Was browsing ebay and found this pic. Ten year old boy humor kicked in and now I'm here.

The older side of me now wonders how well this works in grabbbing peoples attention.

Seen something similar the other week with automotive parts. The seller had his wife/gf/ or whomever holding the parts with massive cleavage showing.

Couldn't find an appropriate spot so I guess since my venting is geared towards ebay I would stick it here. I have a snap on rep that comes every few months to my house. That being said I wanted to pick up a couple pair of pliers and really didn't want to wait for him. I went to ebay since Craigslist was out of stock. I jumped into 2 auctions towards the end made my bids. Not only was I outbid on a pair of 47cf pliers but the dam winner paid 36 bucks for the bid and another 6 for shipping. Yep 42 bucks for something that is 33 bucks on snap on's website with free shipping....AND THEY WERE USED....second auction on a pair of 137cf's...again I was outbid and the winning bidder paid 45 bucks plus 3 odd bucks to ship..they were used as well and sell on snap on for 36.50...I just don't get it. Very rarely do you have an actual auction with no reserve. Most times there is a crazy reserve, high starting bid, or some crazy buy it now price. I thought ebay was for auctions. Not to mention these buyers paying over an items new retail price for a used tool. What's happening. Sorry..had to vent. Thought I was going to win some pliers tonite.

Obviously that's great news for sellers and I've seen people pay over retail for things many times in the past. It's a number of factors I believe. Pure ignorance is one, of course. Another cause is that people get caught up in auctions and lose touch with common sense. They simply must "Win" and auctions love using the term win to describe the highest bidder because it makes them feel good. The other things I can think of is that people have money in their PayPal accounts, which some places like Snap On don't accept and also maybe their significant others don't know they're spending the money. Finally, people pile up eBay Bucks from previous purchases and just want to spend them before they expire. It's definitely a frustrating and confusing experience for buyers as it just makes no sense at all.

I've won 90% of my eBay auctions with one strategy. I decide the maximum I will pay for an item and then I list that amount on auction sniper with 3-5 second insertion before end of auction. That way, I don't have to be around for the end of the auction and if I don't win, I'm cool with it. I know I didn't overpay and someone else did.

You both make very good points. I have been an ebay user since 2001. I remember back in those days it was pure auctions..then the reserves came and then the buy it nows. Slowly the high starting bid crept in. Paypal balances and ebay bucks surely contribute to some of the moronic over bidding on items that can be bought the next website over for less money and another 6 mouse clicks. Definetly a sellers market these days..mostly if you have high end items..tools especially.

While sure it works for people of a certain ****** inclination, my guess is the following Ebay tactic has broader appeal and probably does a better job getting the attention of the target market...

I recently started selling on eBay again after about 4 years off. First off, yes; seems the economy is much better, as I have been moving about 85% of my items (straight auction, no reserves, only an occasional BIN).
But secondly, I was rather miffed to see eBay is taking a percentage of the SHIPPING you charge, nevermind the redundancy of again getting a cut via PayPal. On a $300 item, eBay/PayPal took $51.24 !!

I believe we need a link to seller.

I don't believe the seller didn't mean the arrangement to look like a shlong, I was already aware of using titis to sell anything. Go check out a Finnish Beer commercial.

High end tools cost more money to buy to resell. Paypal, eBay, fuel costs, last minute snipe programs, eBay scammers, non-payers,..... everyone wants a piece of your pie. So if you want to start your auction at $1.99 then you HAVE to be prepared to sell it for $1.99. It's a ****-shoot sometimes for setting the initial auction price; too high and no bids, too low and sometimes it sells for a loss.

It's is about making money. Paypal and eBay take a percentage of your sales profit, that's the price of admission to the game. Every time they change the rules it's to make more money so they created the eBay stores. I have a buddy who runs a store, he has a ton of stuff he puts up and it sits awaiting buyers. It's another dimension to the game.

I think the fees are outrageous as well. Ebay and paypal are making millions off advertisers and everything else they have partnered for. Taking the seller for another 5-10% of the transaction is horrible. At local auctions the buyers premium is understood. We have no advertisers etc to fatten the auction houses pockets. Plus we have a regional audience attending in someone's barn. Ebay has a global reach allowing billions to view and bid on items. I could only imagine the multitude of revenue streams they have vs. the guy in the barn selling used tractor tires covered in cow ****.

Thank everyone that jumped into selling electronics **** they bought by the containerload, then decided to sell it for $0.01 BIN with $199.99 shipping to dodge the fees.

Ebay could have done something like Amazon does and allow you to charge $x.** shipping, but they decided letting you charge whatever you wanted in price and shipping, then taking their cut of all of it, then requiring use of the payment processor they bought, then taking another cut of all of it was more lucrative. :lol_hitti

As for prices, well, people are dumb. I lose probably 75%+ of the auctions I bid on. Not because I did something wrong, but because someone decided to pay more than I was willing to pay. I consider shipping, my risk of getting screwed, and what I can find something for otherwise, and plenty of auctions go for well above that... often more than I can buy the same thing for new. Hey, whatever floats their boat.

How did you know my tactics. I do the same thing. Drives me nuts when people just jack up the price on the first day of auction.

I sometimes like to throw out an early bid, about 80% of my max price, if I see something with no bids or only a couple low bids. It often seems to scare people off if it's a low-interest item, especially if there's a few others available. I won my plow controller that way, when I searched completed auctions I won it for the lowest price I saw. :pimpflash

OTOH if I think it'll have a bidding war, I'll wait for the last couple seconds... either I'll win it, or someone else is guaranteed to pay more than I was willing to.

I love it when peeps hit my auctions early and big, usually sets the tone of things to come.

On the other hand, 95% or more of my bidding is in the last 10 seconds.
