i ordered both of the comfort grip 36t ratchets. get both before they stop making them and the 72t take over since the 36t are very well liked and have held up for many and are a snap on copy basically. sell off the rest of my cman ratchets i have laying around to cover the cost of these new ones.

Looks like a nice ratchet.
As cheap ratchets go, I really think HF' Pittsburgh line of ratchets just has everyone beat. Their "low profile" ratchet is a rip off of the Snap On, but for around $20.00 it's a VERY nice ratchet and a damn decent knock off.
image_26311.jpg

Now like you, I have a little of everything. Snap On, SK, Craftsman, Kobalt, Husky, Mac, and HF (and perhaps some that I can't think of right now).

But I gotta admit, these days I find myself reaching for the Pittsburgh composit ratchet before ANY of my other ratchets, even some of the ones' that I have a little bit of emotional attachment to (yeah, I get emotionally attached to tools sometimes).

image_25202.jpg

The 72t action is pretty smooth, it's very light, and these are stronger than they have a right to be. No I don't use them for the real tough stuff, for those I typically reach for my SK first, or my Snap On since both are nearly bomb-proof. But for everything else, the Pittsburgh composite is very nice to work with, and I've never seen them priced OVER $20.00. I have one in 3/8" and 1/4". They make them in 1/2", but to my way of thinking, I grab 1/2" when I know something is going to give me a rough time, so 99% of the time, I reach for my old SK when it comes to 1/2", so I as much as I like the Pittsburgh composite, it doesn't make sense in 1/2" for me.

i have some of those HFs. the 2 weak points is 1- the switch lever is held on with a screw which isnt good idea bc its either to tight or to lose and if to loose it can skip and has on me bc it has loosen and 2- the pawls are a ****** design. if they would fix those 2 flaws they would make a good ratchet. also the non-detent flexheads is also a problem but an easy fix.

they came such a long away with those ratchets and so many other things that those few things shouldn't be a issue to sort out.

I haven't had any issues yet, and I'm not trying to imply they're perfect; because they certainly are not; as you point out. But for $12-$15 they're way better than they ought to be.

Now FOR ME the pawls haven't been any sort of an issue, but I agree on the switch lever, I've been keeping an eye on that lever and thus far it's been fine.

But I should qualify that with the fact that I don't spending a lot of time wrenching. I maintain my family's motorcycles and that's not a ton of work. I work my my cars when I have to, but not very often fortunately.

Still, I have WAY higher quality ratchets, but I have really come to love those lightweight composite ratchets. And it seems that many others have come to love them as well.

Anyhow...I would never recommend them to someone as their ONLY ratchet; come on, it's a composite ratchet. But for light amateur use they have become favorites for me.

the funny thing is i had WAY less problems with the quick release ones VS the non-quick release (pro model) even tho they share the same pawl and lever design. not really sure why that is. just odd to me.

I have a lot of respect for HF's ratchets and sockets; it's probably the best line of anything they sell. They have put a lot of effort into making them good and it has paid off. I would take HF sockets/ratchets over Craftsman any day. I would actually take HF ratchet's over US made Craftsman ratchets (I have always thought the craftsman teardrop ratchets were ****; only ratchet that consistently gave me trouble).

But one of the weaknesses with HF is their frequent shifting of manufacturers. For the most part they have kept the quality pretty good on their ratchets and sockets, but you do see inconsistencies from time to time. So I always tell people to closely inspect anything they buy from HF. And that goes triple for a ratchet because that's a tool that when it gives, it results in mangled knuckles...I for one, happen to like my knuckles just the way they are. (and truth be told, when things get tough, I reach for my old US made ratchets)

Generally speaking for the hobbiest, I think most of HF's tools are adequate; and that's about the best I can say for HF. I find them convenient for when I need a tool or tools for something I'm not likely to do often. For tools I'm going to use frequently, or on things that really matter, I tend to steer away from HF.

I have never broken a HF socket or ratchet. Now I do use their sockets fairly frequently, but not the steel ratchets (I have some older ones, the SK copies). Even under heavy use, I've never broken a ratchet or socket from HF. But like I said, of something is really tough, I reach for my Snap On/SK/Mac ratchets.

The composite ratchets are the first HF's that I have really liked. I don't have any of the Snap On knock offs but everyone I've spoken to who has them likes them a lot. And when I have looked them over, I was very impressed when you consider the price. Destructive testing I've seen on Youtube shows them to be the equal of ANY import ratchet at most any price where toughness is concerned. So they're a lot of value for your dollar.

