Count me in as subscribed!!!!

Looking forward to the build. You're lucky you could find another crew so fast. Around my area, all they want to do is slam a few beers and tell you how big of a job it is. So anymore, I go 20 miles north of me to hire anyone.

I've had that crew before...one concrete crew and one drywall crew....The drywall crew got fired by me as well. I'll save that story till when I get to the drywall phase. But, that only makes two crews that I had to let go in the past 10 years. Drinking after the job is fine...during and throughout the workday..no way.

This thread will slow in the next two weeks as I have to travel out of town on busness. Hopefully mid december will be clear enough to frame. Have my material bid out with 3 suppliers...should wrap that up soon. Believe I'll meet with my carpenter to discuss mmy lumber dimention choices so I can pull his ideas. We've worked together on the house 6 years ago...I don't anticipate any issues.

So now I'm planning my materials list and I'm thinking on how the "new work" will connect to the existing. I'm going to try to be deliberate with these connections and make the best reasonable tie in that presents itself first (I don't want to tear to much apart to make a tie-in but I want the tie-in I go with to perform).

I'm no draftsman...I skipped that block of study and went straight to 3 years of woodworking...so hopefully the board will chime in on what I'm thinking..

fig a. Connection between corner of new shop space and patio header.
b_071903.jpg

fig b. Splitting the 2 x 12 header on the PT 6 x 6 post (where required). Splits to be located on the outside and centered on 6 x 6 PT post where able. Header will be bolted through the 6 x 6 PT post laps. For instances where I fly past the post with a 2 x 12 overlap by 2' and nail off scarf to connect the two.
b_071916.jpg

fig c. This depicts my planned layout for the 2 x 12 header with the scarfs.
b_071929.jpg

fig d. This is the connection between the old north wall and the north extention wall...I have not got this one figured out. There will be some cutting back required to get this one right. I'll add a few jack studs to let the bottom 2 x 4 of the top plate rest on..unsure how I'll cut back for the top plate 2 x 4. And...I may not worry about going back on the sole plate.. ANY IDEAS???

Thanks in advance for weighing in.

Yep, blame it on the blade, tell everybody they rented you a tapered blade. :lol_hitti

;) Yea, I'm not going to go out of my way to point it out to everybody but I believe it'll hide ok...like I said...I decided to let it drift a course correction of 1 1/2" would have been really noticeable. Now a person would have to measure it to really know.

I hope the spacing on my cuts will provide the relief...guess only time will tell...can't say the base was tamped down enough...I was not there that day...and it was the initial team that did the work.

If you fill the interior cuts after the building is up, it'll hide them further.

It's kinda hard to tell how to do the tie in without being there to see where it's getting tied in, atleast for me, I don't do that stuff all the time. The one thing that I wouldn't do is forgo the sole (sill) plate. It's going to help hold all those studs together at the bottom IMHO.

NUTTSGT: Yep c is blurry...not that important. Just showing how I was going to stagger the joints for the header. I'll use it for mat planning and layout.

As for the joints...exactly what I was thinking. If i can find some 1/4" foam tube....I'll do the foam and then some self leveling elastic caulk. I saw some used on youtube reciently.

For the sole plate...yea....your right...then I'm not second guessing myself. I also thought of cutting back on the old shops exterior OSB for a better connection...that's alot of work too. I have hardie plank lap siding that I'll have to stagger cut-back on when I do the siding later. Fun stuff! I do love it though. Thanks for the pointers.

NUTTSGT.....That is the company video that I watched on youtube the otherday....is the product the color grey by chance? I just finished spraying weather proofing Tompsons on it ran out with only a little to go...isn't that always the way? Also knocked down some of the rough edges and took the 4" masonary wheel around a few jbolts so the bottom plate can set flat on the seal seal foam. Also had to dress up some of the intersections with the tool joints.

Was hopeing for some additional comments to the framing stuff....must be a busy day for everyone.

