The hose clamps on the BMW's fuel filter use these insidious things. Subtract the ten odd years of grime and that's how it looked from the factory (or so everyone else seems to claim). Hose clamps being as cheap as they are I replaced them already, but... what *is* that.

That's a Norma hose clamp, excellent quality and rolled edges so it won't cut into the rubber. The cheap ones you can pick up anywhere have too much play in the screw and could possibly loosen over time, plus they will cut into softer rubber.

Okay, what's used to tighten it? With only two flats, a socket doesn't work particularly well and a slotted screwdriver slips out.

Theres a special tool. IIRC AST makes one.

I might be making a fundamental error, but I'm pretty sure you pull on the free end, then tighten the screw down, locking it in place.

How did you get it off without letting the screw out?

Take a look at the head. You can use a slotted screwdriver to loosen but not tighten it.

Ahhh serves me right for not digging through the Samstag page. Any idea what the AST one is called or if there's a proper name for that type of screw?

Locking pliers worked well enough on the Volvo struts that have a similar bit up top, but were a non-starter on the fuel filter. Being under the car inhaling gasoline vapor means I want to get out of there ASAP.

That hose clamp is exclusive to BMW.

The Volvo shock piston is just the round end with two sides milled off, usually a 6/7/8mm open end wrench will hold it fine, Snap-on make a 6x8mm oval socket for that too though.
