Need quieter compressor

I'm on the hunt for a quiter air compressor.. Currently have a 30 gallon Craftsman, oil less. Works great, no problems for 10 years... Loud as ****

Looking at a used Delivlbiss Pro 4000 two stage 6.5, 80gal... Some have posted that it's just as loud and some say it's much quiter.

Other compressors if looked at:
-IR 2 stage 60gal, 240v
-C-Aire 5hp, 60gal
-Curtis 5hp, 80gal
-Craftsman Pro 60gall 2 stage

Most are off Craigslist in the $500 price range

The key is the pump RPM. Cheaper compressors turn very fast, and make a racket. I had an old Wayne that turned at 600 RPM's, and sounded like the African Queen- a pleasant chug-chug-chug rather than a screaming racket.

These are probably all about the same with the biggest difference being the intake muffler /filter assembly. You can always install your own intake muffler to help quiet things down.

I personally would like a quieter compressor, not a quiter, I'd rather it not quit on me

and yes, you want an oiled pump, belt drive, slow pump speed

Oil-less compressors are noisy and somehow, IMHO, the noise is more irritating than an oiled, belt drive, slow speed compressor.

A friend of mine who works in his small shop 8-12 hours/day put a car muffler -- almost any muffler will work -- on the intake of his compressor and got a significant reduction in noise.

Watch the comparison video on noise level. There are also plenty of youtube vids on them.
Everything else you listed is in a whole different ballpark than your little Craftsman. By all means go with one of those if you need much more air.

I think I have the same craftsman oil less compressor or something similar and yes, it's loud, it ***** but I've also had it for 15 years and it's worked great. I built a PVC muffler for the intake a year ago and that was just a waste of time. The muffler had little to no change in noise.

Have you looked into the Eastwood scroll? It was posted on a thread on weldingweb. It looks awesome. It's a bit higher than your $500 options, it's priced at $1200 but new, not used.

Someone posted it here the other day as well. It looks like a pretty nice unit, but the price will be an issue for many.

Cast something like this. Line with 6 lb rockwool or Tractor Supply rubber stall mats. Leave top and bottom air vents.

The Curtis I've seen are 1750 rpm motors. Quiet. Nice.

I've been pretty happy with my 2HP California Air Tool compressor. MUCH quieter than my old 5hp Craftsman oil lubed twin cylinder. These run much slower with a larger piston and high torque motor. So far its been a great compressor and keeps up with my tire machine, lift jacks and other tools just fine. A 2HP aluminum tank version is still under $300.

I think that Eastwood Scroll is a winner. Leaning that direction.

If you want to upgrade comp for other reasons, not only noise, then fine.

If you are satisfied w your exist one, except just noise, consider "quieting" it w barriers, sound absorbing, or moving it, or combo of methods.... and spend the $ on other tools.

I have considered leaving my current compressor in my small garage, running 3/4 PEX 135 feet to the shop, remote on/off switch, remote air take in shop... Just a lot more a lot more tubing, wires, switches to run when I can buy a compressor and park it in the shop.

I have the same air compressor, I built a vented box for it and put it outside. I am also looking for a bigger compressor but I will still install it outside the shop. Just the space it saves is worth it.
