Different, Reed started in 1896 and was always Reed. The Ridge tool company I believe believe became Ridgid, and for their vises had ties to other company over the years.

Wrench guy who has an real nice 8" and couple of others can give you better history of the two, but they were independent companies.

Going to try and have swivel base welded until I find replacement "vises"
Got this vise as a gift in the 80's

Hey Alan C.

Thanks for the tip! I did as suggested and drilled second hole -- now mounted without swivel base. Surprised how soft the CI was to drill.

this could possibly be a good one in your area - definitely needs a bead blast, but that keeps the price down! - you need to inspect in person for cracks or welds and ask seller for accurate weight and jaw width.

many old Craftsman's were built in Cleveland by Columbian

not saying it is good, I am saying needs investigation unless someone here recognizes it - could even possibly be imported, hard to tell, need to contact seller and get more info.

Sold an OMC carb to a gentleman on Saturday (CL) and during our discussion I asked if he would have an old vise for sale, He called me back and he has a Reed 104.
I haven't seen any pics yet but is it true most older Reeds do not have replaceable Jaws?

Scooternut, nice knives!

TIA!

Dan: some Reed vises have replaceable jaws, but most of the 4 inch ones i have owned or seen don't have replaceable ones. a Reed 104 is a good vise if it's in great shape so post a few pictures and let us know how much he's asking. here's a few of the Reed 104's I own or have owned or seen.

good luck

Reed is an awesome vise, so are many other old USA vises:

some names for OP to look for in old USA vises: Prentiss, Reed, Charles Parker, Yost, Morgan, Wilton bullet, Rock Island, Columbian, Athol (Starrett), Record (British made), Ridgid, Monarch (Prentiss), Littlestown, Hollands, American Scale, Bulldog (Prentiss), some of the old Craftsman vises, especially those built by Columbian.

Guys,

Picked up a REED 104 Today !! :)

Guy that had the vise worked for PPG for 30+ years and when they updated the Maintenence dept he got this vise. Said he doesn't remember using it much or at all.
When I got it home I could only open the jaws about 1" but a little WD 40 and it now fully opens using 1 finger.

Can't believe home much heavier it is than my cheapo 3.5 China vise that I broke!!
Would the stamp of 1277 be the month and year of manu???
:)

Dan: you Reed 104 looks like a great vise. i only noticed a little missing part of the jaw on the dynamic which shouldn't affect the use much. unless it's a bigger chunk missing or if it's cracked.

I agree that is an awesome vise and doesn't compare to the junk you can buy new for the same price. it sounds like you got a great story with the vise too and that's always nice.

You did well there Danstead. Jaws on the Reed look pristine, you'll have a lifetime of use.

Now inquiring minds want to know how much for your find ??

Thank you!!

Being a vise rookie, I 'm not sure why the bottom of both sides of the Dynamic jaw is rounded?

Also, the jaws appear "t" shaped. Do you think these are pins that hold them in place?

Thanks Drivesitfar!

Thanks CNGSaves,

Kind of a bundle deal, got both vises and about 8 different clamps for $100.00

Not sure how old the Craftsman wood vise is but seems very heavy.

There was a Wilton 1765 for sale very close to me for $165.00 but wanted the Reed to start!

Dan: i can't say I've seen the bottoms of a removable jaw rounded like that. I also can't recall pins holding the jaws on Reed vises. that is more of a Parker type of pin. i'll defer to the guys that might know a bit more about your Reed's jaw and pins.

still nice looking Reed and your Wilton wood vise looks like a keeper too.

This might sound crazy but I drove home feeling like a kid at Christmas!!

Now I need to beef up my work bench to support the Reed!

:) All Good!

Here's a catalog page showing the jaws and pins. The rounded jaw is odd. Maybe a previous owner did it for a specific purpose. Also the N stamped after the 104 means it came without a swivel. An S would be for the swivel version. Most, it seems, were never marked.

Wow, you scored on 2 keepers in one trip !! The Craftsman wood vise will come in handy for thousand uses.

Strange about the rounded jaw on vise, but doesn't affect function of vise in significant way. Pins could be removed if you wanted to get new jaws.

Good luck re-furbishing vise and setting up a sturdy bench. Nice score.

Sounds like you did very well on price there Dan. :) With regard that rounded insert, you'll likely find he was working on some objects which were awkward for clearance against the top of the slide or suchlike. Occasionally you can drop across certain pieces which don't clamp well in a vice due to their shape, (I seem to be like a magnet for pieces like that. In a standard vice, you can just never get really secure mounting and a good working position on some things). If it's something he was working on frequently, he likely modified that insert to improve clearance for that specific type of piece.