A good day framing and a few "forcasted clear" days ahead. Could have used a few more days of prep...but you goota do the best with nice days in December. Hopefully tomorrow LVL's, patio posts and header inplace..... May event get the joists started.

As I gazed at the New space...I'm thinking "What am I going to do with all this space"????? That took me about a second to get past that question...

BlackSpace.....thanks man

Nuttsgt....Fo sho! Good progress today but it got dark to quick to get a picture. Also had to retrieve my keys from my "locked" F-150....used a wooden wedge to pry the top corner open a bit...then a heavy gaged copper ground wire...and a shop light to shed some additional light. I was able to bend that copper as I went....got it pretty fast! Impressed my 20 yr old girl...she was holding the light..maybe she learned something that could come in handy one day. Initially she told me "no way that's going to work...that wire is gonna bend with the pressure" I told her to remember this cause I'm not!!!!

Probally will be opening that up tomorrow (the existing roof) luckly the new shed roof will intersect with the existing about 5-7 inches below the bottom of the window...made things a little simpler. The new 2 x 6 rafters will tie to the existing truss tails of the gambrel roof. Their 2 x 6's that we gussetted to the common trusses when we built the place. Will need to strip back the hardee plank just above the new transition point to flash it up good...Peel n Seal to the rescue! it'll be a slow process for me. I've got a tricky roofing material transition in that area... going to keep the asphalt on the top but the shed roof is going to be metal. I've got a custom roofing manufacturer/installer with some interesting breaks and such that can make a few "special" hold downs and such for me to make this all work. But I have to plan it all out and draw it for them. Can't afford those type of pros so I'll be on my own for the install.

My 83 T-bird had one, so it was available in 96. ;) Love the shop BTW.

The first generation F-Series Ford Truck that I remember with them was when they went to the "smooth" body style.... My truck was the last year of the square(ish) Ford.

I'd had forgotten the combo and left the key inside....iffen I had a combo truck.

That's the best body style! At least it's my favorite.

Oh i see. Right below the dormer with a flat. In my head i was trying to figure out a matching design. For your next addition, you could just add a floor there with a gable end and tie in to the main roof:beer:

There will be no other additions...just ask my wife!!!!:eyecrazy:

Not FLAT but almost...2 on 12....shallow enough that I have to use a metal roof for it...shingles are not allowed at less than 3 on 12 here in Florida.

Roof rafters now in place and 1/2 facia is done. Tomorrow morning we have a little wrap-up then dry-in the roof...rain due Sunday so tomorrow we have to get er closed up.

I'm going with two ply of tar paper on the deck with peel n seal at he transition line and metal flash. I'm going to go for the absolute neatest job on the paper and probally will add some strips as hold downs near the perimeter so that I can buy myself a few months before I have to dive into a roofing job....just don't have time for that finished roof now...got to move to other commitments.

We got the roof on and felted up on Saturday... Got off the roof and 10 min later the rains started... Got very lucky and had some hard working people involved with the project. Have some fine points remaining on the roof but it'll keep till I get ready to do the metal roof. Used 2 layers of felt with a 6in overlap....used alot of buttons...should get 2 months...hopeing...till I do the metal roof.

Today was Sunday and a day off for the carpenter. I cleaned the place up and fabbed this bracket up to tie one end of an LVL to another header.
Had some junk laying around..was made of 2" angle, 1/4" stuff...chopped it up and went to town.

Here's the test fit....all is good except I forgot the holes to the inside thru the beam...If I had thought I'd have done them before I welded it together...would have been easier then...oh well.

I did a double layer of 30 lb with 6in laps. I believe it'll keep up with the weather...I've had to do it like this before one time I had an unanticipated visit to the desert...held up fine.

Despite a bumpy and hurried start we're really showing progress now.

Nail off and strap inspection compeleted...moved to house wrap and windows. Had 2 buddies drop by and lend a hand with the garage door move and wife helped along the way despite my random grumpiness due to stress and lack of sleep... Good Girl!

Inside shots on the next installment. This barn is starting to becoming what I always wanted it to be...a slow process, it's 13 yrs old.
