I need to carry the basic hand tools in my Jeep. I don'twant expensive tools that will get lost in the dirt. I need metric wrenches this week. How are the ACDelco ones at Orileys and the Duralast @ A-Zone? The Duralast look well made and are made in Taiwan.

I do want better quality than the Made in India HF ones

I'm not sure the price and quantity from the stores you mentioned, but I'd say get a set of Gearwrench ratchet wrenches from Advance Auto. They have 7 or 8 piece sets of flex head, reversible and normal ratchet wrenches. The reversible's are $59.99, but with the coupon code TRT30 it knocks $15 off and pay $44.99. Buy online then go down to store and pick them up. I think they are better than the AC Delco's or Duralast's.

Might I also recommend checking your local pawn shops. I have bought many awesome top tier tools for dirt cheap many times. The other day I was looking through a bin that said all contents $1 each. Screwdrivers, sockets, etc. I found two Snap On screwdrivers and a Wright 4" adjustable wrench. Paid $3 and left before he could see the name, but you get my point. My pawn shop is loaded with used SK, Snap On, Proto stuff that isn't brand new, but that's the type of stuff you want for a truck/jeep box. Top tier tools that you don't have to worry about losing or breaking.

I have been wheeling for nearly 20 years and have performed many different trail repairs/jury rigs on my Jeep and the rigs of others.

Never have I lost a tool in the dirt. Put down a towel or tool roll and keep track of your gear.

I have however broken many cheap tools that were unable to stand up to the often "harsh" trailside environment.

A nice old set of SK's or C-Man panel wrenches off eBay will serve your wallet and your needs.

Well, I don't know how urgently you need this metric set or how much you are looking to spend, but I would jump on eBay and buy a set of SK, Proto, Mac, Snappy, or at least Craftsman USA. You can find a decent set for around $50 guaranteed. The majority of my tools I bought on eBay. Here's an example of a set I quickly found. Made in USA and comes with the vinyl pouch to keep them neat and tidy. Make a $40 offer and see what he comes back with. They say you'll meet at $50. Until then, if you even need it, buy one individual wrench from Auto Zone. Good luck

Buy used Craftsman on CL or eBay. You have to know your prices, because some folks want more than retail (or more than "on sale" retail) !

This is how I built my "travel" set.

The one "truck brand" tool that you want to have is a snappy heavy duty (gold) T40 torx bit as any exterior T40's will be as stubborn as hell to work with and will destroy most bits.

so very true...

OP didnt state what year or model of jeep, or a DD or trail rig, so it's really hard to pinpoint certain bit/socket/wrench sizes.

i dont like a bunch of tools banging around in my blazer, tools in the truck are more for an "emergency" on the trail, so i can get back to the trailer where the rest of my tools are at.

it's amazing what you can do with a hammer and a pair of channelocks when you have to...

pic is a friends blazer on 37's, after we winched him back out of the 4 ft deep hole he was in

broken axle shaft, broke both ball joints out of the knuckle, only thing holding the wheel to the truck is the tie rod.

there was no way we'd ever get him off the trail on 3 wheels.

That setup was stolen with my last jeep. I have a similar, more complete set now. I went with craftsman. I added a knipex crescent wench because they are so bad ***

For what your question is the duralast from the zone are decent wrenches. I went to home depot and bought two sets each of the husky wrenches in sae and metrics one set for each car. And the are doing well .

A bit "over the top" for just a "travel" tool box !

uc

Most of it is Craftsman and almost all of it was bought off of eBay for much less than typical retail price. Probably <$200. No room for the BFH !

Yes, it all fits into that plastic hand box at the top of the picture.

On the jeep forums I've seen some really good threads about tool kits in jeeps. No need to carry a bunch of sizes you won't need. Do you take spare parts with you too or just need very basic tools? No need to have everything to change out a water pump if you don't have one with you. I try to keep very basic stuff I the jeep for emergencies. Are you keeping this for daily use or trails?

For a set of wrenches I would go tekton. I have their bigger sets in metric and standard and they are great. Have even used them with a pipe over the end to get to some bolts I didnt have the clearance to get to with a ratchet.
If you have amazon prime they only take 2 or so days.
