Need a handle made or a source for new

Well when I bought my 6" Craftsman lathe, the handle for the cross slide was broke. The handles are made out of potmetal. I ended up finding a complete saddle and compound on EBay with all of the handles. When I received it and unboxed it, the handle I needed was broke To buy one is anywhere from $55 to $145.

If I sent one of the old handles to someone that is set up for machining, could someone make it for a reasonable price. I don't mind being fair, but for what the handle is, it's not worth the price they are commanding for them. I'd rather have a handle made out of steel, or if you have the means to chuck it up and screw the old handle to the old base to put it back together, that would also work. I just am not set up with a mill or a drill press to get the holes in where they should be.

Larger view. What breaks is the handle coming out of the smaller ball. I'm thinking that there is a demand for then due to the high cost. BTW...the one shown is going for $64,95 on EvilBay

As crude as it may seem. . . how about a round handle off of a valve. Drill a hole one section and stick a bolt in it, nut on each side to lock it.

$56. Job done. Push the buy it now button, you wont get anyone to make one (and plate it) any cheaper than that.
Dont know about your neck of the woods but $56 here wont buy an hours labour for a decent fitter and turner.

Sorry to say racingtadpole is probably right. Unless someone rogers up and does it as a favor, that handle is going to cost more in time than what evilbay is asking.

The handle is most likely threaded into the ball. Unscrew the broken piece, then buy a new handle to screw back in. Enco has 'em.

If they're not threaded, drill and tap, then thread one in.

My cross slide handwheel was missing both handles. I drilled out the holes and press fit new handles from Enco. The reason I press fit them was that they stuck out too far for my taste when simply threaded in. So I cut off the threads and pressed them in instead.

You have a lathe ......seems a reasonable substitute could be done on a lathe, though a small mill would obviously help. Does it really need to be chrome plated? The handles on my South Bend aren't.

I have the same lathe and had the same issue, broken handle. I just bite the bullet and bought one.

What I can tell you is these are IIRC a 5/25 shaft with a key way. The nut you see pictured in your first post has a slight taper to it and a matching taper on the handle. When its installed, the outer nut is tightened in then another locking nut is tightened from the carriage side of the the screw. There is no exposed thread outside the handle so getting some aftermarket handle and fabbing it on may not happen

I really hate to bite the bullet and buy one that is expensive. I thought I lucked out when I bought the complete saddle with all three handles, but by the time I got it out of the box, it was broken. And as I said, I'm not blaming the seller. The saddle was in a box and it was wrapped in shipping paper. If the box got tossed around any, I could see where it would break. I can make one if I had a mill, but all I have is a lathe so far. I'll keep looking around, but may have to take joshuaz223 up on his offer. I can make most of it, but will need to have a little more work done. Later on I may have to get some castings made and sell them myself as it seems that everyone that has the Craftsman/Atlas/Dunlap lathe has the cross slide handle broke. One guy was selling three castings on Ebay I believe for something like $175. For that kind of money, I'd try to make handles all day long

You might try Reid supply. If anyone has a generic handle that would work, I would expect it would be available from Reid.

I will second Reid Supply for stuff like that. Order a print catalog and keep it in your shop. It is a great reference.

I had the same problem with the ball part that has the handle in it broke off.
Fix
The handle is pressed into the ball. Clamp the ball in a vise and drill a small hole on the back side of the ball. Take a punch and knock the handle out

Take the handle off the lathe and drill a hole in the other ball on the handle...use the broken off one as a guide as to what size hole to drill.

Tap the handle piece into the handle and reinstall on the lathe

Now get a piece of aluminum and machine a new handle. Polish the aluminum, no need for plating

Waking this dead thread up.

kevin54 - did you ever source the cross slide crank handle (part number L2-61 for my Craftsman 101.27440). I had a sheet of drywall fall over in the garage and it hit the handle and snapped off the ball with the handle still attached.
