The odd size pairings and branding likeness to SK SuperKrome were my first thoughts here too.

Tone Tool are nice wrenches and go up to 36mm plus size pairings done sensibly .
A cheap set size paired correctly is werkzeug 8pc 8 to 24mm, broaching not finest but they usable budget option .
Toptul do some but only ever seen couple singles and don't think do a full size range .
Genius was poor sizes and for price better off getting Tone, Beta, Carlyle or probably this Capri set .

Yeah report back. Very curious.

Here are a few shots of these Capri wrenches compared to the Mountain long pattern ratcheting wrenches (also sold under various brands like EZ Red, Platinum, etc.). The business end is 13mm, a size I use often. The Mountain is 13-15mm and the Capri is 12-13mm. The difference in length is about 3”. The mountain is a little under 16”, the Capri is 13” and a Stahlwille series 14 is 7.5” for comparison. The extra length (mountain vs. Capri) isn’t meaningful to me since should be able to get more than enough leverage on either. The business end is about 30% thinner and the outer diameter is probably 1/8” thinner or slightly more. The Capri outer diameter is a hair smaller than the black ratcheting insert in the mountain wrench. The Capri outer diameter is roughly the same as my other standard non ratcheting wrenches.

These look like the Genius as said. Genius skips 11mm and duplicates a few sizes; no issue for me. Both are machined out of bar or plate, not forged. Also fine. The only issue is the beam edges are not rounded- not comfortable to use, unless maybe you're wearing leather gloves. The Genius have held up perfectly, no issues, so these should be the same.

Edit: another to consider is the Tone M05 series on Amazon.jp; these have more comfy beams

I feel like the comfort factor may be academic. The wrenches are long enough to get you plenty of leverage so you shouldn’t need to apply so much force. If you’re choking up on the wrenches, maybe, but I didn’t find the Capri wrenches bad. They don’t have an elliptical cross section like most, it’s rectangular, thin with rounded edges.

The odd size pairings are an oversight imho. If someone designed these for automotive use, they haven’t worked on a car. I would never use both sides of the 12-13 combo on one car, but I would use the 13-15. It’s not the end of the world since I’ll only use these for sneaking into tight spaces where I need that zero angle.

Okay, I think I get what you're saying. If you work primarily on, say, Japanese cars, the 12/14 pairing makes sense. In fact, fewer wrenches to purchase, perhaps. But for someone like me who may see any size fastener on anything (car, tractor, fire engine, etc) from anywhere, those pairings aren't as critical.

I love learnin' stuff on GJ though!

Edit: typing while you posted above.

Yep, 99% of everything I work on is Asian (JIS standard), so I would strongly consider buying a lower-priced "JIS" set that includes 8x10, 12x14, and 17x19 wrenches. In the set shown, one end of all the wrenches is mostly useless to me, and I'd normally never end up using the 16x18.

Of course, my situation is a little unusual; most people end up working on a variety of stuff and would prefer the complete set with no skipped sizes because they'll end up using all of them at some point.

Still, it would be nice to have more rational size pairings in the wrenches. So if a Toyota is in front of you, you could grab just those three wrenches.

You can buy a no skip set with sizes paired better, tone and werkzueg being 2 examples at various price points .
numerical running order pairing is pretty silly ...

Seems like it huh? It's an issue pretty much industry wide. Even the venerable S-o doesn't get it right, and they're supposed to be the king of automotive mechanics tools...

Here's a KTC box end set (I own it) that gets it right...

Koon Trucking on youtube does a pretty good review of these compared to his Snap On set. He owns a set of both and gives Capri a very positive review.

Snap-on does sell individuals with the right size combinations. I bought an 8/10, 12/14, and 17/19 to use on my Subaru. But yeah, the set is not right.

