Need some HD negotiating advice

So I want another tool box as part of organizing and consolidating a lot of accumulated tools, etc.

I am a DIY, not a professional wrench, so I do not need to spend the money for used Snap On, Mac, Matco, etc. I have watched CL, FM, OU, etc for a while within maybe 2 hours. It is a high cost area and I did not find anything that seemed like a deal.
I have looked at a lot of different boxes. I have gravitated toward the HF US General 44, the Craftsman 3000 (I have one which I like) and similar.

HD has the "iindustrial" boxes, which are heavier duty.

I am looking at the 52: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-H...inet-Set-in-Matte-Black-H52CH6TR9HD/302962883

These were $898 before the tariffs got going in the spring, now $998. Before the tariffs early this year there were $150 coupons on both top and bottom and $598 would have bought both, which I think is a pretty good value.

One of my local stores has a floor model which has been there a while which has been marked down to $748.

I can get maybe get a 10% off coupon to bring it down a little more.

I am looking for advice on how to beat them down some more on the price. Do I ask for a manager and try to negotiate? Obviously somebody wanted it gone so they marked it down.

Thanks in advance for strategic advice.

Bruce

Forget about the coupon. You won't be able to combine it with the override. Show up and be ready to take it with you right then. Don't say.....I have to go get my truck etc. Ask for the MOD offer him $500 and see what he says. Be polite, and you would be surprised. Make it seem like the ball is in his court. Go an hour before closing time.

And remember, their floor space is more valuable than the box. They need to make room for all the holiday junk that’s coming in soon.

The reduced tags are part of a built in process at homedepot. Basically they put it in the system and it takes 25% off. Then after about a month it will automatically reduce another 25% they are not supposed to further discount the items once they are in that system you just let it do it's thing. If they take a further markdown on stuff in this system it hits a report that goes to the district manager. They may work with you but if they don't then just wait and hope u catch it when it drops again. They know it is in this automatic reduction system and also know that when it hits 50% off it will fly out the door and so they may not care that you want to buy it NOW. I am pretty sure that the tag has a date printed on it for when it was created, so when it gets close to a month you can check in every day to catch the drop.

i try to find someone and tell them i want to talk about a discount. if they say they can't do it, i ask for someone who can. that will get you a decision maker without having tried to negotiate with someone who can't even approve it.

as mentioned above, be ready to take it immediately.

i make an offer, too. i don't let them throw out the first price. i'd say something like,"i'm interested in buying this. i was wondering if you guys could do any better on it. i was thinking like maybe $**.**." and ask for a good discount but don't be insulting.

then if they say "no" then ask what they are willing to do. and i always stress "i'll buy it right now". that seems to make the biggest difference.

"look, i'll buy it right now. i really want to buy it but i can't do the asking price."

also, i try to make sure the conversation keeps going. the longer you talk to them the more you can wear them down.

I had this same issue dealing with an 80 gal compressor at the local HD. It was sitting at the door with a discounted price tag for a couple months. Walked in asked to talk to the manager. I was very polite and asked was he willing to drop the price a lil more.

He told me to come back a week later and he would drop the price. True to his word a week later I walked in asked him about it. He walked up to the tag and dropped the price to $450’ish. Took over $100 off. Hell of a deal for an 80 gal compressor if u ask me.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

My big pickup is down in the country, sounds like I need to be driving it when I have this discussion so I can say they can load it up now.

I am generally polite and friendly so that part is easy.

Probably go down there ready to deal and it will be gone.

BTW these boxes sold for $728 earlier this year
https://slickdeals.net/f/13029244-hu...src=SiteSearch

That was the deal I was thinking of with the 2 $150 coupons.

Actually $449 + $229 = $678

So my statement:
$598 would have bought both
was incorrect.

I could have sworn the combo was $898 at some point early this year, maybe HD bumped it up for the coupon sale.

Still pretty good boxes in that price range I think.

Thanks

I can assure you there is an MOD (manager on duty) on site at all times. Do you think they let the head cashier count down the safe by herself at the end of the night?

+1. Ready to buy now AND take the box home.

Also, be able to point out scratches and/or dents in the box, so you want to take a look at the box carefully before talking with anyone. Those worth more discount :lol_hitti

Sometimes what's on the tag isn't the lastest markdown. Ask them to scan it , it may be cheaper than you think.

OP is talking about one time display model discounts not a sale. The couple of times I've been interested I've gotten an additional 20% knocked off on the spot so usually around 40% off new in box. They do this fairly regularly with random items as they refresh or move stock.

They'd much rather sell them at a steep discount otherwise they get trashed or sent to a liquidator for pennies on the dollar.
