New From Utah

Hi All,

We just sold our first home which had a two car garage where I use to park the minivan, store my tools and woodworking machines. I had big plans to set it up as my dedicated wood shop but just couldn't come up with any good ideas that would allow for good project flow, and allow my wife to park her car in there all winter. I then stumbled upon GJ and now have more ideas than I know what to do with! And, lucky me, we are now building a new home with a three car garage! I'm planning to do a garage gallery thread on the build which will probably take me the good part of 2015 but the goal is to be finished before Christmas.

Utah winters can be fairly cold (avg. temps last week were in the teens) so I'm insulating all the walls and ceiling, including buying insulated doors. I've requested a gas line to the garage as well for radiant tube heat. My budget probably won't get me too far but as long as I have everything organized and functioning as I'd like I will be a happy man.

Thanks for all the great ideas and I look forward to finally being able to contribute.

It's a daylight basement with 9' ceilings. The footprint is something like 1200 sq/ft and it's two stories plus the basement, 3,800 overall.. (We have a big family!) I'm just thrilled to finally have a space of my own. I do cabinet refinishing, build furniture, collect OWWM and tune up my cars. I'm also interested in building canoes, trailers, and other fun outdoors stuff.

KJ: it's hard to think of all the things you want to put in a shop, garage or your family's new home. so best advice is to put in more than you'll think you'll need when it comes to outlets, cabinets and such. or as much as you can afford.

sounds like a huge place. i raised 5 kids in a 2000 square foot home that only had one bath until i added a half bath shortly after we had the twins who are 24 now and the youngest.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I haven't met with the electrician yet, that should happen in a couple weeks and I intend to wire up lots of outlets, including three 220v for my (future) compressor, table saw upgrade, and planer upgrade. Now that I have the space I can finally upgrade the tools I want to fill it! I'm also adding RG6, speakers, and cat6 for my TV monitor and stereo system. Hopefully all that falls within budget.

Thanks again for all your support, I look forward to sharing progress on the garage gallery soon.

Just wanted to add a couple pictures. We got the floor poured finally now that we're experiencing temps close to the 40's. The last few weeks have been single digits so that put a halt on construction. As soon as we start framing and I get a chance to take some more pics I'll start a gallery thread. Peace.

KJ: your cement work looks great and good to see you had decent weather to make the pour. you might want to put your location in your profile so once you post questions in other parts of the forum our members can be area specific with their answers since we have members all over the world on here.

those are interesting window wells. i'm not sure I've seen that style before. it almost looked like you could have made an outside access to the basement or do you have one on one of the sides i can't see in the pictures?

good luck

The land is very flat so it would have been costly to dig and build an outside access. Although it would have been nice we decided not to make one. Those window wells are just corrugated sheet metal, probably the most typical product used around here for window wells.

Don Long, this is Utah County so just slightly south of SLC. Below is a picture of the very nice view of Mount Timpanogos from our future front porch.

This was the day we poured the walls, just before Christmas and three days before we got 12" of snow.

Wow...nice view but seems so strange not to see any trees.

Welcome to the Utah desert!

And thanks for the suggestions above about water, drains, and electric. I'll be sure to post the details when I do my garage gallery thread. I have lots of questions and would like to hear the opinions of the experts here on GJ soon.

KJ: thanks for taking the time to take those pictures of your window wells. impressive home. are they saying about 3 more months before you can move it or how long?

hang in there and i hope you are ahead of the contractor in choosing carpets, cabinets, tile and all the many choices you need to make. if you might have any questions you can ask here and maybe one of us with the answer will see it and be able to help.

good luck
