New building questions.

I am getting ready to order a new building and have a few question. Right now I'll keep it to just two. First is I had a quote for perma columns, are they worth it? I'm in northern ohio and my ground seems to hold moisture.

Next is insulation. I considered bookshelf girts and fiberglass or just regular girts and fiberglass. Or what I was thinking is 2 in spray foam and just running liner horizontally up the wall screwed to the posts. Anyone see any problems with this besides dust collecting on the ribs?

How much extra $ for the perma columns? If your going always going to run the heat in the winter I would do the spray foam + fiberglass to get R-19 wall. If you are only going to heat it when your working in there I wouldn't spend the extra $ on spray foam.

My house has a couple inches of spray foam to seal all the penetrations with fiberglass on top. Its a 2350sf ranch so far my highest gas bill has been $106.

I did the wet set perma columns. loved how the barn turned out. Still working on finishing the inside. I had a guy thta was supposed to run my electric to the barn but hasn't showed yet. What size wire would I need from meter to barn 180' 100 amp box?

Nice shop, 1 Gauge copper or 1/0 aluminum should give 100 amps at 150 feet with acceptable voltage drop. Assuming direct buried or in conduit. If running from the meter, you'll need a breaker there to protect the wire going to the shop. Some have used a 90 Amp branch circuit to supply the shop from main panel and then use 2 gauge copper to save a few dollars.

Yea it will be from the meter. I just had a new one put in at the road it has a 200 amp breaker for the house but nothing else for the barn just empty slots for more breakers. They have 2/2/2/4 al at menards.

I'll certainly vote for bookshelf girts. It makes sheeting and sealing the building inside and out a breeze, and provided your girt and post spacing is thought out, it creates bays that fiberglass batts plug right into straight out of the package. I insulated the walls of this entire 30'x60'x13' in a matter of hours, as the only cuts I had to make to the insulation were around the windows and doors.
