I'll post pics of the wagon when it's done. PAINTING ISN'T AS EASY AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. Very frustrating and time consuming for the amature:headscrat :( . I've spent most of the time working on the body and prep before I even got to put the paint on. I'M DOING BASE COAT CLEAR COAT, another mistake, I should have gone with a single stage paint, with this being my first time. Go AHEAD YOU CAN LAUGH. Live and learn. :(

Anxious to see it as I'm interested in getting into painting. I was just thinking about how I could make a temporary paint booth in my place...now I have an example to work from. What did you do for ventilation?

HEy B.C.......Base Clear is easier than single stage and more forgiving. You get a run in single stage you more than likely have to live with it. You get a run in base / clear you can sand the run out. In the base coat you can sand the run and reshoot. And you have a 24 hr. time frame to clear the base. If you get a run in the clear, for the most part it will sand and buff, or you can sand and reclear it. Looking forward to seeing pics. And just so you know, there has been a lot of custom paint jobs come out of a garage!!

I saw a temporary spray both on the web some time ago, that looked similar. The bloke installed two cheap, wall exhaust fans and then used micro water sprays (the ones used for cooling outside in dry climates) to help catch the over spray. I’m considering using one of those cheap tent style garages for the booth structure.

Hahaha the joke is on me. I don't have any more room on my account to add the pics of the Pontiac when I complete it. I will have to post a link where you can go to see the pics.when I get it done.

bmwpower you asked (What did you do for ventilation?) not very much , LOL. I used a North Safety N95 & Organic Vapor Respirator and safety goggles. I used a larg exhaust fan at the side garage door and a shop vac,to draw in some of the fumes, hahahaha. Any way some guys use the fans and large flat filters. Down Under Bloke's idea with the water mist sounds good. The clear coat fumes are pretty nasty, they are much stronger then the paint fumes. I bet I put a big hole in the ozone directly over my garage, hehehe. Bib Overalls thanks for the compliments. Thanks for the encouragement. I just feel using the 2 stage system is like painting your vehicle twice. Aren't there any sigle stage systems that are forgiving as far as runs and minor mistakes. I THOUGHT YOU COULD COLOR SAND THEM OUT, if not this is very sad news for me. What i dislike about single stage if I want an exotic color i'm very limited. I SAW A MID NITE BLUE and a BLACK, even MAROON done with single stage and the depth of the paint and reflection is out of this world. Claer coats withstand the elements better I guess, but the mirror like finish seems to be superior with single stage dark colors. Thanks for the input everybody. OHH BY THE WAY , I found out if I wait a week or two after i put my last coat of clear on, it shines much better after all those chemicals and solvants have had a chance to be drawn out of the paint/clear. I think the difference is I don't have an oven or heat lamps. Before, I waited 24 hours to wet sand the clear and it came out very dull. A friend told me to wait about 5 to 8 days depending on the weather and then color sand the clear coat. He was right. It made a big difference. Any suggestions how long I should wait to wax the finish when I am done painting?

I was always told that for every hour of actual spraying paint time there is 5 hours of body prep time. Worked out about right on the fire truck I painted...

I liked the paint booth as well, think it could be made 50 feet long?

I'd definitely like to see some pics of the wagon when it's done!:)

I see there's a few of us around that have interest in wagons. I kept my retired everyday driver 1987 Caprice Classic wagon. I'd like to do a partial restoration on it in the future. The last few years I've been seeing a few wagons at cruises around by me and they're definitely something different to look at. I wouldn't mind having a Vista Cruiser like the 1969 model they had on That 70's Show and I also like the early 70's Country Squires with the hide away headlights.

We had a 1973 Gran Torino wagon when I was little and I remember playing in the back of that car with my Legos all the way to Florida. Of course that was before there were any seatbelt laws. That was a good running car, it just rotted out bad.

What year is your Tempest?

Well here is the link to my Pontiac I finished painting. I made a spray booth in my garage. Next time I'll do a better job of building a spray booth, lol at one point the thing almost collapesd on my car while painting. The other link is my friends new garage he opened up last year. Talk about ultimate space, WOW. Yes I was a little jealous when I first saw it but who wouldn't be? I get a little green with envy when I see how some of you guys build these MEGA GARAGES out in the sticks, LOL. The possibilities are limitless. Well keep it up I like looking at everybodies garage, keep the post coming.

Nice work on the Poncho. I am a big fan of base/clear paint work. I prefer using it to single stage any time I can. Budget jobs end up single stage otherwise all my work is base clear.
