Got the mast 16 sided today
Made a spar gage this morning to land the 16 sides.
One pencil bore for centerline, one for 8 sides and one for 16 sides
For cutting I tried power plane, spokeshave, block plane and drawknife.
I ended up using the drawknife and will finish with a plane.

I like the marking gauge, it’s amazing how well the simple things work! Did you have help with that glue up?

Thanks, I find it it interesting how the gauge compensates for the taper.
No help on the glue up and it was a bit of a fire drill.
3 ea 12oz batches of epoxy with slow hardener.

Gave it fog coat of paint to 32 side it by eye,
then disc sander with 40 grit to rough round,
60 grit belt glued to the inside of 4" plastic pipe to fair it,
80 grit on DA sander,
Lastly 150 grit on DA sander.
Finished the day filling a few tearouts from the draw knife with thickened epoxy.

Had quite a bit of time in shaping the mast and with 5 more spars to make I'm going to try another method.
My lathe has a 2 piece bed, so I split it apart and welded up a spool to bolt it back together.
Then rigged up a drum to run on a drill motor with a sanding belt turned inside out.
I'm hoping it will speed up the process.

Glued up the mizzen mast,
11'-6" long x 2-1/8" diameter, tapering to 1-1/2" at the base and 1-1/8" at the peak,
Also got a coat of varnish on the fore mast, It is a luxury to be able rotate it slowly till the varnish sets.

You’re something else Royce

How does the belt sander thing work again? Mind ya I’m on my phone so that’s bad enough. But am I seeing the belt turned inside out and you made a madrel to guide the belt plus hold the opposite side of the drill motor.

Thanks Cam,
Exactly
It could use a steady rest on the thinner mizzen mast
I bet. How much flex where you getting to maintain drive on the belt?

/me makes a mental note. When playing tug of war with Royce - I better eat my wheaties 💪

Made a steady rest out of a couple roller skates and aluminum strut and while crude, it serves the purpose.
Mizzen mast sanded ready for varnish.
Yard dry fit and ready for epoxy.

I was wondering what you might use for a mid-span support.
I used some old roller blades for summer training for the kids on the Polaris 120.

I'd get a good closeup photo of the end of that and get it framed for your shop/hobby room.
Details on the multi-vise could make some good shots too.

Got the yard 16 sided, then chucked up in the lathe, ready to make round.

Boom glued up.

Made two new and improved spar gauges, 1ea 8 sided and 1ea 16 sided.
These have 2 pencil bores and a no tool pencil clamp.
I had neglected to take off 1/2 the pin diameters on the first one, making it a 1/16" off.
The new ones are spot on.

That stool is old news, made it back when I still worked for a living, probably 15 or so years ago.
After losing two chairs for my drawing table in the job shack, I made it.
Made it heavy, so the lazy thieves would not steal it.

Got a couple of dirt cheap hospital beds, thinking I could use the frames, actuators and castors for something or other.
Turns out, one made a fine adjustable rolling cart for the boat project, with very little work.
Screwed some cradles to the headboard mounts and presto.

Royce
HillRom, might be a model 820? Been a while but used to work on those.

I can see the height adjust and tilt features being really handy for getting the bits you are working on at just the right height and angle.

At one time I had a much older manual hydraulic surgical table that I had modified for rebuilding transmissions for the same reasons. Ended up trading it for a freshly tuned Muncie Rock Crusher to a local transmission shop where it is still used daily, almost 20 years ago.

Got the mizzen boom shaped and jaws glued on.
Rather than making round, left it 8 sided.

Son of a family friend (25ish) bought and is refinishing a 26’ boat.

Been helping him a bit. More on the right products to use for different task, and outfitting him with tools.

I found this 14’ mizzen at a salvage yard for $20.

Needs refinishing, but should “Spruce” up nicely.

Nice to work with a driven young man. He’s proving to be quite capable.

Good on you Riv,
Always nice to see the young with tools in their hands and the electronics stowed.

Riv, I'll second @Royce's sentiment, he is helping you as much as you are helping him! Way to pay it back and forward! You may well be building a life long friendship or partnership. Harry
