New electric service question.

This spring I will be installing a new electric service and a well at a farm I purchased. I would like to get a 400 amp service run to an independent riser. From that I would like to feed a separate barn with a 200 amp load center and have the capability of feeding a future house with a 200 amp load center.

Do I need a a 400 amp combination meter base? Recommendations?

Also, I'd like for the meter base to have some slots for circuits.

You are going to have to check your PoCo's requirements for what you want to do, they all have different requirements.

Your PoCo may want a load calc before putting in a 400a service. As said above check with them. And they will also have specific requirements for type of meter pan etc...

That is what you want, but you may have to go to something like this.

This would require a double lugged meter base, or possibly a double lug adapter.

What is the model on those disconnects and what did they run? My PoCo requires a disconnect outside, I want my breaker box inside. I found breaker boxes cheaper than safety switches so I'm putting in a MH passthrough load center to meet their requirement but, I'd rather have something like those.

You sound like your solving the same problem I faced. It solved the problem as well as having the 8 breakers that I used for site power till the buildings were up. I have a Square D CU12L400cb meter base/box. It came with one 200A breaker installed. It has a slot for a second 200A built in. So the box does what you need. In addition it has 8 slots for other breakers (qd?) that I use for outside power and the well house. I think there might be a picture of it in my build thread below. Also at

So does the feed to the house and your other building come directly off the 200A breaker or do you have to go through another breaker on the buss bar ?

Similar to what the wizard said this is what I did. We have FPL. Not sure if same up in Jacksonville. 320 meter can on FPL's approved list. Then feed two disconnects. I have no branch circuit breakers in the disconnect panels but you could get the disconnect panel with a few slots as well. If you have the space on the riser might be a cheaper option for you. Maybe two vertical posts with two perpendicular horizontal beams to mount the three panels on?

This is the base https://www.kmelectric.com/milbank-manufacturing-u5864-x-hsp/ I would think $300 for the base.. Probably $120-$150 for the disconnects with circuits... About half of that big meter can you posted

Well I followed the link in my post and it is dead. Searching out the part number it now shows a picture that is somewhat different than what I remember by box being. I do remember that I had to tap off the meter base side and run wires through the divider to feed the second 200a breaker.

MY panel now has two 200a breakers in it, one for the house and one for the shop. I also has a breaker set for the well pump and a couple for the outdoor receptacles. Similar to what is shown in the current picture.

I am partial to Square D, QO line stuff (I know, a weakness from my childhood, seriously)

So I wanted a main panel and all sub-panels to be sqD with common breakers.

If you do have a preference, find it and ask the poco engineer to approve- dont ask for his opinion

Also, many of the online prices are full retail- dont just shop online, get with a decent counterman

I talked to the engineer at the power company and he said they recommend using this:

http://www.milbankworks.com/catalogs/u5890-5895.pdf

Specifically I think I would want something like the U5892-X-2/200

Looking them up online though the panel alone is $1100-1300 bucks!

Milbank is a pretty good company, I see their products used quite often here in Minnesota (I'm a little surprised they have a presence in Florida, I thought they were mainly marketed in the upper Midwest.) Typically their pricing is competitive as well, chances are you're going to spend that kind of money no matter what brand you go with.

edit: as mentioned above, the list price and the actual out-the-door price aren't necessarily the same thing.

Won't get a meter main all in one in a QO, only Homeline, the mains in the Milbank unit were Seimens.

This is for my farm in Indiana. I'll move back there once I retire from the navy in a year or so.
