Never Enough Space, Metal building addition

This is my first Post, so I thought I'd make it a good one.

I decided to add-on to my shop. My currant space is a 31x25 metal building, It has served me well for 10 years now and like many of you, I couldn't imagine living without it.
Over the years I have collected alot more tools, and stuff and just cant seem to get organized, I have shop envy looking at alot of the well designed shops on this site.

So I hatched a plan and poured a 20x31 slab behind my shop ( it dosent block the view from the house back there ) and made a trip to a metal buiding business a few miles up the road. I bought raw square tubing and sheets of tin cut to lenght.

My plan was to fab up some slugs with a 5 degree bend in them ( to reduce the roof pitch) insert them into the original truss and run the addition off of those to the new outer wall. Once the roof is up I will close in the other two walls and remove the original back wall tin and reuse it on the new back wall. I will open up the wall studs and put in 2 headers giving me a 45x31 shop ( with a center pole ).

The new area will have a small bay door 9x9 or 10x10 for "new projects" or to bring long material in so not to haul it next to my other cars. This new area will be a dedicated fab space.

I plan on osb interior wall covering in the area and peg board wall hanging.

Thats enought chatter enjoy the pics.

Godspeed
MrC.

Congrats on the addition.

Does it snow where you are???

I don't know what exact framing memebers and spacing you used, but it sure looks spindley to me! How did you come up with the sizing?

If that roof slope was in Ohio, I sure would plan on a substaintial snow load. I wouldn't want to be sipping coffee in the back room if that roof lets go!

have space, will fill. it's a universal truth. :bounce:

(i'd be tickled to have a 31x25 building by the way, so it's all relative!)

Hey guys, no it dosent snow here.
it has a roof pitch of 1.5 foot drop over 20 ft. lenght.
I know its not alot of pitch, rain water on tin doesn't take much. Yes these type of metal building do look spindelly, I think they get there strenght from the 1,000's screws we put in them.

When completed there will be 45 degree gussets from the walls to the roof and ladder style trusses every 10 ft with a standard truss inbetween those.

OK, intersting constuction you go going on there! :)

The smart *** in me wants to ask why you didn't hang the drywall first!

Everyone has reasons for doing the things the way they do. I'm looking forward to watching this progress. I've got some learnen to do.....

I dout I will be teaching much.
The manufactor of the trusses said he runs a single truss 15 feet. Well I got greedy and pushed it to 20ft.
The single truss saged 2 inches in the middle of the 20ft span after the roof tin was completed. I was hoping it would work but it didn't. So I have began installing a double ladder style truss every 10ft. To ensure it will be strong enough. If after all 3 ladder trusses are installed it still feels spindley I will make all the tusses the ladder style.

I guess that answers the why?
Question. Maybe the why was why did I make the shop deeper insted of wider? Answer: the depth has always been the problem, I could pull a fullsize car/truck in but then had no room to work on it, most time I had it half in and half out for a service.

The original eve is 12ft. I wanted plenty of height in the add-on so I adjusted the angle so I would have a 10.5 low side, If I did not change the angle the roof would have been 7ft on the low side.

I will post some pics of my trusses and you can see how I tied them into the wall stud to make them all one structure. Also I will not be closing in the other side untill later ( money), this will give me a nice carport untill then.

Clearly I'm no engineer, just a guy that need more space.

Its hard to tell where you live Mr C but I am guessing Florida or the Carolinas, any concern over wind shear? We routinely get 60 to 70 mph gusts here and thats always oine of my considerations in building.

Good guess, I live in Florida.

Here is how I installed the ladder trusses ( keep in mind when I stud up the outer 2 walls it will also add support to the outer most trusses), I was able to tie them all into the studs and lock everything together, so not only are all the joints welded they are also slugged and screwed.
I will be adding the other 2 walls ( studs ) asap. and adding the tin when money allows it. all total I will have about $3,000.00 in the entire 20x31 addition which includes the concrete, roof and all the wall tin, of course lights, doors and all the other things needed in a good shop will add up very fast.

That is a neat addition, but that roof pitch is less than 1" drop per 12" distance. Isn't the bare minimum 2/12 for any kind of roofing?

It does rain there right? Seems like it would hold water and eventually leak.

Now I see what your doing with the trusses, looked a little spindley in the first pics. You are gaining a lot of space for the money and its looking good. I put up a 24x32 pole barn last year which is all I could afford but I wish I had sited it different so I could add on easily like your doing.

Keep the progress pics coming. Any pics of the inside of your current shop?

Thanks for the comments, these type of structures are very common from the basic carport to an enclosed building like what I have here. Yes a 1/12 is the minimum for most roofs. Metal roofs shed water a lot faster than shingles, mine is a 1/13 so yes again I'm pushing the limits. Yes it rains and can rain hard here, with the addition of the ladder trusses I feel very confident with the strenght of the roof.

If I showed you the inside of my currant building, they would Ban me from this site. Its pretty messy right now which is the motivation for the new space.

I plan on making the new space a lot nicer and more finished, then clean and finish out the original building.

Godspeed
