Stumbled on the site looking for a vise. Been turning wrenches large and small in one form or another for a good time. Started buying to keep my junk going, more junk = more tools. Its a viscous cycle. Favorite mechanic line from a movie, the mechanic to Michael J. Fox in Doc Holiday "I've been looking for a reason to buy one of them new metric tool sets".

I'm still looking for a used U/S vise, 4 1/2" or 5". I prefer factory finish. Doesn't have to be swivel. Needs to be built heavy, going in my rolling tool box (97 Ford S/D 450).

#9: Doc Holiday is one of my favorite movies and remember the scene just after the mechanic opened the front of the Porsche saying where did the engine go.

i know a few things about vises and old tools so might i suggest you start your search on your local Craigslist for a 50+ year old US or English made vise (vice). if you are looking for old or more tools almost every estate and garage sale has a vise sitting on a bench so just ask if you can buy it if you like it.

that said let me know your budget and i'll give you a few options of the nicer ones to look for. or start reading the 30,000 posts on the main vise thread that Garage Journal has with new additions daily and find some you like that are on that thread.

cheers and welcome.

BTW you might want to put your location in your personal GJ profile so when you are on other threads the other members will be able to answer your questions better or let's us know what part of the world you live in.

if you have any questions just ask and we'll try to help if we can

Thanks for the reply on the vise. I bit the bullet today and bought a Wilton all terrain vise #10010. It's a Chinese made rig But it will do until I can do better.

The design is something for me to build on. It will do a decent job attached to the receiver hitch on my flatbed but I am also going to add a removable receiver to my shop built welding table at table height. This will eliminate the vise taking up valuable real estate on the tabletop and bring the work to a more comfortable level.

Has anyone done this and posted any details? I guess I should start a new post without high jacking my own.

On the U.S. vise I'm not above spending about 1/2 or better what a new one would cost. I would like to have a good flat base vise to stay in the shop.

Thanks

#9: check out the vises of garage journal thread in the general tool section when you get time to look at all the cool old vises US, English and worldwide produced and see which ones you like. it's probably got 30,000 posts so it might take some time to look. also in the vise repair 101 thread i started there are 4 YouTube videos of all the vises on that big vise thread that cover almost all the vises until 2013.

the hitch idea is one i like too and i actually started a thread last year having members post theirs or ones they saw and here's the link.

ask questions if you need help and we will try to help if we can.
