Need help identifying this tool/part?

Hi All,
Just joined and this is my first post and not sure I am in the right place! If not I apologize!
I am asking for help to identify this tool/part in the photo! It is heavy.

Might be a spindle puller. Are there three thread sizes inside?

No, about 3/4” of fine threads at large opening.
Note the removable stud has a sharp point that goes inside the cylinder!

If I owned it, i would use that and a vise for rescuing the fluids from my aerosol cans that held fluid still but no gas.

Might build one.

No clue what it really is.

It has a pretty heavy weld around the nut where the pointed bolt screws into so what ever it screws into must be under some high pressure!

I think it must be for something else since the bolts pointed end must be for piercing something?

Also an internet search shows the motorcycle flywheel puller has threads on the outside and these threads are on the inside?

Keeps it centered on the shaft which has a hole in the end.

my vote as well. small engine hub puller, pulley/clutch puller for large AC unit, etc. I have a dozen or so for various things and some are internally threaded, some externally, some have both. always fine thread like that.

look for a part #, it may be for something like a diesel truck, construction equipment, or who knows.

I picked one up for a buck at the flea market just because it said snap-on, ran the #'s and it was a GM ac clutch puller...which I actually needed...bonus!

In machining shafts a lot of them are "turned between centers'. So before a machining process on the shaft is started it is center drilled. So google center drill and turning between centers.

As stated above most cam shafts, crank shafts, transmission main and lay shafts etc are made on a lathe or dedicated grinding machine by turning the shaft between centers. To make the shafts center, a tapered hole is drilled into each end so the shaft centers itself on these machines during the grinding process. That way all the areas machined on the shaft are on the same center. Gears located on these shafts once in the engines, transmissions etc. are an interference fit so there is absolutely no play as these components must spin at high rates of speed and bear tremendous loads. The pointed screws locate in these center drilled shafts so the threads in the large outer piece are also kept centered during removal of these gears during rebuilding or repair work. Because of the interference fit pullers must be very strong to remove these components.

Thank you all for your detailed explanations and photos. Since there are no markings on the tool I was hoping to identify its particular use so I could sell it. However there are apparently to many uses and styles to nail it down to its particular use.

I concur. This strongly reminds me of a 4wd Chevy front spindle puller, if it has 5/8 fine thread for a slide hammer. However, none of mine have the little screw included.
