. "fun times"

I did them before. I literally measured out every outlet box in the entire shop before I hung a single panel. I just left a little extra wire in case I had to shift them a bit. I think only a couple had to shift 1/4" or so.

Finally. Sorry, I keep forgetting when Im out here.

Windows are 32x54.

The wainscot on the outside is 48" tall.

The windows end up around 44" from the floor on the inside. My bench is 40" tall which gives another 4" to the windows. Makes it nice to be able to separate the window sill from the bench.

Back in Feb I finally ran some air lines. Decided to do copper since it was only going to be one drop at first and then I was going to run more later.... well in typical fashion it turned into plumbing the whole thing at once. All in all it cost me about $700 including a couple of good Wilkerson regulators and the huge DIY desiccant filter. I ordered all of the valves and fittings online which saved me a fortune compared to Lowes or HD pricing. I used flex hoses between the compressor and between each regulator to make servicing them easier. For some reason I dont have the finished pics of all the drops, but you get the idea. Maybe Ill grab some this week, but prob not.

Ive been running the air nearly every other night since I installed the desiccant filter and have yet to get a single drop of water in the wilkerson filter after it. So Id say its working out.

First the desiccant filter.

Some ss wire mesh epoxied into each end keeps the desiccant in place.

Bulk desiccant. My setup holds about 3.5lbs or half of this tub

And a drop near the overhead doors for filling tires etc.

I also ran a line to the woodshop upstairs. I rebuilt my old Sharpe regulator for up there (no pics)..


Finally mounted my tig filler to the welding table. Nothing fancy, just a bolt to support them and some safety wire to tie them to the leg.

Up next I made a rolling trolley and track for a hoist to aid in lifting wheels/tires up onto the shelf where I store them. Its just a HF hoist, some ebay skateboard wheels and some square tubing. The assembly bolts to the side of a truss in the attic (which was a real hoot to do)

And in place

I still need to string up a cable for a line cord to hang from. Probably zip tied to some shower curtain hooks or something so it moves with the trolley.