Still, as nice as the all steel ones are, I just don't have any use for them. I have Snap On, Mac, and SK in all steel ratchets and I'm not even remotely unhappy with them.

On the Duralast side, I had a chance to use one of the Duralast 3/8 in a 1/4 ratchets last week. Not a bad toy, but still seem to be an answer looking for a problem. 3/8" drive sockets were thicker walled than O.D. of the ratchet, and too fat to fit down where some of the bolts were, so ended up switching to a 1/4" ratchet and socket to get the job done. (Changing upper intake isolater bushings and IMRC bushings on a Ford 4.2).
1/4" Duralast ratty worked fine.
On the Harbor Freight composite ratchet, I have the older version with the raised/curved handle. Works great. Even my dog liked it (Chew toy...)
Still works great, just has "patina" now.

I'm a HF junkie, I have most of their ratchets. I've found them to be well made and pretty tough. Only done some 2 cycle engine work with them so far:

.
With the quality of HF's ratchets and sockets these days, I could be happy with nothing but HF for socket work. Fortunately, I don't have to have nothing but HF as over the years I have amassed a wide variety (spice of life). But for my uses which is mostly motorcycle and sometimes car, the HF stuff would serve me just fine.

And I'll even admit the HF Snap On copies are nicer ratchets than many of my bigger name ratchets. It will never be a Snap On, but you're getting a VERY good ratchet for REALLY cheap.

Oh, and you need some of the new style composites; I like them better than the old one's...but that's just me.

My composites are the "offset composite ", those are probably the ones I use the most.

just got my duralast comfort grip ratchets and WOW they make all my other taiwan ratchets look/feel like ****. there really nice and build like a tank. they feel heavy like a snap-on. chrome is perfect in every way. nice positive switch lever. strong handle. these put anything that HF has to shame big time. other then wanting a higher tooth count these ratchets are great.

Just saw these today. Has anyone tried them? They're in the packaging so well you can't move them to check out the action.

The one next to the QR on the right is a 90 tooth. Handle was odd though. I'm really interested in these new 72t.

Update: The 72t aren't on the AZ website yet. Still listed as the 36t.

I have one and love it. I use my SO FCF72 more because it flexes, but they're both great.

Who knows?
I just bought a 72t 1/2" drive, long flexhead a few days ago. I was in a pinch when my car broke down and I needed to yank a O2 sensor. I've got bukoo 3/8" flexheads...so I went with the 1/2" instead. Works pretty well.

I had seen these and they look good, I had always figured that they were from an Apex factory. They sure look like Gearwrench and Craftsman low profile designs. Good low price option.

I don't think they are Apex. They are Taiwan made. I have a non flex head 72t 1/4 drive that came in a socket set. They are really nice for the price. I got the 45pc set for $20 during the holidays. Excellent tools for the money. The new ratchets at AutoZone are really good. They just came out with some 90t models too. If they could get a better supplier for pliers and screwdrivers they would be a damn good value top to bottom. I have some of the bit sockets and they are great quality. The wrenches look really nice too.

I've seen the 90t and they look and feel great but only had them in 1/2 and I have a ton of 1/2 ratchets specially the standard length seems its like all I fine. When they come out with a 90t 1/4 & 3/8 I'm game as the price is good and so far the one duralast ratchet I've got has been a tank, for the prices you can't beat them.
'
Oh I forgot I have the Mimi compact 3/8 and it's pretty good I've not used it but once just ***** it don't come apart.

Do the ratchets have the "Backwards" selector?
They sell decent 1/2" drive 6 point regular depth sockets, but not in sets, only individually.

my duralast 36t ratchets have the selector the same way snap on does it. which i guess is the regular way. its never been a problem for me which way they have gone so its all regular for me lol

Until I started hearing about the Taiwan ratchets and the backward selector, I never noticed/cared either.

I need to replace my 1/2 and took a serious look at the 18" flex head I pictured. If I pick one up next week, I'll be happy to open it up for everyone.

I went back to buy the 18" 1/2 flex and all the new 72t flex were gone.

Does anyone else's AutoZone only ever have one of each item on the shelf?

I'm thinking it might be worth it to order online with some other things and get the discount.

UPDATE: Nevermind- the new ones still aren't listed on the website.

If you want a REALLY low profile cheap ratchet, and get it with a quick release as well (something HF doesn't give you), COO Taiwan and a really cheap price... oh yeah both 3/8 and 1/4":
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZYJIE3M/?tag=atomicindus08-20
I got a set off of eBay a while back for $17.99 including shipping. New. I counted 62 teeth. Moderate back drag, more than my 72 tooth Tekton but less than my old Craftsman pear heads.
