I have a couple of pieces of 8" ID steel pipe. Together they are 14' long. I need to weld them together into one pipe. The problem is all ends were poorly torch cut and are extremely uneven. I have no square end to measure off of.

How do I get square ends that I that I can weld up make one straight pipe?

I thought of rigging up rollers on my saw horses and rolling the pipe while holding my torch stationary. It just seems like there should be a simpler way.

Any suggestions?

Wrap a piece of paper around the pipe and align the edges.
Draw the line and cut or grind to that line.
They will now be square

Aligh and start welding

You can use a framing square to find the lowest end of the cut, then use tape to run a line around the pipe. Then all you have to do is work the excess off with whatever tools you have.

Rsanter nailed it. I knew there should be an easy way. It was never a question of how to cut it, torches and grinders I got. The problem was getting a square line with no straight reference point.

The wrap around tool link from Richard D is pretty cool. If I did a lot of this type of work I would own one. Thanks for the offer to help but the 1000 mile drive one way would be a bummer. I'm in central West Virginia so kinda a long haul for you.

This is going to be an outside chimney for a garage. We will be hooking a woodstove to it.

Just make sure you do a wall thimble on it. If you cant find one, making one wouldn't be that bad.

go to an art supply store but the heaviest piece of poster board that thet sell , cut it into a nice straight 6" wide strip ,wrap it around and align the edges so they are all parallel to each other, mark it and cut it
