my dog got ahold of my welder and im in the process of rebuilding it (yes we have the technology), im about done but my problem is the power cord. i have a three prong cord coming out the back that he chewed in half so i am going to either crimp or solder another new cord onto the existing good, non chewed, cord coming from the welder itself...but with the three prong (110v) setup how should i wire the new one to the old one, i know green is the ground...but what about the white and black, i've stripped a little coating off of the actual power wire coming from the welder and they dont have a white or black but only green. Does it matter what route i go with what wire goes to what as long as green is to green? PLease help guys and i appreciate it

No not splice the cord.

Replace it all the way back to the welder.

As for wiring, if your green is ground, then the black will be hot, and the white neutral.

Real easy to find out for sure though, take the old end, and use an ohm meter from the plug to the ragged cut cord.

What he said!
White is neutral, Black is hot, Green is ground.

ohm meter please explain to me...oh yeah and i HATE electrical work

With an ohm meter you will be able to determine what wires are what in regards to plug prong orientation. This is a test for continuity.

Connect one of the leads from the ohm meter to say, the round ground prong on the plug, then touch the other lead to the raw cord end wires. When you touch the one that is connected to that round ground prong, it will tell you.

All "multi-meters" have the ability to test for ohms (resistance).

im still a little confused, you don't have to have anything plugged into an outlet for a current to be going thru to check for continuity?

If you keep the welder turned on all the time they don't usually get chewed to that extreem:)

Seriously, I know of no polarity issue for the black and white leads but if you are splicing to gain more reach as opposed to replacing the stock cordage I'd suggest you gain the extra length on the secondary leads not the input side. At most you need to turn up the amperage some to account for it but voltage drop on the feed side may cause premature failure of the cooling fan motor and maybe a wire feed motor & controller if so equipped.

im splicing the wire and adding to what the dog chewed off, not to gain length on the power cord but just to actually have a power cord lol

ummm...the dog is no longer in my possession, i gave him to a guy and his wife. Gunner (the dog) is a yellow lab with SERIOUS seperation anxiety (i.e. interior on my 62' mercury gone, hole in kitchen drywall, shed doors, hole in garage drywall, welder, welding helmet, chair, bedroom door, bedroom carpet, cage x3, light switches) but he is with two of the greatest animals lovers you could ask for and we still keep in touch so i know he is in good care...oh yeah and the little **** hasn't touched ONE FREAKIN' thing at his new owners' house...go figure

i tried taking the extra step and replacing the whole thing last night but the one panel doesn't wanna come off for some reason and the power chord has some special grommet from the casing that you need a specific tool to open

Stress relief gromets can be tuff to get out sometimes but usually a pair of plyers squeezed in just the right place allows you to push the gromet and cord out of the hole from the inside.

i'll try again and see what i can come up with, i would rather go the route of replacing the whole thing, much cleaner looking and just better all around
