29" deep? Looks like a KRL1001B. Also, mine has a tag inside on the bottom that you can see with the drawers out, besides the usual tag on the back.

Yes it's 29" deep, from what I have seen it does appear to be a KRL1001B, when I got the box, the lock for it was removed (it broke years ago and was never replaced). I would like to get a new one, does snap on still sell these locks? I need the entire thing.

they do still sell the lock for 25.25$, free shipping:

https://store.snapon.com/Lock-Assemblies-Lock-Assembly-Tubular-One-Lock-Two-Keys--P653027.aspx

if you replace the "1" in the part number with 2-7, you can get multi lock sets keyed alike.

I need the bar that runs to the back of the box and any parts with it, I only have the pieces that fall into place to lock the box. I have them safety wired up so I can open the drawers. If I take the wire off and close the doors they are locked with no way to open it.

Is that the traditional red, or is it cranberry?

I like the cranberry red.

It is cranberry red, I actually didn't like it at first but I have a dark grey craftsman box and paired together they look really good.

happened to a guy I know, thankfully it was a new to him box and still empty, we had to turn it upside down to get it open lol. easier than trying to slide something in and lifting the locking mechanism since it was completely empty at the time.

We used a borescope and some fabricated tools to get it open, all in it took three people several hours. Oceans Eleven we are not. haha

if you call snapon, they will spend the time with you on the phone to get you the parts you need.

people complain about the price, but they maintain parts for 40 year old tool boxes, and are more than happy to take the time to help you get what you need.

now, part of it is that they are smart. the lock set from a 1970's box is interchangeable with a brand new box, but still . . . . . .

I think I'll have to do that, I've been going through the catalog but honestly I have no idea how much of the lock system has been removed. It looks like there is nothing left other than the slides that drop down in the back.

Ask SnapOn if they can e-mail You a parts diagram of the locking mechanism. Then you can check mark the parts needed; and e-mail it back.

I have a KRL1001 just like yours only in yellow and black. Couple years ago my top drawer could be emptied and removed fairly easily but now thanks to GJ, it is very full. If you are unable to figure the parts you need though, let me know and I could probably get you some pics of the mechanism from the lock to the back of the box.

Ok, so I pulled out the top drawer to get a better look at the locking system, mainly to see whats left. Here are some pictures, other than the tumbler lock, what else do I need to purchase from Snap on?

Any ideas?
I'll see how good of a pic I can get when i get home tonight. I think I can just open the top drawer all the way up and take out the two of the 2" drawers below and just stick my phone in there. BTW, I can't tell anything from your pics. They are too blurry. Chris.

I have a very similar box to that, I love it. Mine is a KRL1001. I'd try to help on the lock, but mine has the top drawer full of sockets. Would take an hour to take them out and put them all back in the right places. I'd second calling Snap-on and see if they can send you a schematic.

Okay Wreckster, here you go. Like I said it's very hard to tell in your pics but now that I've looked at mine it looks like you are only missing the rod that goes from the lock to the back. I was able to just remove the two top 2" drawers, open the full width drawer and duck under there to get these for ya.

This is looking up @ lock.

That is a huge help! I am waiting for snap on to email me back about getting the rod assembly. The trouble is that these boxes went out of production 17 years ago so parts may not still be available. Thank you!

The 54" wide, 29" deep KRL box is alive and well. The KRL1022 is the current box that is the same size as our KRL1001. The only difference is that the newer model has a 5" and 3" full width drawer instead of one 4". Snap-on did this years ago to accommodate taller sockets in the top drawer and give users a 2nd full width drawer commonly used for wrenches. The locking mechanism should be identical. Chris.

Chris,
I think you deserve some kind of award for the best cell phone pics ever.
Thanks. My new S7 deserves the credit. My wife and I each got one on BOGO over the Black Friday weekend. My M18 Led light provided a little better light in there as well.

I tally my **** cell phone pics up to an outdated iPhone 6s. I will look in to the KRL 1022. Also what is the preferred top to everyone's toolbox? I was thinking of making a wooden top and staining it a dark grey.

Wreckster that idea sounds sweet. I've always liked the SO black steel tops with the bedliner coating but have refrained from adding one because the KRL1001 is already so tall. I'm 6 foot but I wouldn't want the box taller. Your idea of a homemade wood top is interesting because you could make it alot thinner than a butcher block top and I've always dug gray stained wood. Definitely keep us posted if you decide to make your own top.
