I've been using a Clarke for about a dozen years. It's cheap, but it's tough!

Yes, that's the one. They actually had it cheaper than Walmart which on most things is not the case. In one of the posts above one of the guys said 40$, not sure if some stores carry 2 models but hasn't been priced that hi. Its got 3 things going for it, cheap, good power and super long life.
I bought the Black & Decker one from Kmart for $25 and it does its job.

somebody mentioned the c-man pro. if i am correct the older c-man pro, the older black and decker professional and the older dewalt and some of the older snap-on are the same grinder. a basic 4.5 inch grinder with a paddle switch. i have b and d and dewalt versions of them and if you can find them pick them up. they are rock solid.

I think my old Snap-On is a Black+Decker / Dewalt and it is over 20 years old and still going!

I had a dewalt (made in china) that lasted about 3-4 years. Eventually it ate through the ring and pinion gears. So I replaced those myself by pressing them out and putting in new ones for 20 bucks, replaced the carbon brushes while I was at it. Then I removed a cast iron bath tub out of my house, and the grinder overheated trying to cut that up, started smoking.

So I've just purchased a Metabo and a Fein, they're in the mail. We'll see how Germany's finest compete.

I had a lot of problem with DeWalt and the old industrial B&D. I don't recall ever putting a set of gears out but brushed, smokes the thing and not to be repaired. We tried some other stuff till we stumbled on the Walmart version, problems went away, 1 cheap grinder outlast 5 others and I do not exaggerate with this.
In an attempt to cheap a couple things they made it better, namely the cord and brushes. I like a paddle better but got used to the side, it was a small trade off to have one that kept working.
We were brushing units yearly if we caught it in time, 5 yrs on POS and when a switch went south we looked it over, brushes still better than 50%, I sidelined it but tempted to fix a switch.

I'm the one that mentioned it and it has been a great grinder as I'm quite happy with it. I just doubt that I would get the same perfromance from a newer one.

As I mentioned above, TSC has the Dewalt (D28402W 10 amp)clearanced for $69.99 which is cheaper than HD at $89. I made the trip to HD and they price matched plus 10%, which took it down to about $63 plus tax.

I've had a DeWalt D28110 that been going strong for several years, looks like the one Eric/NUTTSGT has but 7A. Be sure to get one with the switch you like. Mine has a slide & rock on switch though sometimes I wish it was a paddle switch.

You're gonna love it. I ended up buying 4 or 5 Metabos in the last 2 years.

I've said it before on here, but I really like having the small Makitas as well for more detailed work that requires one-handed use. The Metabos are bigger and heavier, which is fine, but they both have their place. I also have Milwaukee and DeWalt. Combo of Germany, Japan, USA, and one Milwaukee China.

I have Makita 4" & 4 1/2", Dewalt 4 1/2", & 3 three Harbor Freight paddle switch 4 1/2". I bought the 3 from H/F for what I paid for the Dewalt. Guys on Pirate4x4.com raved about the H/F and I agree. My opinion is if you cant get a Metabo, just buy the $30 paddle switch H/F.

Wouldnt say rock solid. One of my best friends owns a steel shop and he subbed me out for 6 months. 7 of these went from new in the box to in the garbage in that time alone. Run way to hot and cook them selves. Granted they get extended use in that environment. The cheapo ryobis and the Bosch's at the shop cost half as much and hung on throughout.

Went down to my local Harbor Freight...:3gears:

Got the angle grinder and the accessory kit...

For less than $ 25.00!!!:eyecrazy:

Not too shabby!!!

And, it works...

Not repairable---but---replaceable!!!

For an old DIY'er like YRHMBLSRVNT---It'll do...:D:rocker:

I also had problems with the DW402. Very comfy to use but didn't last. We had brush problems. It was disappointing, the feel to it is as good as any and I like the paddle. It will probably be just fine, we used them on the bench in a fab shop.
As a side note we did have a problem with a BD. It had a far amount of use and needs brushes. I am super tempted to find some, one hates to fix a 20$ grinder but I guess its no worse than fixing one cost 100.
The 402 above looks a little different, maybe they redesigned it.

I have a 25 year old Bosch and recently picked up a Skil on sale. Yes, GJ told me I needed more than one angle grinder for the once a year I strip and repaint one of my trailers.

My recommendation is to go on cpooutlets.com, and filter 4 1/2" and 4.5" angle grinders, 4 stars and up. I see a bunch of good brands for less than $100. You can certainly get two for $100 if you don't mind refurbs.

Bosch, dewalt, makita, Milwaukee. Your choice...

Milwaukee is the best I've used.

They Dewalts are decent but not anything great and they get hot really fast.

I was a millwright, now retired. Hilti metabo are both good. I have 4 or five right angle grinders. I have a Milwaukee with a removeable cord. Most of the problems I had with tools like this had to do with the cords. And, I like being able to separate them when I store them. I really like the removable cord idea. All tools should have them.

Metabo or nothing. All we use in our factory. I am sure my two (one six inch for cutting wheels) and 4.5 inch for flap disks get more punishment in a day than a weekend warrior will dish out in a year.

I have a DW402K, which I think has been discontinued. It had the more angular gearbox as opposed to the rounded one. I've used it for grinding, cutting rebar, cutting concrete, sharpening blades, no issues. I got it maybe 9 years ago?

I've got both the 7amp side switch milwaukee and the big 11amp paddle switch milwaukee and they are outstanding. Any grinder that can survive the punishment of grinding my entire two car garage concrete floor without a bit of slow down is a winner in my book.

And whatever you do, make sure to respect that angle grinder. IMO they're in the top three most dangerous tools in the average garage. I've seen cutoff wheels grenade sending pieces at about 170mph in all directions, even right through a welding glove. Go check out some of the safety threads on weldingweb to see what i'm talking about.
