I bought a used (and broken) 60 gallon craftsman "professional" off craigslist a couple years back.
It's got a motor and compressor built together (oilless). I spent some serious time tracking down hard to find rings for it and finally got it running after a while.
It's served me well for a while now, but the more time I spend on GJ, the more air tools I acquire and this compressor isn't quite cutting it anymore.
I was wondering through HF one day and noticed a 145 psi 5 hp 2 stage compressor pump on the clearance rack. Turns out someone mis marked it as the smaller pump HF sells so I got it for about $80 out the door.
I've been hanging onto it waiting for the right time to do something with it.
I'm thinking of removing the oilless pump and compressor off the craftsman and mounting up the larger 3 stage pump with a new 5hp motor.
The mounting plate on the craftsman is quite small as the original configuration didn't need a large plate.
Anyone see anything wrong with this plan?
I will be welding on the plate to make it larger, but not welding on the tank at all.
I'm pretty green when it comes to air compressors so I'm not sure if I'll need a larger unloaded, or anything else.
I fully expect to have custom hoses made to go from the compressor to the tank.
When you get up to larger compressors, I'd the motor what drives the specs on an unloaded?
Orignonal pressure reliefe valve should be able to stay.
Below is a picture of a compressor similar to the one I have, although I think the one I have currently is 2 hp.
And this is the new pump.
