New Canadian- 22x22

First post but a long time lurker, while waiting for the house to be finished i took inspiration for my 22x22 from many great garages here.

This is our first home and we only moved in 3 weeks ago, lots has changed since than but many changes will come I'm sure.

when we were handed the keys to the house the garage was only primed a few days earlier. first thing i knew that had to be done was seal and protect the concrete.

So i used EUC Diamond clear as we had a bit left over at work after doing our warehouse floor. on top of the first coat i threw in some paint chip flakes just to add a bit of color to the gloss clear floor.

day before our final walk through

once the floors had setup for a week( no car traffic) I decided to start painting the walls. first thing was 3 days of crack filling, sanding and making sure that the walls would not look terrible once the paint was applied.

the builders were very sloppy in the garage,as you could see every seam on the drywall sheets.

sealed the concrete wall with white paint while waiting on crack filler to dry

started painting the concrete
IMG-20131008-00077_zpsf788601c.jpg

checking the space around my cars for the first time, wanted to make sure that i had lots of room to work around them if needed
IMG-20131010-00089_zps91f2b274.jpg

decided mid wall to change from the lighter slate grey to a darker grey for the lower portion of the wall, the upper wall is a semi-gloss white paint.

Also had the hot water tap added to the garage after i had the electric water tank removed from the house and the propane on demand system installed. ( after I had the house keys in hand)

IMG-20131016-00119_zps4feb4831.jpg

after seeing the white door rails and hangers in a few other spaces i knew i had to do mine as well. Its a nice subtle change.
IMG-20131018-00130_zps706bdcc8.jpg

after seeing the Ikea rods in 55cadillacking's garage i knew that i had a few kicking around not being used so decided to hang one for now for the spray bottles i have.

the garage will be used for mostly detailing cars and a storage space for my summer toy. The blue Mazda is my summer toy and will be kept out of the snow this winter. It is a one of one being the only Supercharged Protege5 that i know of right now that is daily driven.( one off DIY kit)

IMG_2646.jpg

I like to keep it and my other cars clean all year and cant wait to do so in my own space not rented space.

anyone know how to get rid of the drywall compound spots that you are able to see on the walls? all of the paint has now cured and dried over 10 days and you can still see it mostly on one wall.

Looking good. I like the shade of blue on your car. Out of curiosity is that Focus stock?

At first I was like WTF, it looks like he used clear on the floor :headscrat Then I read, and went O... Makes perfect sense.

So i used EUC Diamond clear as we had a bit left over at work after doing our warehouse floor. on top of the first coat i threw in some paint chip flakes just to add a bit of color to the gloss clear floor.

BTW, Welcome

thanks, Focus is stock minus a black vinyl roof, have only owned it since January of this year and already put 40K km on it. It was bought to be a reliable family car and i already have a toy that's way past stock if i feel the urge to dump money into a car.

sanded the paint off and removed drywall compound only to redo the compound, re prime and re paint the wall to remove the ghosted compound spots i had.

and since the cold and frost is back the wife's daily is parked in the garage for her early morning shifts so she does not have to scrape windows.

Also got in touch with Melanie at Racedeck for samples of the Freeflow tiles.

Wecome aboard friend , nice place you have there ! , keep the picture coming !

thank you, I also added similar bars that 55cadillacking has in his garage for my spray bottles.

Took this while getting the Focus ready for the coming salt and snow with some Collinite 845

and most current and up to date pictures, the T8 tubes are on a separate switch and the wiring just has to be cleaned up a bit better. So these are almost a year after buying the house.

Great update, the garage looks massive with the little Mazda in the corner. I really like the black and blue shelving and drawers together. And the lighting really tops it off.

I've got myself a Turbo Diesel 2010 version of the Mazda, we call it a Mazda3 over here in Australia. Fantastic little cars, definitely one of my favourites so far.

Yours look like an EV here with that cord behind it :)

Thanks, I wish we could get the new Mazdas in diesels around here I might have considered one instead of the new Focus as a daily. I've gotten used to unplugging the trickle charger off the car now when I do take it out, those little AGM battery's do not keep a full charge for long when left unused or unplugged for weeks.

Next is having the electrician over to add more outlets in the walls as well as a few in the ceiling. Also debating on ordering Racedeck flooring or not for where we park the daily driver, working on colors and patterns now.

Ah ohhh :) I just did the same thing with an electrician, great move. And very exciting about those Race Deck Samples. I can definitely vouch for their ability to transform a space.

based on your experience can i lay it down just where the wife parks her car all winter so that i can continue to work on my toys on the other side? Or would it be better to lay down the floor over the whole 400Sq ft or so and just lay down some plywood or something to protect it while i wrench on a few cars this winter?

Personally i would say the whole floor, however there are nice examples where people have created a "parking pad" concept, to just have enough under a car or motorcycle. I guess it would come down to what type of work you will be doing. If its welding, people just throw down a welding blanket. If its using a jackstand, just put some sort of cushion as most jack stand bases have sharp edges which could mark up your floor. There are a ton of examples on this site of guys who have a fully functional mechanical set-up on Race Deck Flooring. I personally only used mine for detailing, wheel swaps and light work.

none of the work being done so far is anything crazy, mostly adding forced induction, lift kits, as well as other random wiring/electrical stuff. Most of the work done is detailing cars and swapping wheels similar to yourself.

Welding is all done in the shop same as most real metal work. However i have been known to leave a car on jack stands for a long period of time while replacing suspension or other parts so ill have to keep that in mind and maybe order a few of the solid tiles to use under the stands instead of making up the free flow tiles.

Wish i could do that same Mr. Bean park job in my garage. Helps to not have long cars as well. You should have filmed the process of getting it in there :)

it would have be boring to watch, I simply raised the drivers side of car and placed on the wheel dollies. then lift the other side and place under the wheels and push the car where i want. I'm sure having a lighter/smaller car would be even easier to move around but this one moved easily by myself.

added some shelving above the tool box, there will be a vertical opening door on it eventually to hide things from dust.

Nice, clean garage. I like the color scheme. Interested to see how the epoxy/Racedeck combo turns out.

as am i, I'm not ready for the racedeck yet still trying to figure out patterns and colors.

installed the Kijiji find 32" Plasma over the weekend and moved a plug to behind it to hide the wires as well as the cable, just waiting on my digital box before i can enjoy it.

also picked up this Husky lower cabinet for super cheap from the store, still not sure what to do with it.

and the reason i want the Racedeck so i can wash the salty daily's in the winter and not worry about walking in the water before it flows out of the garage.

Nice job! I envy that you've done so much in the first year of ownership. I'm about 18 months in to my first garage and not nearly as far.

I'm sure other's will disagree, but I got a few squares of racedeck to see if it was something I'd like and the noise it makes while walking it on drives me mad. I'm sure you can put some sort of underlayment or something down but something to consider.

Keep up the good work!
