I have been meaning to make a more permanent solution for my abrasive chop saw... I had been storing it under my work bench, and every time I wanted to use it I'd set up sawhorses or a work table, complete the job and put it all away again. It was kind of a pain, and not too convenient especially for small projects.
I wanted something portable, so I could wheel it around my shop as needed and tuck it away in a corner when not in use. It was also important that it be stable, but I wanted to keep a small footprint so it wouldn't take up too much space. After reading a on of threads and looking at all sorts of pictures, I had a design in my head, I went to the local steel yard and built it-
The base is 1 1/4" plate. All the tube is 1/8" thick. It' pretty heavy, but well balanced so not hard to move on the stand.
When not in use, the material rest slides into a holder on the back, and doubles as the handle-
With the saw mounted. It's VERY stable... With the material rest, I can work with longer pieces easily, if they are super long, I just use a separate stand to support the end.
I added a 25' power cord and a 4 outlet box to it. It always seems like I am using other tools (grinders, etc) when I am using the chop saw, and this way I can keep them all plugged in at the same time. Also, I don't have to search for an unused extension cord.
It wheels around the shop nicely on the 7" solid wheels, and they also provide a bit more stability when the saw is in use. Overall, I am happy with it.
Another plus is that since it’s mostly used steel, it was less than $50, and that’s with the wheels setting me back $20!
Not sure why the pics are posting that way!
