Need input on upgrading compressor

I bought a used (and broken) 60 gallon craftsman "professional" off craigslist a couple years back.
It's got a motor and compressor built together (oilless). I spent some serious time tracking down hard to find rings for it and finally got it running after a while.
It's served me well for a while now, but the more time I spend on GJ, the more air tools I acquire and this compressor isn't quite cutting it anymore.

I was wondering through HF one day and noticed a 145 psi 5 hp 2 stage compressor pump on the clearance rack. Turns out someone mis marked it as the smaller pump HF sells so I got it for about $80 out the door.
I've been hanging onto it waiting for the right time to do something with it.

I'm thinking of removing the oilless pump and compressor off the craftsman and mounting up the larger 3 stage pump with a new 5hp motor.
The mounting plate on the craftsman is quite small as the original configuration didn't need a large plate.

Anyone see anything wrong with this plan?
I will be welding on the plate to make it larger, but not welding on the tank at all.
I'm pretty green when it comes to air compressors so I'm not sure if I'll need a larger unloaded, or anything else.
I fully expect to have custom hoses made to go from the compressor to the tank.
When you get up to larger compressors, I'd the motor what drives the specs on an unloaded?
Orignonal pressure reliefe valve should be able to stay.

Below is a picture of a compressor similar to the one I have, although I think the one I have currently is 2 hp.

And this is the new pump.

It’s doable, but I don’t think its worth all the time and effort. Even though you got a good deal on the pump, it’s still a single stage unit. By the time you get a true 5hp motor, the correct pulley, belts, a mag starter, all the electrical, air lines, steel for fabricating a new skid and a belt guard if you so chose, the end result is still a single stage compressor for lots of $ and man-hours. But, if you’re looking for a project……..

Better to find a used complete single phase 5hp 2 stage compressor all ready to go.

Either way, have fun and good luck!

Sounds like a good use for the parts you have. Start slow, watch for a 5Hp "special" motor in 220 volt single phase, in craigs or other. Actually this 5Hp special is not a terribly expensive motor brand new, so up to you. Another idea would be to watch Craigs list or similar for a complete compressor assembly with motor and tank, and with a compressor worn out or junk. You can use a second tank in a system, for even better water separation. Or sell your old oilless one, if you find a complete unit with bad compressor that you can install your new compressor pump onto. Lots of options. Keep searching, it will come to you if you are patient.
