So I was given this Baldor grinder for free because it didn't work. I though if I can't fix it I could part it out to help save another grinder.
When I plug get it in it just hummed. So I spun the wheels and plugged it in and still just hummed.
Looked in the bottom and I see a loose wire. I don't know where it goes so I touched it to where one of the other field leads was connected. Now it runs slow but it runs.
I suspect there should be a run capacitor between the legs but am not sure. Does anyone know where to get a wiring diagram or does someone have a grinder like this that they could tell me how it should be wired?

Based on my experience Baldor grinders only use a full time run capacitor in the start winding. (no centrifical or relay based starting circuit).

Just a guess:
-run winding to line voltage via switch
-start winding in series with run cap, one leg to common and the other to line.

I have an old 1/2 HP Baldor base laying around. Just PM me and I can probably get the value of the run capacitance if you need it. I can't confirm the wiring because the stator is burnt up.

It's probably pretty close to this but one direction/one speed (go to page 10):

I have a Baldor grinder that is about the same vintage as your grinder. Mine was made in 1948 and does have a run capacitor (no start cap). It's 4 microfarad, 440 volt.

Another option would be to take it to a shop that rewinds motors. They should have the capacitor and would know how it's wired.

Definitely needs a capacitor, likely a run capacitor. Since it is a 2.5 amp motor you could protect the windings by using a slow blow 5.0 to 7.5 amp fuse while you experiment with wiring the capacitor to the motor leads to maximize speed/power. And once you have it running you could continue to protect the motor windings with that fuse.

There's one motor shop remaining in this good-sized metro area and it's industrial motors only. They have a $75 bench charge to make sure guys like us don't waste their time with our piddly old ****.

Your results may differ.

That's a good idea, sort of.
There is a motor shop in Fresno that the old guy has been helpful to me in the past. Might see if he is still there.

Thanks

Unearthed this old thread to thank the contributors for providing the information to repair a 1/2 HP 1800 RPM Baldor grinder I picked up at the ReStore so dirt cheap I could not resist it, tried to talk myself out of it since already had 8 grinders & really do not need another but was so cheap 'cuz it did not run right, BTW, it was $8.66 including tax. I could not find a wiring diagram on ABB/Baldors website, but did find a link here for one.
