New compressor question?

Hey Fellas
I just bought me a new Ingersol Rand 5 hp. 80 gal, compressor to put in my new garage. I have never owned a big compressor like this one. I have some questions to ask you guys. After the compressor fills up the tank and shuts off and you are done using it should I turn the shut off valve and leave the tank pressurized or should I let the air out of the tank. Does it hurt to leave the tank with air pressure in it for long periods of time? Also how often should I drain the moister out of the bottom?

I leave mine charged all the time. Make sure you have easy acsess to the drain to bleed it of moisture or better yet get an automatic drain.

i turn off the outlet valve incase one of my lines blows out my compressor wont run none stop until it locks up and i extended the water drain on the bottom with some pipe and a ball valve. i drain my when im done using it for the day when in use. depending on use i change my oil in the pump every six months.

You can leave the tank pressurized. Close the discharge valve when you are done for the day.

I also highly recommend extending the drain valve out from the bottom of the tank to where you can reach it.

Leave the tank pressurized. No need to run the motor to pressurize an 80 gallon tank every time you need to use the compressor. That will waste money and energy.

It is a good idea to install a valve to separate the tank from the rest of the piping in your system. It will come in handy when you need to make changes to your pipes or replace a quick disconnect fitting. Consider a valve that vents the system pipe pressure but maintains the pressure in the tank often called a "3-way valve" or safety valve.

Yup. On my 60gal Devilbis I put a ball valve right next to the original valve just to make it easier to shut off the air feed to the lines.

I also drain mine in the mornings when it is cold & not at the end of the day when the tank is hot & more moisture is suspended in the air.

I had mine wired through a service disconnect on the wall next to it.

Breakin varies from manufacture to manufacture but a basic breakin allows the rings to seat,set, and seal and the valves to seal. Run the compressor for 30 minutes without letting it pressurize. Just leave the air blow to atmosphere. This is the minimum for proper btrakin of the unit. Some manufactures require retorqing of the head, etc. your book will tell you. If you bought the unit from a tractor suppy, VERIFY your pump is an American pump and not the chinese cheapie that I/R puts on some of the TSC units. Breakin is different for each.

Campbell Hausfield has an extended drain kit that will put the drain within easy reach. It includes fittings, pipe and a ball valve. You can get them at Walmart or Tractor Supply

I leave mine pressurised all the time. I do turn the power to it off when I leave the garage. That way if I have a line leak the worst that happens is the whole system drains. I chose this method because I put the switch right at my bench making it very convenient. I will often not even turn my compressor on if I am only blowing something off or filling a tire.

I agree. Turn the power off when not being used. I came home to find my IR compressor running continuously because the reed valves failed. (ie when it looses pressure it turns on)

If I hadn't of caught it in time it probably would have either self destructed or maybe even caused a fire.

One manufacturer recommend running 1hr @ constnt ~140 psi for break in.
