Need a new Jack

I really need to get myself a new jack. Old one is over 15yrs old, is bent and leaks .

I was strongly considering Napa's NLE 791-6420, which is their (import) version of the old Hein Werners. Cost is around $295 in the flyer. I really want the original HW, but at $500+tax+ $100 shipping, its not going to happen.

Generally I try to buy made in NA tools, but I understand the 6420 is a ShinnFu (stand to be corrected) , so quality should be "almost" as high as their HW jack. Most of the tire shops in the area are using the 6420 so its a quality unit.

However the local Napa just got a shipment of the new Carslile 791-6440. List on that jack is $500 :rocker: they say. Special price was $390, but the guy I usually deal with could drop that to $350.

It looks an awful lot like the new Snapon FJ200 with a different handle, pad and front wheels plus a higher "3.5" ton rating. The Snappy Fj200 sells for what $600?? in the states, the Bluepoint YA1707 (HW clone) is over $500 here and I have no idea what the FJ would be locally, but Id imagine more than the YA.

Who is the OEM for the Carslile 6440? And is it a "deal" at $350 vs the older 6420 design? Low lift height isnt a criteria for me. A "3.5" ton jack would be a benefit.

Budgetwise Id like to keep it in the $200-300 range, but would spring the extra $50 if it was worth it. To replace my current Chinese Princess Auto 3 ton would be over $200 anyways, so a little more for a lot better is OK in my book, and Ive been pretty happy with my other NLE stuff like their jack stands.

These look like good choices. As an amateur, I use two very old floor jacks, 2 and 4 ton, and have not had to replace or rebuild them.

I think that if I needed a new one I would go to a certain local tire place that gives jacks very hard use, and see what they use.

I have the Hein Werner HW93642 for 8 years now and so far it's worked great. I use it maybe once every 3 months sometimes 6 months to change oil but so far it's been used every month. I just changed the jack oil and re-greased the zerk fittings. Though owned by Shinn Fu USA, a Taiwan based company, it's assembled in the USA with US and global components. According to another GJ post, someone posted a email response from Shinn Fu regarding parts made in the USA and only the handle and casters are foreign, probably made in Taiwan, not china and the rest are made in USA.

Between the two Napa jacks, the NLE 791-6420 (NW clone) and the Carslile 791-6440, What one is the better made jack?

I've got an old 3 ton craftsman I've had probably 15 years, never had a problem with it. I'll look at it tomorrow and see where it's from. I would like to have some really good jack stands but they can get expensive. My old craftsman stands work fine but when you're laying under a pickup better is always good.

Here :) For just 5 bucks more :)

Nice jack.

But a heck of a lot more than an extra $5 with our dollar so far in the crapper. $355USD is about $495CAD, then add shipping and duty.

Carquest is supposed to sell Compac here so Ill check with them, but I expect that jack to be close to $650 or more here.

To answer my own post, I got Comapc canadian pricing for the 2t and 3t jacks from Carquest. The 2t is $614 and the 3t is 719 both plus 15% tax. Too rich for my blood, $719+tax is halfway towards a used lift.

Just to stir the pot, check with some of the classic jack guys here to see if anybody has an old long frame jack like a blackhawk for sale. I wouldn't trade mine for any new one. Better reach, lifts faster then the new "quick lifts" plus looks cool. I had a 3 1/2 ton Matco which is the same as any good import. My old blackhawk is so much better. As far as the jacks you posted, OEM is Shin Fu. They make almost all floor jacks. They also own Hein Warner. Very few jacks are not made by them.

I am on my second 3 ton craftsman jack, I purchased the first one in 1980, and it gave up on me in 2000, I called it my Y2K problem, most likely was my own fault, left a big motor home jacked up out in 100+ temp for over a week, and the seal failed and leaked down. I just went down and purchased another one. Craftsman also gives you a parts break down for their jacks, or they did last time I purchased one.

I too would say AC Hydraulics based on mine. However, it is outside your price range.

Beyond that, I'd be picking up a vintage unit, and rebuilding. I wouldn't touch a Chinese jack again. I've just had one too many frustrating experiences with them.

I had a 200$ craftsman aluminum racing jack I loved. Broke after a few years and leaked everywhere. If I can get the part it is 200$. Never again will I buy a jack I can't get a rebuild kit for. I had the people I got my jack from throw in a rebuild kit so I have it in case I ever need it and won't be in a jam. Sorry I missed the price issue. I get pissed when I spend a lot of money on china **** that can't be repaired.

Just to close out this thread and clarify what I did, I went with the Napa NLE 791-6420. My Napa guy cut me a pretty sweet deal on one. It should be in tomorrow.

I chose the old school design mostly because its been around "forever" which hopefully will mean parts should be around "forever" too. So far Ive had excellent service from the imported NLE gear I got. Its well constructed for an import IMHO and it meets ASME lifting standards.

The AC and Compac's are VERY nice jacks by the looks of it, but far too much money up here for me. AC is available, but distribution is quite limited as well.
