There was a piece displaced when they dumped the fill. We managed to get it mostly back in place. It didn't bother me much because it's back filled on both sides there. The tall, open walls were much more important, and those are ok. Under-slab insulation will be done by me as soon as the fill is done. Hopefully early this week. There will be a vapor barrier go down first, then 2" Foamular 250 insulation.

This is a screen shot from my phone of the layout of the radiant tubing. Couldn't figure out a better way to show it here. It will be a closed loop, single zone system of 4 loops of 1/2" barrier PEX. The loops are 235 ft approx. It won't be running this winter. Plan to run it on a electric micro boiler.

I can't take credit for it. I worked with a guy from Nibco. It's really simple. Just send them the dimensions, along with some info about insulation, number of windows, doors, etc, and a receipt for their brand of tubing, and they'll do your layout and a shopping list designed for your building. No charge.

Got the fill all in and compacted. Vapor barrier going down and then the foam. Rebar and wire mesh is next and then the radiant tubing. I'm doing the tubing, and it's a first for me, so I hope the tubing turns out at least close to what the schematic shows. Supposed to pour the floor Wednesday.

Here's the jig I made up for securing the radiant tubing during the pour. The plan is to use conduit clamps screwed to the jig.

It's 4 loops because it's recommended to not go over 300 ft before returning to the heat source. The water would be too cool at the end of the run if it's any longer. In my case, all the loops planned out at 235 ft, and it looks like we did pretty well. All the tubing is in. I had 2 helpers, and it only took us about 3 hours.

Here's the jig I made for holding the tubing during the pour. I've got 50 lbs of air on it right now and it's holding steady. Ready to pour!

I suppose I could. I chose not to. I'm sure I'll lose a little heat through the foundation, but it can't amount to much.

I would really consider 2-4" of foam around the perimeter of your slab. Real easy to do at this point. This is where the majority of your heat loss will be.

I just did the math, and that area around the perimeter of the slab equates to about 47 ft sq if you account for the doors. About half of which is underground. Taking into account the 1400 ft sq of insulation I put on the foundation walls and under the slab, I'd say I covered my largest heat loss. I don't think I'm ever going to look back and wish I'd done that 47 ft sq.

If you do the 1/2" expansion material on the foundation wall as and then pour the slab it will create a thermal break between floor and foundation. Should help with loosing heat out the walls.

Well, I've got a floor. Builder says he wants to start framing Fri. But I don't see that happening, because, well, it's Friday.

This is what happens when your bobcat operator doesn't watch what he's doing. He beat the **** out of the little wall between the man door and the roll-up door. Could have been much worse if I hadn't stopped him. It will be fixed. That's a promise.

And they cut out and repaired the bobcat damage.

And my radiant stuff looks good. Still holding 50 lbs of air from 2 days ago. I think I'm good.

Slab is 5", but I have no idea what the height of the rebar chairs is. Concrete guy tried to slide a 4" pour by me, but I called the builder and had him check the contract. That extra 1" cost somebody, (not me), a few dollars.

Got a delivery early this morning. Funny, though. It hasn't rained here for 2+ months, and the first day the carpenter is scheduled, it rains. We'll try again Monday.

No progress. Apparently we're getting leftover rain from the hurricane. Had roof trusses delivered yesterday, but no walls to put them on. They had a crane scheduled to set the trusses, but the rain messed that up. The yard is too soft now. They'll be carrying them by hand.

Went to pick out a roll-up door today. Went with a really nice, 1-3/8" thick steel insulated from Overhead Door Co, with an opener. Trying to decide if I need windows in it. I'm getting a window in the wall right next to the roll-up, and the walk in door on the other side of the roll-up has glass. It's not too expensive. Any opinions?

For me, the windows/no windows argument was resolved in favor of security. Once you put one window in a structure the security argument goes out through it.

I like natural light and if you are going to bring in a little more will be better.

My only argument against the windows is security. Not breaking in through there. They'll use the window or door for that. But just being able to see if they want to break in is the issue. I'll probably put a mirror tint on there.

Well, we'll try it again tomorrow. Last Monday, the builder showed up with 2 helpers to start framing, and when he saw the concrete guys pouring the flatwork they should have poured the week before, he packed up and left. Then the rain came. I was assured that they would be here Monday morning. Wish me luck.

Finally some progress today. Had 4 guys working at 7:30 am. This was about 11 am, but I'm told all 4 walls are up, and the trusses are up there, but not in place. Ordered the roll-up door today. Went with the fully insulated (R13), with the glass. 12'x8'. Takes about 2 weeks, but I learned something on the door. 12' wide is not considered a normal width, so it's special order. I may have gone 10' wide if I'd known that.