The size pairings don't bother me as my toolbox is a few feet away from a car in my garage. The beam comfort may not matter to some, but when I bought my Genius set a few years ago those were the only negative comments on Amazon. And it's not a dealbreaker, but I do agree. If you use the Tone vs Genius 17X19 you'll probably agree; if not, you have hands of steel :)

Ok, just to add a little clarity, the edges of the Capri wrenches are all eased. My best approximation is anywhere from 1/32” radius to as little as 1/64” radius. It varies depending on which wrench you pick up. Looking at the reviews on the genius wrenches, 1 out of 5 one star reviews were about the sharp profiles, the rest were on the flexible nature of the wrenches. Out of the remaining 55+ positive reviews, about 3 talked about the sharp profiles, the most recent being 2016.

Thank you. Overall thoughts on them?

Unfortunately it may be a while before I put them to use. The next 60F weekend may be a few months off and I'm only a DIYer, so it's not like I'll use them daily.

Any update on the capri's?

What would be better, the Capri sizing or the Genius sizing? Neither Is perfect from my thinking but..

I use gearwrench ratcheting / box end for SAE. I have gearwrench ratcheting/box in smaller metric. I use ratcheting SK g pro double box for bigger metric . I use Bergen double box non ratcheting to protect the g pros breaking fasteners loose. I hung on a Bergen 14/15mm 14mm end breaking muffler bolts loose on my daughters Yaris. Plenty of kroil used. The Bergen didn’t skip a beat. Great inexpensive wrenches . Last 3 pics: Bergen next to a SK g pro both 14/15-Bergen longer. 2 pics of Bergen 14/15.

The site says these have SmartKrome....kinda seems like they ripped off the marketing of some other company with initials identical to the snazzy word itself, eh?

So what? Every now and then you hear complaints about SK's supreme krome not being up to standard. I've never had any chrome related issues with my made in Taiwan tools.

Looks like Capri is official on the bandwagon of companies who rebrand these wrenches. My Canadian tire branded Gearwrench ones with a box end and ratcheting flex head open ends are cheaper.

Worked fine squeezing behind the fan housing to change an idler pulley, no complaints. It does appear Eastwood is selling the same set under their own brand for half the price ($55 plus shipping). Someone on GJ confirmed its Taiwan made, so likely from the same OEM.

https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-5-piece-extra-long-double-box-end-metric-wrench-set.html

Maybe yes, maybe no. The Eastwood set uses laser etched size and brand markings which suggest a more generic Taiwan maker or could have been an option to reduce costs. The sides of the Eastwood version seems more rounded than the Capri's. :dunno:

If you look on Amazon at all of the strangely named extra long wrenches and ratcheting wrenches, they're similar to each other but not exactly the same.:dunno:

I bought an extra long zero offset metric boxed end wrench set years ago from the JTC Tools (another Taiwan made brand, large ebay presence & they have a tool truck in Atlanta area) AAPEX booth for like $50 and they have served me well for over 10 years:beer:

Agreed, they aren't for sure the same wrenches.

I like that you at least know who made them, Genius.

The Tone m05 are actually pretty reasonable on Amazon jp. Haven't seen much first hand accounts on here, a poster above sounded favorable. Downside, forget the warranty I imagine.

I saw the laser etching and assumed that was another option offered by the OEM. I did some more searching and found Infar makes wrenches that appear identical to the Capri wrenches. I can’t locate another Taiwanese manufacturer making these XL DBE (I didn’t search exhaustively).

I've been eyeballing their forty five degree offset metric DBE's. I have quite a bit of Tekton but none of their wrenches. I don't find too many options out there in my price range and from a source I trust.

I wish someone would make these XL box wrenches with a flex ratchet head, 12 or maybe 6 pt. I have the Gearwrench version, but by the time the "spline drive" engages, you have swung the wrench for 10°, completely eliminating the purpose of the high tooth count.

EDIT: Tekton, Capri, where are you guys???

Tekton offers XL flex head ratcheting wrenches.

https://www.tekton.com/long-flex-ratcheting-box-end-wrench-sets?unit=metric

Capri does not.

However, there are many versions to choose from on Amazon. Platinum, EX Red, Monster, ATD, V8, and a host of other no name versions can be had from $70 -$145 a set. I'm not sure if they're available in Canada though.
